I was reading the new Wild and Horned Hermit chapters, no big deal, when suddenly this shit showed up. (pic related) Can Kasen really be an oni? Or maybe ZUN is just teasing us and she is not one?

They don't necessarily have to be related, but similar enough that someone might mistake one for the other. Amanojaku have horns too (or at least Seija does), but I wonder if they have anything else in common.

If she's not an oni, it'd be a hell of a 180 or really an asspull at this point with everything that's been dropped.

However unlikely it is, there are ways around it...maybe she just has the same name coincidentally or has somehow taken over her identity at some point, and being a hermit/something else allows her to do all these oni things.

Given Yukari and Suika know her and Mamizou who's pretty in the know has caught on, though...yeah, I wouldn't think so.

That said in Gensokyo it's "easy" to change your youkai nature or have it changed for you as long as the perception is there. Maybe she was an oni, but is really is "just" a hermit now and that's all that matters.

If she's an oni, wouldn't be surprised if everyone including Reimu and Marisa just said during the reveal "We know, who cares". By now in the manga, it's really about how she came to be, what led her down this path. The revelation of being an oni would be secondary.

It is a bit different considering Suika is the Shuten-doji and a part of the group instead of a leader, but considering Yuugi Hoshiguma is pretty much a 1 to 1, it would stand to reason Kasen is too
