/jp/, I've always wanted to make my own FF-style RPG. FFVI was just such a huge part of my childhood. I can do sprites, music, and writing, but the programming portion has always been a hurdle. I know a little bit of Java, but I doubt I could do a real large-scale project.

Is RPG Maker XP actually worth while? I mean, I know previous versions have had a static, unchangeable battle system, but now it seems to have a scripting tool for that. Yume Nikki was made in RPG Maker, right? So it can't be that bad.

You played Yume Nikki? WHY DO YOU WANT TO GO BACK TO GRINDAN

Enjoy quitting halfway due to lack of motivation.

Fuck yeah, grindan for my h-scenes.

>> No.1595499

RPG Maker XP is not a bad tool at all, but you'd never get anything high-quality out of it without great originality.

(See: Yume Nikki.)

Yume Nikki is grindan. Or rather, walkan.

WIN! moar, etc.

>> No.1595612

Honestly, if you're just going to make a basic sprite based game, you'd barely have to learn any code to begin with.

Assuming you're going to make some decent quality sprites, it really wouldn't be a significant, relative increase in time to just learn some basic java, and create your own unique system.

RPG Maker is cool for playing around, but nobody will really play it, even if it's pretty good (which is unlikely). Games like Yume Nikki are rare, and their success is almost entirely based on the luck of having a few loud fuckers on the internet enjoy it.

One day I woke up fucking bored and scripted a battle system in Ren'py.

Well, I feel the real problem would be in making large maps and conversation trees in respectably clean Java.

I mean, an RPG needs lots of content.

If you ever do something like that, I'll compose the music for it. Seriously. In fact, I'll compose music for any project, if anyone else wants to do something like that.

Can you do ambient?

The programming part isn't that big a deal. Just dive right into it.

Your graphics, story, and music will still be of greater importance.

I have quite a bit of RPG Maker experience from making dozens of aborted projects if you ever need help with the programming part.

I'm far more used to OST-ish stuff, classical, post-rock and noise but I'll do ambient, sure. I won't do anything until I see a working project, though. And trust me I'll post in your thread if I see a project going, since I'm here a lot.

Thanks, that's encouraging. I guess even if the programming proves too much for me, with a good story and production behind it I can convince some programmer-type it's a substantial, worthy enough project to collaborate on.

>> No.1595820

I'm down for any type of music making. Heck, I'm doing some right now.

I'm not really that big on IRC or forums or anything. Perhaps many Anons also feel the same way.

Well I certainly wouldn't say that the programming should be overlooked; the biggest problem isn't that it's hard to learn, it's that it can be tedious as hell, especially if you want to make a puzzle that's more complicated than "find key, insert in door".
