I don't know if elf was still having their old staffs back in 2004 before 下級生2 development, but I think if the competent ones are still there, they would be more aware of the current market and not creating Tamaki in the current state as main heroine. If Tamaki hadn't happened, elf would still probably alive, but still a shell of their former self and bound to producing normal eroges. I don't know if a true remake of the original series would be popular in the current market where heroines are virgins and the gameplay in eroge are mostly little to non-existant except for a few titles.

It's pretty fun to check 2ch archive for the release aftermath reaction of the game. The amount of salt there is astounding.

I think at worst you'll lose some of the freshness, when you play Eustia after like 100 gakuenmono in a row then it's a really "holy shit this is really happening", Senmomo will kinda take away from that due to be being fantasy too. Other than that, should be fine. Report back I wanna see how otherwise Senmomo influences how one perceives Aiyoku

Maybe it's because I've read Fureraba and some of Loverable, in addition to quite a few moege, but Kanojo Step feels really generic, like I've played the game many many many times before. The comedy is standard smee fare which is great but the normal writing seems to be standard everything fare and it's a big part of the game. I guess I should have expected that, though. I won't critique it before finishing a route, though.

Okay, finished with the common route and all that introductory stuff for Kanojo Step.

So far, my impression is that it's not a bad game. The protagonist, while being fairly similar to every smee protag I've ever seen, is yet still a refreshing entity of honestly and humour. While nothing to write home amount, his character does set a good stage upon which the rest of the game is built. That stage being "Tame Fureraba", because this game is like Fureraba 1:1 when it comes to character interaction and pretty much everything except with less energy. There's a lot of reminiscent events, like the MC shouting to the class he intends to make a girlfriend, and the general tone is pretty close. However the general energy level is significantly lower, I think they were aiming to make this game feel more like a classic "romance" game and less like a balls-on-the-wall comedy like Fureraba often was because the 雰囲気 in Kanojo Step is a lot more chill despite still having the same style of maniac comedy.

The heroines are nice. Noe (black hair) is funny and has some endearing quirks like her love of bugs but didn't really grab me. Shiina (long brown hair) is the classic "seitokaichou who's an intelligent beauty but is also comically frank and down to earth", no complaints here. Asuka (short brown hair) is pretty unremarkable, her only real quirk is that she's sportsy, but she's too womanly to appeal to tomboy fans I think. Out of all heroines, I expect Kuon to be the fan favourite (if people can tear their eyes away from black hair yamato nadeshiko that is) because her character is pretty excellent. A 積極的 kouhai with great ノリ and a solid character design, wavy hair really fits her. She's definitely my favourite.

All things considered, though, I don't feel like continuing to play, which is why I'm writing my impressions now. The comedy is good, but it's the same stuff I've read before, and everything feels way too familiar. I like my fair share of moege, but from my perspective Kanojo Step ends up feeling just too generic thanks to the writer basically never changing as far as I can tell. Definitely feels like I've read this game several times before in Fureraba and Lover Able. It doesn't help that the game is afforded no assistance from the by-the-numbers 田舎 setting, unremarkable (and seemingly hated) art, lame sound track, and lack of any sort of theme or plot to help smooth things along. In other words, it's a game supported by its heroines and comedy, its writing, but neither are particularly fresh or engaging, particularly for those who have read smee games before. I'm shelving Kanojo Step probably forever.

So I just finished the common route of this, and unfortunately its not good at all. Not at "unplayable" level bad and actually it had some potantial to become a funny jealousy-themed game but writer fucked it up with some details he missed. For example Arisa's 「あ・・・え・・・そ、その・・・あの・・・」 lines take like a fucking minute to listen and becomes pretty annoying after a while. Yeah her shy personality is cute, but as a writer he should have pay attention to voices as well. Also the brocon heroine appears after you have played fucking 3-4 hours of the game, I guess they had an brilliant "hey if we dont show one heroine maybe they wont drop the game until she appears" idea.

Lastly mc is pretty much a hetare and cant even join the fucking conversations. I'm kinda used to non-personality ones but this guy takes it to another level.

Writer seems like a cool guy who is listening all the opinions about the game and Azuki & Sasha were good heroines so I'll give one more chance to him if he ever writes some more eroges, but this gets 5/10 from me at the best.

That's less his problem and more your problem for not just skipping the voices in lines like that.

But the line continues after them, "あ・・・え・・・そ、その・・・あの・・・" is not the all of it. Since her voice is cute I'd like to listen the sentence from her VA, but for that you have to bear with all those which is pretty annoying, or at least for me. Also she starts almost all of her lines like that.

Finished Utawarerumono: Futari no Hakuoro. Well, it was okay but in general the game felt like the original too much, been there done that and had roughly the same type of plot revelations and developments. Instead of the first long war taking the majority of the game I was kind of wishing the writer had been more ambitious and built upon the original's setting and scifi stuff more, but this or Itsuwari Kamen didn't really add anything groundbreakingly new in terms overall lore and such. Really playing it safe in my opinion, and the enjoyment probably depends on how much the player wants more of the exact same as the original for 50 hours. Thank god no other sequel hook cliffhangers though.

As for plot, there were some absolutely retarded turns; For example fucking everything to do with Tuskuru. At the beginning Kuon resolves to lead them, only for the old characters to let her go on her own again, without Tuskuru interfering. It feels like a really cheap way of making the civil war have some sort of challenge, even though they'd be able to shit on Raikou easily and they only conveniently rush to help in the very, very end when the whole world is at stake. Then Hakuoro and Eruruu willingly giving Voshisu the master key. WHY? Even though he gets defeated in the end, lending him the key led to thousands of needless deaths. No you fucking don't deserve a happy ending. Probably again a cheap way of creating challenge and urgency in the story. Let's not also forget that them waiting for any human makes Itsuwari no Kamen's war make no sense either, since the Emperor of Yamato was also human. Or in the beginning Entua helping Burai for no proper reason. There were lots of these type of convenient "quick, we need challenge and drama pronto" moments.

Voshisu himself was a boring irredeemable villain with inferiority complex and daddy issues stemming only from poor communication with the Emperor, and I already guessed he was the going to be the traitor in the previous game. He becomes even more bland after using the mask.

Gameplay wise it was an improvement to Itsuwari no Kamen. In general the game is now actually difficult on Hard, there's new usable characters and you can perform dual combos / finishers with multiple characters. As for the biggest issues, I played on PS3 and whenever Fumiriru used any attack or heal the game would always crash, meaning I couldn't use her in battles. The second last boss also had one such game crashing attack, forcing me to play that specific battle on Normal in order to prevent it from using that move.

Music was great and I'm waiting for the OST to be uploaded. There were tons of vocal tracks.

Tried Corona from Eternal. Yumina I dropped because the gameplay was honestly pretty crappy... and the story not much better. But I figured I could give the dev one more chance.

The good: The gameplay seems like it's not as much of a disaster.
The bad: The story is just as meh as in Yumina, with characters ranging from uninteresting to shit.
Neutral: Not sure what to think of you needing more than 2 hours to reach the damn tutorial stage. Yumina still had a.. game.. included. Not a good one, but still. In Corona the gameplay feels more like an afterthought. Based on its 攻略wiki it doesn't even have 20 stages, let alone anything optional. Seems weird.

Not going to continue it. The story is really nothing special with the author somehow achieving to include all the shittiest tropes and make pretty much all girls unlikeable in some way or another. I already don't give a single shit anymore after a few hours in, so.. yeah. Not worth it, in my opinion. But I'll probably try their most recent game at some point. Different writer compared to Yumina and Corona, and seeing how they at least SOMEWHAT improved the mechanics in Corona.. maybe it's fun? Maybe.

The upcoming release of the remake reminded me to finally play this game, and I just reached 100%. Frankly, I can't say I liked it.

From what I gathered, everyone rags on the epilogue, and for good reason, even now I'm baffled at how unbelievably terrible it was. But the main game wasn't much better. I'm sick and tired of writers baiting you with mystery after mystery only to give you a shitty resolution in the end.

The protagonist was unbearable. I suppose he was made to be like the "cool" main characters of elf's dating sims, he doesn't come anywhere close to their greatness however. Emphasis was put on him just being a student, and while that makes his retardation and absolute refusal to ever put one and one together understandable (except when the plot needs him to be wise), it sure isn't enjoyable to read. His exchanges with the other characters are mostly an ennerving exercise of suffering through the same old, reused and hardly funny jokes; I thought the low quality of his banter with the token tsundere was exemplary, I guess they wanted something like the relationship of the protag with Misa in Doukyuusei (which explains the completely unrelated reference to "running" that one time), but it just doesn't come close.

The game system is of course a clicky mess, though I think it's unjustified to believe because of it in the inherent superiority of the regular VN system, as I have seen some do. It's just this game's system with its pixel-hunting that happens to be terrible, I was never frustrated with, say, the navigation in the nanpa games.

The only impressive thing about the soundtrack is its sheer volume, at best its atmospheric and I can't think of one track I would want to listen to outside of the game. I presume it is this scale of it all that enchanted people back in the day, combine this with a few grandiose ideas about fundamental concepts of life et al, and throw a few famous names around and you have a 90's meisaku (cf., for example, Xenogears). I haven't played any of Kanno's following games, but I can't say I'm surprised that I'm by far not the only one there. Also, lectures of pseudo-science are simple torture in practically every case. If I had to think of one positive thing, then that there were some decent CGs here and there (the tachie were below average though). All in all, I prefer just about every other elf game I played to this one, even mediocre titles like De Ja didn't leave me angry at the very least.

>The game system is of course a clicky mess, though I think it's unjustified to believe because of it in the inherent superiority of the regular VN system, as I have seen some do.
I tend to think that for telling stories like Yuno tried to, the regular VN system is fairly superior, for rarely does a game system add to a story. However, what really shattered that conception for me was Lost Colors, a VN which blended interactivity and story pretty much perfectly in a way that actually improved the story. To explain it simply, as you read the game you acquire hints (written in red) and you can choose to have one "hint" in the back of the protagonist's mind at any time. So, for example, a character will say "got any ideas?" and what you have in the back of the protag's mind will determine his response. This is fundamental for progressing through the game and due to the number of hints and the fact the trigger for them isn't always so blatant, you really have to think about what your character knows and what the other characters are saying. In order to progress the story, you have to always be on your toes, reading and thinking carefully. Much like a safe, if you know the combination you can open it at any time - if you think carefully, you can keep the story progressing at a constant pace. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in a non-linear, interactive VN that nonetheless maintains a good story and pacing.

MC is a ruthless murderer "knight" under the employ of the kingdom consumed by grey, slaughtering those who have been infected once again with color, people known suitably as "colors" to prevent the infection from spreading and destroying their grey kingdom. He preforms his job without any qualms, even when it comes to eradicating women and children. However, when he returns to the kingdom and stands before the king to receive his reward, the princess... he finds himself slowing being enveloped by the color disease. He, now, is "colored" and finds himself at the other end of the purging sword and must fight his former comrades in order to escape the fate he bestowed upon so many, perhaps finding the answers to what exactly the color disease is and why his kingdom is grey in the process.

This is all the prologue. The bulk of the game is what follows. Your "quest" is basically to get three different items located in three different primary locations, but you can't just pick one location and go through it, they're all interlocked. Information you find in one area (hints) is necessary to progress in another. It gave me a very thorough "adventure" feel and is logically consistent enough that I feel a walk through would only damage the experience. The writing itself is solid too, the characters are both interesting and fun (as you can imagine, the protagonist is a real piece of work) and the world engaging to explore. Definitely recommended.

Don't know if it's at all up your alley but the color disease bit made me think of a great surreal russian-made game called The Void. You're in basically the lowest floor of purgatory after dying, everything is grey and black and dead, you have to forage for scraps of Color that you use as your health, mana, energy, and how you interact with everything (by drawing glyphs on screen). Mostly you end up talking to mostly naked cute girls and horrifying machine-human abominations.

Not a vn but thought I'd try and repay the recommendation at least.

Oh yes, there's quite a bit like that. I also realized this. I especially liked how when you get the second ero-scene with the blonde knight and she acts as if she's the first time in the protagonist's room. You unlock that scene essentially right after the first one, and that one was also in the room..

Normally I don't think "multiple writers" are so obvious, but in this game the optional scenes REALLY give the vibes. Even if it's not contradictions. In one the girls just call the protagonist "purse" or something and act as if he's just there to buy them stuff. Never happened before. Feels more out of character than anything. Oh well.

That said, I mostly skip the optional scenes, in part because of that. They can be decent if you really like a character, but I feel they are otherwise just.. weird.

Don't read any part of this post if haven't read or finished reading Utawarerumono: Futari no Hakuoro.

Just finished it.

Yeah, some of the elements don't hold up. Almost all the bad things that happen towards the end could have been prevented just by Eruruu not giving the key to fag boy clone. What does Kuon even learn from this? That she won't go insane if Haku is dead, for a third time? Then why has she gone off again just just to chase him again so she can be with him again? She spent most of the game clinging to him scared shitless he will die and sure enough it happens. I guess most of Kuon's development was about her not becoming god rather than to be able to handle no Haku. I don't get Haku's Jesus motivations either, maybe he becomes god emperor or maybe Kuon has lost her mind again.

I didn't mind Raikou as a villain and I was hoping he would learn about the humanity of the past and try to usher in a new age of science. The fag was too much of a piece of shit for me to root against and it was totally obvious he was a traitor from the start. The game was too long, especially the long epilogue where we have no to wonder if Haku is truly dead as if we didn't see what happened coming.

The game writers had to balance sucking off the old cast and making the new cast look good. What they failed to realize is I spent 30 hours with the first cast in 2008 and 100 hours with the new cast between 2015 and 2016, meaning I kinda don't care that much about the first cast outside of a few fanservice scenes. They actually didn't do too bad, I was expecting them to make the first cast look like gods for most of the game and the new cast to look like useless knuckle dragging subhumans. Hakuoro and Eruruu did get an end that was not really warranted and chances are most of the audience (I'm projecting) would have been happier with Haku and Kuon getting that end..

I am easily manipulated so the game did get some emotion out of me, only when Haku kisses Kuon and when Oshutoru's mom gives Haku a shoulder to cry on, even though the latter was predictable and didn't have enough scenes to back it.

When Eruruu willingly gave the master key away I was originally assuming the writer was setting up continuity to Raikou's ideas about how people should not rely on old technology that they take for granted, using it as a some sort of teaching to Kuon and Haku (and maybe as a teaching and possible redeeming point for the fagboy himself), but it just led to deaths of innocents for no proper reason. The planet freezing could've been an interesting plot point as well, but they just reboot Amaterasu satellite anyways, which means people still rely on old tech to survive even if they don't know about it themselves. They could've had something there, but instead the plot went full retard.

Though yeah, I agree that the game had some pretty good moments as well.

>> No.15947037

>>15946774
The satellite thing was weak. It would have sent a good message if everything from the past stayed there, the satellite and Haku. I guess people would dislike that we spent 30+ hours taking back a more or less doomed world. Having the capital city destroyed was a nice touch though. Fag master and his shota harem (I hated beating them like 4 times) should have died with it. Fag master learns little to nothing, I guess he was just a means to get Haku to die again so we can see Kuon flip out yet again to get a "bitter"sweet ending.

Why would it make sense for Haku to become god? The end in the first game made sense. Unless there is a secret ending I don't get this one, Haku should be dead and in the ground.

This is the first part of Evenicle that's made me actually angry. This boss has a fuckton of HP, my moves barely damage him, right? So I thought I was doomed, until I realized poison does 10% of HP no matter what. Lo and behold, Gurigura's poison started fucking the boss up and a shifted gears to defending Gurigura so she could keep inflicting it.

And yet, apparently, despite this strategy being 100% effective and doubtlessly leading to my victory (see pic, he was goin down), the story has the team throw in the towel and forces me to flee. I don't know what's going to happen next but I bet I have to do some arbitrary thing to lower its defense or skip the battle entirely, even though I could have won on my own with a simple strategy. Really upsetting. It's not like this is the first time something like this has happened; the boss from CH4 required you to leave the lackies alive or you died instantly, so this is similarly tough unless you figure it out. Maybe have QD in the death screen say "try poison".

Exercitus was pretty fine, but the last part felt rushed.
They had a lot of (optional) heroine events left and just started dumping them all at once in the last chapters. There were literally 5 girls which got all their events in the last chapter, while the rest had them divided over multiple chapters before. Likewise there was a decent amount of "main-events" too, but somewhere the gameplay went missing. This was then rounded up by one of the most miserable final dungeons I've seen and a weak unimpressive final boss battle. (no second form, nothing remotely special) Weird as hell.

Afterwards you can play an extra "scenario" as "post-game", but that's just two old maps recycle without anything special either. Followed by 6(!) threesome+ h-scenes. Btw., the last chapter's event dumping also had over 10 h-scenes dumped among it. Who, the fuck, needs that all at once dumped on them? Is the game assuming the player won't like more than 2 girls at most anyway? But then why the three(+)somes? (Which btw. pair all the good girls with shit ones)

But, well. I'm sure this wasn't how they planned it at first. While the story doesn't seem incomplete, the gameplay.. sure does. Not like it really matters that much, near the end you can cheese everything anyway. (the balancing.. could be better)

Finishing all of those h-scenes before the last chapter was pretty cancerious for me. I mean who the hell thought that giving 6-7 h-scenes in a row would be a good idea? Yeah most of the h-scenes were pretty hot and great in the game, but it sure gets boring when you play 5-6 of those in a row.

Also Luana definitely needed more events, as a rival of the main heroine she and her relationship with mc is just too underwhelming. I'd enjoy some Marianne and Rico scenes too, but well it cant be helped I guess.

アリスティア・リメイン seems like a better version of it, but unfortunately it doesn't have as many characters as exercitus, which was the best point of the game.

Well, I mostly skip them anyway. In this case though I even skipped a lot of not ero-events popping up in the final chapter. Did the twintail (Elpis) and pretty much just skipped the rest, in case there's some dungeons or whatever. It was just too much at once. Reminded me of later chapters in Kami no Rhapsody. I also simply skipped most of the scenes of most really late joining characters. You are just sitting there for hours doing loosely connected side-events. Fun is something else.

Luana was indeed weird though. I kinda wondered why she was even on the final CG. When was she promoted to main-heroine? Then again, the whole way the game handles its girls is kinda.. weird. I mean it has a main-heroine. Sorta. Maybe? I feel like many sub-heroine had more "satisfying" endings to their "arcs" then Chloe had. Meh. 5 writers.

>> No.15952407

>>15952303
I actually liked most of the character events, but not having any connection fucked it up for sure. I mean okay you didnt want to connect them to the main story, its kinda understandable since there are 5 writers but connect the fucking side events at least. There isn't any fucking connection even between x character 1 and x character's 2. events.

Also imo they didnt want to end the game at this way, but because of the budget or something they had to force themselves. For example you can easily see that they wanted to make marianne as a tsunderish royal servant to the mc, who supports him etc but since she joined like 1-2 chapter before the ending they couldn't make any progress with her. Its same as the luanna, mc was finally being able to make some progress with her, then boom game just ended there.

Lastly, the ending cg should have something like all together etc, I'm not sure what the fuck is luana doing there either.

Mareni is indeed known for his difficult style composed on lengthy sentences and an expansive vocabulary which makes heavy use of older, pre-war Japanese constructs. If you read EGS, you'll see his prose mentioned as a negative and a positive pretty consistently. It should be noted, though, that despite being comparatively difficult, he's not an author that would completely floor a literate Japanese individual, and indeed if I recall the thieves part only took me like 10-20 minutes to get through, so if you struggled so much it's likely that you just don't really know Japanese well in the first place. Coming back in 2~ year will yield very different results.

Yeah, I've been learning for quite a while but only started actually reading like 5 months ago.

Would you say Steins;Gate and Chaos;Child are actually on the easier side of the spectrum? Those are the only ones I've finished so far. Took me almost 90 hours for S;G and around 100 for C;C, but I didn't have much of a problem after the first few days. Going through S;G 0 now, the only little problem I have is that I can't keep up with character voices when they're saying lots of technical stuff. Otherwise, I'm still not reading fast, but I don't find it difficult.

Any recommendations that are relatively easier but also a bit challenging in order to get good? Even after 2 years of moege, I would still find D&D difficult, after all.

>> No.15954014

>>15953941
Mareni is in a league of his own almost when it comes to VNs, I at least don't know of any author who tries to emulate classical authors in the ways he does. Reading moege for 2 years actually would be a big help, because a large source of frustration when it comes to Mareni is his convoluted grammar structure which actually becomes fairly natural after extensive exposure to Japanese. As for his vocabulary, you're right to guess that 2 years of moege won't be all it takes to bridge the gap. You'll need to either read through authors published before World War 2 as practice, or you'll need to just read Mareni himself as practice. I've never seen a VN author use his level of vocabulary so sticking to VNs in the first place will only get you so far. That said, his vocabulary isn't alien or anything, so as long as you read stories with competent writers who use a large vocabulary too (e.g. Hino Wataru) you'll be able to treat Mareni's classical vocabulary as almost "sci fi" terminology and guess what he's referring to somewhat easily.

Pretty much this.

I don't really find Mareni that "hard" nowadays except in the sense that he doesn't hold back on using less common and sometimes old-fashioned vocabulary (which usually has furigana anyway). He does, however, demand that you've really, properly internalized Japanese grammar and sentence structure, because he sure does utilize the language to its fullest extent. Personally, I find his rich prose a treat to read compared to the relatively sterile styles of most contemporary Japanese authors. But yeah, if you're still a beginner he'll be nigh-incomprehensible.

Basically: read more, git gud, come back in a couple of years.

I disagree with this. Assuming you enjoy sex scenes and aren't one of those people who suffer/skip through them and read purely for the story, it's great. The reason we read sex scenes as opposed to just using CGs is because of the writing, and Harukuru has some of the best written sex scenes, simply because of how good the author is. So the opening is plenty enjoyable. As for the lack of CGs, again, I disagree, because of the fantastic use of sprites. The amount of effort and variation put into the spritework really keeps the VN going without them perfectly fine.

Shinigami is very different and instead reminiscent of eroge by having the atmosphere of a slow starting scenarioge. You're right about Taisho Alice being similar with interactions. I was thinking more the comedy but that pinpoints it a lot better.
StS is probably less eroge reader friendly but I'd still recommend it more just for the overall better story. It also has nothing as intensely disappointing as Taisho Alice's epilogue.

Mostly I'm just trying to play devil's advocate, unilaterally praising a game usually warns people away from it. I loved the game, my complaints are more 'if only's.

I rather liked how the porn was where they dropped most of the things are kinda fucked up hints, a lot of it was used more for character development more so than fap material. Summer's requested-rape scene in particular was great with All-Seasons-kun's growing horror at his own indifference to her pain being really well done.

As for the CGs, mostly I would've just liked some shots of what happened to the Earth. Though the description was good enough that imagination was enough.

I agree, people are too used to normal VNs where the sex scenes are just thrown-in filler, but Harukuru really was different. It's hard to pinpoint any particular moment or line where things seem off, rather it's a general feeling of 'what the fuck, that's not normal' or 'why would she/he say that' and so on. A point to the writing that it can allude to things being weird without explicitly stating them.

It's good foreshadowing if you can manage to stay interested.

Absolutely, Shizuna's wanting to be forcibly raped leads in to one of the major themes of the story, that you need to be able to trust that other people can recover by themselves, because you are going to have to hurt the people you care about eventually and you need to be okay with that.

Stop me if I interpreted that wrong though, it was honestly a message that resonated pretty strongly with me and I may have twisted the original in trying to make it meaningful to myself.

/vg/ is for discussion of any type of eroge whether they're in English or French or Korean, whether they were made in Russia, America, or Ecuador, whether they're visual novels or not. It's irrelevant.

Just because some discussion of Japanese visual novels occurs on /vg/ doesn't make it the place to discuss all Japanese visual novels of a particular genre.

If you try and force discussion of otome games off /jp/ for some weird reason you have to force all discussion of visual novels off the board for the same reason. It would be throwing the baby out with the bathwater. The logic is not sound.

I mean come on: Do you fucking know how long it takes for vegetation to appear? Or what, is the ending supposed to be symbolic for "they are all nuts now and hallucinate"? Or did they just wait a couple of hundred years more, because WHY NOT, and I just didn't catch that one...

Well, anyway, it had its fun parts. Fuyune best girl.
Though to be honest.. before I'd recommend this one I'd probably recommend Island first. The route I read of it did my favorite element of harukuru much much better. Though they are still rather different in a lot of aspects of course.

Ice Age isn't unbelievable. Nor are mutations and the like when humans would need to live in extremely limited space outside of their natural habitat. Lack of the sun and such is quite a big deal, as an example.
Then we have sci-fi elements. The game has weaknesses here which actually lead to plotholes and nonsense parts, which I have written about here in the past and I won't repeat, especially because details become blurry over time anyway. But it does have a few fun ideas, and while not all makes sense, one can deal with it.
But. The ending in itself is a major part of storytelling, as it wraps up key-elements, gives a message and so on. Plus it's the final thing you see of the game. An ending will obviously stick with you when you think of the story. And in this case it was just WAY to ideologic. Given the whole theme with "last humans" and whatnot, such an idyllic scene is just bad if you ask me. If you wanna do plot, do plot. This ending just feels so very different from the final parts of the game. So very unfitting. So inharmonic. Like an ending to a different game. Just so we get our little happy sappy ending. I don't like that. And I know this isn't the only Japanese story that does that. Nor is it the worst case of this particular pattern. It's still pretty bad though. And, the worst thing is: It was super unnecessary too. They could've just made the also kinda cliché but still more valid "a little budding plant in the middle of a giant wasteland" ending to symbolize a new beginning.

But yeah. In a way it's a bit my personal taste here. Ever since I played Atelier Totori and saw its true ending which literally fucks over all character development and makes everything you did in the game invalid, just for a fucking happy ending, I'm a little.. sensible when it comes to this kind of stuff. And mind you, other people don't even give a fuck, because what's bad about a happy ending, right? So yeah, have some Fuyune.

Not that guy but ideologic isn't the right word. It was symbolic. 'Spring' is a major leitmotif throughout the entire story, it's in the title, it's in the themes, it's in the fucking engrish subtitle in the bottom corner of every screen; 'spring' itself has gone beyond the concept of just being a natural season and into a symbolic representation of rebirth, an end to the stagnation of winter, and all that good stuff the poets have been talking about for millennia. So when they get out, and there's blooming cherry blossoms all over the place, it's the most goddamn fitting thing they could possibly have put in a Japanese game to represent that yes, spring has finally come.

'Realistic' or not it was thematically the best thing they could have done. A little budding plant in a wasteland might be cute but what that really means for the characters is, more waiting. More cycles. And the entirety of the game has been them waiting out an inhuman amount of time. To end it like that isn't 'fitting', it just shits all over everything the characters went through, and it's incredibly unsatisfying to readers. You're ending it before the story is over.

Besides, they did actually wait a couple hundred years more, the AI points out even if they get there and the ice melts they still have to wait for the planet to become liveable again (i.e. vegetation to sprout up).

Official studies have shown knowing Chinese cuts about a thousand hours off learning Japanese (to JLPT1 level) due to knowing all the characters. So, at the very least, it's easier for a Chinese individual to learn Japanese than just about anyone else (excluding maybe Koreans, especially older ones or educated ones who studied characters in high school more fervently)

maybe you can easily self-insert as either of these guys but not everyone can. when MC is faceless it's easier for the majority to do so, this is in part why MC isn't voiced either but you also save alot by having a faceless voiceless character responsible for most of the game text

this is really all common sense

Any VN where there are characters speaking in fukui dialect?

>> No.15966182

>>15965804
Doubtful. There are very few VNs with characters that speak anything like an actual dialect. At best you might get a weird caricature of a mishmash of various Kansai dialects, heavily toned down to make it easier for Tokyoites to understand.

Apparently the dialects in Monobeno and Maitetsu are fairly accurate. And supposedly https://vndb.org/v1180 has pretty authentic Kansai-ben. That's probably about the best you'll get.

I guess it kinda also applies to voices as well while I enjoyed voiced protagonists some people don't, this from a comment about otome domain. Still could be because the MC is a girly boy.

Eh? I read Kurai Heya and aside from being "novel-esque" I didn't ever think of him as being comparable to Mareni's style. Why is it that you draw that comparison? Just that it's novel-esque?

>> No.15967101

>>15967082
>Just that it's novel-esque?
Yeah, that's the only reason. It's hard enough to find eroge writers who use a "novel-like" style at all, and no one even outside of eroge writes like Mareni unless you go back to pre-war literature.

Oh, and I forgot to mention Shinju no Yakata, which is (partly) written by Mareni but isn't a Liar/raiL title.

Ok, so after doing Aqua's scene in both the original and the remake, here is my thoughts.

The original is infinitely better. There are good VNs without sex scenes and there are well-developed romance stories without porn. But Himawari was not made to be one of them. So with the original, you have the classic, beautiful development of their relationship, slowly growing closer, both physically and emotionally, learning to trust and to love each other, and culminating in a sex scene as they give themselves entirely to each other. Fantastically done.

Now, the remake doesn't really rewrite the scenes so much as butcher them. Instead of cutting the scene entirely and writing in something thematically fitting and equally powerful, they literally copy and paste it over, chainsaw out the explicitly lewd parts, violently bash the other lines into the round hole that is an all-ages VN scene, and call it a finished work. It's not just あああああ's which were cut, mind you, there is some beautifully written, heartfelt dialogue in the middle of that scene that was dropped, while much of the rest was copied and pasted into the new scenes. This means, of course, that it doesn't quite feel right, doesn't quite make sense, doesn't flow naturally like this passionate intercourse, verbally, emotionally and sexually, is supposed to. It's almost comical, reading the same lines twice, literally the exact same wording and sentences, but with singular nouns swapped out to turn a lewd conversation, which makes perfect sense when naked in bed after passionate sex, into something that doesn't.

Anyway, I'm very glad I chose to read the proper version alongside it.
