The problem I find with his more recent stuff is the lack of colors and development. Pure Furies is a repeatfest and doesn't waver from the VI-VII-i pattern in any meaningful way, whereas in tracks like those in MoF, he'll often go to that lowered or raised VII or even down to the IV. Some of the stage themes in LoLK take some interesting turns but nothing really progresses as drastically or with a narrative arc like The Gensokyo the Gods Loved, Mystic Oriental Dream, or Centennial Festival for Magical Girls. I also think that his melodies don't function as well as sentences. The parallel period structure he's always used is still there, but there's less inflection in each phrase like you hear in Because Princess Inada is Scolding Me or Beloved Tomboyish daughter. It feels like he's in a transitional stage to a new style that's not quite fully formed yet.

It's good as a reflection of her chaotic side. The issue people tend to have with it is the way that the 3/4 melody goes off the rails at the end of each line and I tend to agree. That 3/4 melody is great up until that point, especially once it reaches the peak and skips down, so it's enough for me to like it.

I'm not sure. Evening Star only has two distinct sections with the sporadic piano and the trumpet theme. That trumpet theme itself is much too heavy for a stage theme and not as lyrical and doesn't develop over long enough of an arc. Shanghai Teahouse has 3 distinct themes that transition into each other in different ways and with different timbres. The Gensokyo the Gods Loved likewise has 3 themes AND a brief solo section. Walking the Streets of a Former Hell has two, but also a solo section and a more developed introduction before any melody enters. Nostalgic Blood of the East has 3. Sky Ruin has 3. Doll Maker of Bucuresti has 4. The only one that has two and not much else is Let's Live in a Lovely Cemetery.

Evening Star only has the ghostly introduction, the piano, and the trumpet melody. It's only source of development is an unprepared transposition. These are typical boss theme things, so if you're talking about stage 3 bosses perhaps it's closer. But even among that selection the style of the line doesn't have a close match. It drives too strongly and deliberately to each new peak across the 3/4 in a manner of a stage 6 boss, although there have been no final boss themes in simple triple. The way the line disintegrates into random trumpet fuckery after the peak skipping down isn't quite final boss-like though. In any case, it's too structurally simple for a stage 3 theme and has too much bravado for a stage 3 boss.

Just my preference. I do think it fits really well after having cleared Ran. The two complement each other.
As individual songs, I think Necro Fantasy does build-up better but together I think Necro Fantasy is good for building up to Necrofantasia.

I think that Necro Fantasy is perfect for a normal extra boss, which Ran is.

However, Necrofantasia is much more intense and exciting, not to mention that the instruments and sounds stray far from the conventional Touhou song. All of this makes Necrofantasia suited for an encounter for one of the most powerful and important characters in the series, and that's exactly who Yukari is.

I would have to say that Necrofantasia takes the cake here. Sorry Ran.
