Can I ask for help here? Sorry if long post

I'm an IIDX noob currently playing 5's and 6's and there's one thing that's completely stopping me from progressing any further. For some reason, I can't read patterns that alternate single notes with chords, in any capacity whatsoever. I can do fast/complicated streams of single notes or multiple chords in a row, but as soon as there's a section that alternates them, I miss basically every note.

This video illustrates my problem really well (sorry for shit quality): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evw2oEx61tk&feature=youtu.be

That's me actually trying, believe it or not. I should be able to pass an easy 5 like this, but as soon as I get to that end section it's like my brain starts trying to read the right and left sides of the chart as separate patterns, which just really fucks me up. Not sure if this is a consequence of playing piano or what, but it's extremely frustrating.

For reference, I can pass the 6 of FLOWER, which is objectively much harder with much more complex rhythms, because it doesn't do this thing I have a problem with.

Does anyone have any advice at all as to how I can stop being retarded? I just wanna git gud.

>> No.15828891

>>15828836
You mean where 1 is on a constant 1/4 with the kick? I find it's far easier to just let my left hand do its thing kicking away, since it's a generally constant rhythm. Focus on the pattern on the left side, as if the first lane didn't exist.

This approach has generally worked for me.

>> No.15828926

>>15828891
Trying to separate them like that usually just makes it worse though? It's hard to put into words but I feel like I need to learn to read the patterns vertically instead of horizontally... if that makes any sense at all

>> No.15829041

>>15828926
That's sort of what he was getting at.

Your visual focus needs to be on the non-bass portion, since you should know in your head that the 1 key is the bass kick and that the bass kick is coming in quarters. Therefore you can turn your visual focus away from it and worry about the notes which aren't part of that.

The way I feel like I understand playing music like this is that a given portion of a chart isn't difficult on the basis of its note count. As you play, you become accustomed to common patterns which generally exist in music - bass on 1, bass on quarters with snare on halves, and so on - and the more you have those concepts ingrained in your head, the less you need to pay attention to them. Alternatively, view certain note clusters as groups. For a measure with 4 16th note ascending strings, don't think of that as 16 notes, think of it as 4 strings.

http://textage.cc/score/3/r5.html?1AB00

Play charts like R5 and pay attention to what you do on the melody portions like measures 13 through 20. Listen for and understand the consistent frequency of the key 1 bass kick to the point that you're not looking at it while you're doing other stuff.

I'm not getting the application of his setup.

He obviously plays arcade data but I only see a single PC.

Pop'n alone is finicky as fuck and doesn't like multiple monitors. This means that he'd have to unplug the monitor in the DB9 every time he played, which he could do just find by rolling his Pop'n ASC in front of his IIDX setup using that monitor.

But then you have the Voltex, which requires a vertical monitor and I highly doubt he's going to be using either the IIDX monitor (as it can't even pivot) or the DB9's monitor which he'd have to take out completely.

There's gotta be a whole separate PC with a monitor he uses and can pivot based on whether he''s playing Pop'n or SDVX

Yes, absolutely. I still stand by those convictions 100%. Even among thieves there exists a code. Why do you think these rules exist? Why do you think Sows functions as well as it does?

Because without them shit would fall apart in an instant. A band of pirates committing mutiny every day would never accomplish a single thing. If everyone was only in it for themselves, there'd be hundreds of people leaking data for financial gain. To those not as in the know of course.

It is not absurd to this code extends to bounties as well. Especially in the instance of monetary stakes being placed upon them. You see a fellow pirate is gearing up for an expedition to plunder the treasure of Serpent Skull Cove, you damn well better wait until he either returns unsuccessfully or news surfaces of his demise before you try yourself.

If this were real, early 18th century piracy, no one would bat an eye at me shooting that fuck dead for claiming my bounty for himself without saying a word.

If you want leds to work you're going to need use diodes to prevent power from going back to the encoder and a power source for the leds.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Zero-delay-arcade-controller-USB-PS2-PS3-PC-XBOX360-Fighting-stick-for-Happ-/172022911613?hash=item280d5d527d:g:YeMAAOxy-WxTBXJ~

This one doesn't seem to have a power source.

So you're going to need an external power source

the leds here
http://www.ebay.com/itm/291644572981?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Are rated to 5V/12V according to the description, the descriptions doesn't mentions anything about power usage really so it's hard to tell how much you will need until you can test them out, I think a DC Adapter 12V 500mA will do the job and you won't even need to use resistors, probably.

It would be something like this (pic stolen from Google) not entirely accurate though because this is not using microswitches, you will only need one diode per buttong

So after I said how Museca HDD never, I actually got to pondering building one.

Having 5 of those 600ppr encoders resting inside a spring mechanism that sits right above Omron microswitches.

Does this look like it could work? Only problem is trying to find something that would work for those springs. Has to be open on one end and closed on the other, with enough lip at the top to mount it to the underside of the top of the controller.

Also, not sure if any of those arduino boards could actually accommodate 5 analog encoders.

And yeah I know there's a pedal. That can be dealt with with my earlier EZ2AC pedal idea.

5 switches, 5 encoders and a 1/4 inch TRS connector for a drum pedal.

Most arduino boards can't do 5 rotary encoders. Of the ones with chinese copies, only Due can, and from the newer at least zero can. The reason for this is the number of interrupt pins, which with the older boards is less than the needed 2 per encoder. Other than that, the Due could easily handle the five switches and the pedal.

Rhythmically, absolutely not. DDR is extremely simple rhythmically. 99% of what you run into note wise are 4ths, 8ths, and 16s. You occasionally find 12ths and rarely 24ths. And also very rarely 32nds. That's it.

Not to mention the fact you get color coded noteskins and that even Marvelous timing windows are enormous compared to PGreats.

A few alternatives.
1.-Use a PS2 controller
2.-Rip off a circuit board from a PS2 soft pad.
3.-Try to find another box you can buy

You're going to have to solder, if you can't solder you can take it to someone who can like a repair shop, just tell him what you want to do and they will figure it out, show him some youtube videos web pages etc cetera, generally speaking you want two wires each button which once in contact the circuit closes thus reacting if button was pressed and a ground wire that comes out of the controller to prevent static to kill it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxPSIOsxaFs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qSdweZIavqg

You don't really need to drill it.

Once you've got your replacement circuit ready you're going to have to open the blue shark pad and replace the wiring, IF I remember correctly the blue sharks pad uses arcade sensors, 4 sensors in each panel connected in parallel, all you're going to have to do is follow the wires and cut them and tie them to your recently made circuit board and thats all, no soldering needed just use heat shrink tubing to keep them tight and in place.

Wait why would I need to open the pad of it was a blue shark?
I always thought the control box was a whole separate deal from the pads
From the looks of it I might just have to scrounge around for a replacement lol, the most I've ever done soldering wise is put in a ps1 modchip

The wire itself doesn't matters all you want is the port for interfacing, you could take some CAT5 wires and solder them to a VGA port and it will work.

So yeah any VGA cable will work.

If you ever switch exclusively to PC/HDD Data, All you'd need is just any old Dsub dancepad control box.

The pinning wouldn't even matter so long as you configured the inputs correctly.

Only issue MIGHT be the ground wire, but I'm fairly certain its placement is standardized even with slave labor chinks.

>> No.15851822

>>15851772
You wouldn't be able to use it on PS2 though, that why I recommend using a PS2 controller instead.

If you don't want to open the pad yo can make an external box using the same method.

Pin layout is
Pin 5 - Ground - Black
Pin 7 - Up - Gray
Pin 8 - Down - Green
Pin 9 - Left - Orange
Pin 10 - Right - Blue
Pin 14 - OA - White
Pin 15 - XB - Purple

I don't know why the fuck would anyone want an external encoder, those things break for a god damn reason.
