I've never seen any at my local one.

Depending on where you live, you might wanna try らしんばん or Melon Books. Plenty of non-chain-shops selling them in Akihabara or Denden Town as well.

You can reinstall better windows on the laptop. Blame your own inability. I bet, the owner also was like this. Updated to win10 automatically and was unable to go back, so got rid of it. Pathetic.

Went to this one with one of the pictured orange shopping carts full of books and vidya, came away with a whopping $12.

It's a better deal than dropping this stuff at Goodwill, but yeah. Huge profit margin for them.

What is it about Japan that gives it such a unique "look"? It's got this dense crammed-in-a-sardine-can look to it that just doesn't match anywhere else. It's a claustrophobe's nightmare.

What are the book offs in America like? Are they mostly western? Or is there a good share of untranslated manga?

Well my experience with the NYC Book Off is mainly on the first floor, as one previous Anon had mentioned it's very Americanized. The main floor seems jam packed with American dvds and music. Also on the main floor are figures/toys of both the Japanese and Western varieties along with electronics such as stereos, computers, monitors. game consoles and even watches. They also have tons of used games of both the Japanese and Western varieties as well, some that are as old as during the SNES/Genesis era.

I haven't been on the second floor and only been to the basement once where they tuck all the anime/mangas down there and I think some of the more risque Japanese figures there as well (funny how they try to hide all this in the basement as if out of shame).

Perhaps someone who has been to the 2nd floor and basement can fill you in on those.

I think 2F is where the light novels were when I was there, but I haven't been since 2014. It was a pretty small selection, as far as I recall. I haven't felt the need to go back, since as you said it was mostly not books (let alone Japanese books).

Oh yeah. In the 90s, Levi's Red Tags were the SHIT in Nippon.

I did a grand tour of most of the SoCal BookOffs five years ago. It was mostly Japanese stuff, but maybe that has changed by now. All stores have a $1 manga section and a ~$5 manga section. Pretty good selection but you rarely find whole sets in the $1 section. They have random sales too which can be pretty crazy.

>>16113710
lol they moved the embarrassing shit to the basement? It used to be on the upper level, maybe 3-4 years ago, after they moved away from the location across the street from the main library.
