I bought this movie used in a record store two years ago, and still haven't watched it.

Otherwise, I've only seen Akira Kurosawa movies. I think Stray Dogs was the last one I watched. It's insane because I thought it was made in the late 50s or early 60s, but it was made in 49. I can't believe they pretty much had all their shit together only 5 years after WWII.

probably the most powerful emotional event/feels in my life so far.

Watched kurosawa's 'Ikiru' while coming coming down from 1.8 grams of shrooms on a big 100'' projection screen.

I still dont know the right word to describe the all encompassing feeling of relativety, humanism and empathy I felt. Literally bawled through all of the 3 hours of this movie. Not only from sadness, but also happiness and even schadenfreude.

Absolutely adore kurosawa's works, but never got the time to get into other japanese filmakers. Any more recent filmmakers that also have this intensely humanistic approach?

Sakuran, based on the manga of the same name. I watched it without subs, but there may be some on the internet somewhere. The manga doesn't default to a "happy" like the movie does, though, and it's more historically accurate with the fashions, rather than the modern flair the movie has (the lead actress is half white). If you like one, definitely check out the other. They're both good.

>> No.15777140

As much as people love to hype it up and call it one of the greatest movies ever, Seven Samurai is actually a fantastic movie and it did live up to the hype for me.

Hidden Fortress on the other hand I thought was only "ok".

>> No.15777709

>>15770184
I watched the first half but the main character didn't feel at all like she fit into the setting. I wouldn't mind a standoffish courtesan but the way the film did it just made it feel like a modern day western woman was thrown into that situation. It was almost like she had no idea how social interaction worked in that time. I don't mind the idea of adding modern flair to a classical setting, but this felt more like wish fulfillment than an interesting thought experiment.
I had read part of the manga before and it felt less extreme in that sense, but that could also be because I'm more used to such exaggerated emotions from manga characters in general.
One thing the movie does really well is the set design though, a lot of it is damn good looking.

Not many Japanese movies focus on Women Samurai despite some having a prominent role in a few eras in Japanese history. I think his is somewhat a taboo because the famous assassin in the Boshin wars, Hitokiri Battosai, was hotly debated to be a woman. In modern times its shunned for some reason that this theory was even considered to be true. It wasn't even a small percentage of people who thought Hitokiri Battosai could have been a woman.

Probably because he was put to death with trumped up charges because they were afraid of Hitokiri Battosai. So, for them to execute a woman for being afraid of her meant it would have stained the Imperial name and the Emperors name as well. No one wants to see a woman put to death if possible.

I recommend watching this movie as its a rare scene to see women samurai discussed.
>>15690769
Its tragic and makes my stomach turn just thinking this shit actually happens not just in Japan but world wide. Japan seems to be some of the most degenerate in terms of underground sex industry.

This movie like many in Japan are not for the faint hearted. You could be thinking about this story and people in it for days bordering on almost sadness of real life people and where are society has decayed to in modern times.

Family Game
The Crazy Family
Exciting ero: Atsui hada

Those are the ones I've seen. I've also seen the erotic one Masayuki Suo did before he was famous, can't remember the title now. Does anybody know any similar, but newer movies? I usually stay away from new Japanese movies since most of them have that ugly HDTV look.

Kind of like a mixture between HOUSE and School of the Holy Beast.

If we all can push Funimation, Sentaifilms, or Media Blasters to pick this up we could see a subbed home video release by next year.

I was at a film festival this past week and there were a few Japanese movies there that I got to see.

> Assassination Classroom Graduation
As good as the first, but it should honestly be watched right after seeing the first one as the stories are pretty well connected.

> Hentai Kamen 2
Stupid as fuck, but in a fun way. Not as good as the first, but all of the Tobey Maguire Spiderman 2 references are pretty great with HK.

> Shimauma
Not a bad film by any stretch. Decently dark and does a good job of being close to the source manga it is based on.

> Chinyuki
Dumb as a ton of bricks, but it's also based on a fucking Man Gataro manga so you should be expecting that shit. Meanders a bit here and there, but there are some genuinely funny moments.

> Re:Born
Pretty basic so far as acting and story goes, but you shouldn't really be watching this movie for anything but Tak Sakaguchi beating the fuck out of random mooks using a legit fighting style at full speed. Some of the shit they pull off is amazing.

> Sadako vs Kayako
Okay, this movie should not be good. I mean, just thinking about it there is no easy the premise can be good, right? Well fuck, it's actually a really fucking entertaining movie. It hits all the right spooky notes with just a few things played really tongue in cheek, but it is mostly a straight j-horror done right.

I think that's everything I saw. I was around for Q&As for Tak Sakaguchi, Yudai Yamaguchi, and Ryo Ryusei if you guys had any questions or wanted to know anything else about their movies.

Just saw Onmyoji (2001) and liked it. A great bit of supernatural adventure full of Japanese mythology. As a sucker for Jidai-geki and ancient Japan, this movie was additionally nice for being set way back in the Heian Period, an era not seen in many films (sidebar: a definitive cinematic Tale of Genji has yet to be made even, and they could probably make an interesting "chick flick" on the life and stories of the witty Sei Shonagon of "Pillow Book" fame).

Anyone know the name of the movie that has an alien and a dead guy DP a girl, and then an alien invasion comes, so a news caster sings the American National Anthem, puts a dildo in his mouth and spits it at the camera before the credits role?

Lots of great recs in this thread.

Little Forest is really nice and comfy.

Petal Dance is probably one of the prettiest movies I've seen. The color palette and filter and the various shots look great. The director's films like >>15666619 come off as a little pretentious because of the way he uses dialogue. There's very little of it, and the way it's extended comes off that way, but I still enjoy the films.

All Around Us is good and overlooked film.

Just watched the first movie, summer/autumn. I like it, nice and comfy.

It really kinda is something only the japanese would make I feel. Pretty girl doing slice-of-life things in the boonies with the occasional lame pun/joke in between.

Don't watch if you expect a plot really.
