Canonically how old is Reimu now? Surely it's time for her to make an heir!

>> No.16060572

I know the "official" thing is that the characters age in real time but Marisa and Reimu should be around 30 if that were true and they certainly don't look it.

Marisa can probably slow it with magic and Reimu has the excuse of huffing Remilia's dust and getting a few years off that.

According to wiki, EoSD happens in 2003, and "Marisa and Reimu are indirectly referred to as "children" in Chapter 22's first half (2001)". Children are people below 12 yo, but the girls does not seem to be little kids in CoLA. We can assume that Reimu and Marisa have around 7~12 years in that printed work.

Let's accept that both are 9 years old in CoLA's chapter 22. Following that conjecture:
EoSD: 12 yo (2003)
MoF: 16 yo (2007)
DDC: 22 yo (2013)

LoLK happens in 2015, therefore the protagonist are only 24 years old. However, this is a conjecture, problably their ages ranges at 21~26 yo. One more thing: ZUN could compress or expand Gensokyo timeline anytime he wants to do the girls age slower.

They could easily age more slowly due to being "youkai-like humans" in a land of fantasy. Reimu is compared to a hermit, so she'll probably live for a long time.

The real question is if/when ZUN is going to kill off Akyuu, given how many times her short lifespan has come up. And whether he'll cheat by just having her move in with Yuyuko.

Sumireko won't be a highschool student forever, either. I could see maybe ZUN having her repeat a year since she keeps sleeping in class.

If you mean the literature overall, here is a decent chronology an anon made that you can use as a guide.

I personally think that pre-MoF, the order in which you read things is not as important as later works, as long as you know how those four games go. This makes ingesting CoLA, BAiJR, PMiSS, and the games' contents a pretty easy entry point, since as long as you know the absolute basics like characters and stuff it isn't very daunting even if it is a bunch to read. In terms of "importance", those works would probably go PMiSS > BAiJR > CoLA, because of the different kinds of information they give.

These works lay a solid foundation for what comes next, being from MoF to pre-TD along with Bougetsushou (SSiB+CiLR). Bougetsushou is pretty heavy, and both the manga and novella are needed to get the whole picture. SSiB alone just seems dumb and pointless while CiLR alone has no context and no clear sense of what's happening.

Anyways, even if you don't read Bougetsushou, you can start reading basically anything coming after UFO (like WaHH and FS) as long as you basically know the games and stuff up to that point and acknowledge it's after UFO. Just like with everything pre-MoF, they're mostly intelligible if you've been following the series even if you don't exactly read everything in absolute order; you can kind of connect the dots.

Generally I think it's pretty lenient to get into as long as you have the games and characters as a backbone and read some pre-MoF works first. A lot of what Touhou works are in general is exploring and expanding the setting by having concepts explained through simple storytelling and new elements always being introduced, rather than having an overall plot progression, so it isn't like you're picking up a book in the middle.

>Zun has said lots of things that fans ignore in favor of their fan views
That has nothing to do with what I was talking about, though?
>the comics are hardly accurate sources of anything with Aya wing debates and both versions of Lily showing up at the same time
Inconsistencies in manga drawings, and especially location or character design differences, are usually not even worth paying attention to and often don't mean anything at all. The whole deal with character designs is that they aren't locked as unchanging pillars in order to give artists some leeway in areas where it isn't actually important; people arguing non-ironically about whether Aya has wings or not is blitheringly dumb. Anyways, again, I never said anything about drawing details. "Show, don't tell" is a literary device.
>there was a time where fans assumed the outside world was a little ahead of the real world in time and science
No, only people who thought that e.g. the time of the Sealing Club was concurrent to the rest of the works. They were always mistaken.

All Hakurei miko are adopted orphans raised by their predecessor.
If they weren't, family ties might prevent them from killing humans turning into Youkai like Reimu just did in the manga.

When she finds a suitable orphan Yukari will leave it at the shrine for Reimu to find.

If you ask me, the Hakurei shrine should probably have more than just one heir around at any one time. Eventually(and considering the length of time Gensokyo has been around I'm surprised it hasn't happened already), probability dictates one of them will die from birth complications or any other measure of numerous dangers that pervade Gensokyo, youkai notwithstanding, and then everything would be fuckity fucked.

Seriously for a bunch of powerful magical little girls their planning ability really sucks.

This seems plausible, given that:
a.) Reimu appears to be the only living Hakurei and seems to somehow not have any relatives in the village.

and

b.) Aya, who is fairly well-informed and has observed several Hakurei shrine maidens, implied that Reimu could be replaced if necessary.

It really does look like "Hakurei" is more of a title than a bloodline that has to be preserved. Granted, it would still presumably be bad news if Reimu died without training a successor, especially if her successor turns out to not be as absurdly talented as Reimu.

If that happened, would people not abide by Spellcard rules anymore?

I mean, they were Reimu's idea in the first place, and she's the one enforcing, them I'd wager. If they're designed to give the weak a chance to fight back against the strong, then wouldn't the strong have little reason to adhere if there weren't anything that could force their hand?

IaMP introduces Suika, who's an important recurring character.
SWR and Soku give a little insight into some of the returning characters, but the new characters hardly ever show up.
HM ties into one or two Forbidden Scrollery plotlines.
ULiL ties into a ridiculous number of other plotlines across all media, to the point where the next non-decimal game is a direct sequel to it.

The other decimal games aren't that important.
