This has been like that as well. The only thing that is relatively new would be Haro dickriding, but that's more of a result of how MG is viewed as a whole. It's not like other translators haven't had their time in the spotlight in VNTS as well.

Most of the dumber shit that happens has been happening for years. It sucks to see a thread die early because of morons arguing but don't pretend it didn't happen years ago as well. It happened at a much smaller rate. This year has seen a massive influx of people. We've gone for 50-70 people posting in the average vnts last year to most threads having 100+ unique posters.

Having an anime is the best commercial you can have in the Western market, so it is unlikely to follow good but poorly known titles without attractive art, like Root Double. It's a fandisc, it's censored, Grisaia wasn't very popular as an anime, and it stopped airing quite a while ago. The ideal situation for Dies Irae is for it to release at least halfway through the anime's run (so it can get the most attention) and for the anime to at least be popular. It doesn't even need to be good, it just needs to capture an audience that wants more. If it can manage that, it'll probably do well enough.

If they don't, who knows. Lots of "hardcore" VN readers are jaded and turned off towards Kickstarters now. Then there's a small portion of people who will refuse to pay for all-ages stuff, even if it's the definitive version of the game.
I can't think of a single VN that got Kickstarted on name alone. Basically every title that has been a huge success has had a fan translation, anime, or both. Perhaps if DI had some fan TL already and constant circlejerk threads like Muv-Luv it'd be in a better state.

They didn't redraw the CGs so the base resolution is meaningless. You will barely notice the difference between something being upscaled with an algorithm and your TV doing the upscaling itself. In this case, the only benefit from the cropping is that it'll take up the entire of the screen, but as the images are not being drawn in higher resolution you're not actually gaining anything from this, other than your autism at black bars being curbed.

Regardless, there are cases where the parts of the image being removed are important. Like the comparison shot in VNTS (>>15723826) where most of the chuu2 writing on the sword is cut off. Not to mention that the focal point of this particular CG makes it look more than a bit odd to be cropped.

They really should just have both the 4:3 and 16:9 resolutions available when they do this. It does seem like DI will have 800x600 available, though.

I hope that the Dies Irae team isn't looking to Muv Luv as a baseline for Kickstarter, if they do it before the anime. On the surface it makes sense to compare them, both are huge titles in Japan. But Muv Luv was the accumulation of several years of largely uniform praise in places where a broad community would see it, from the well played fan translation. Dies Irae on the other hand, is largely unknown and a hard sell that you have to explain to a crowd that isn't going to be listening (which includes the press). Muv Luv also had a fantastic marketing team behind it, something that it looks like Dies Irae is going to be lacking.

The math changes while the anime is airing, as the early episodes are likely to be meant with much praise, and suddenly the topic of a Dies Irae kickstarter is very newsworthy and you have an audience now willing to listen.

In fact none of the screen shots on there are even 720, they're 506, which makes them completely useless for comparison shots.

I don't see any mention of it using "high resolution art assets" either. I mean, you can just see the screenshots anon posted. They look upscaled to me, but maybe I'm blind and they are the original versions of the CGs, just cropped.
The screenshots on the android site are just to show the interface changes, anyway.
