は alone means tooth. You don't have to worry about it too much though, in 99.99% of the cases it will be absolutely clear from the context that は is used in the sence of the topic particle and thus pronounced wa

The reason は sometimes is pronounced わ (i.e. when it is a particle) is because they used to be pronounced the same, always (so no matter what, if you saw a は　you pronounced it "wa"), but then Japanese language reforms took place following of WWII. (They got rid of ゑ　and ゐ, for example)
But, は-pronounced-"wa" was already too widely ingrained as a particle, so it was easier to leave it this way.

At least, that's what I get after 5 minutes of research, I could be totally off.

Not always. Only if it's used as a particle. There are some grammatical rules but basically it boils down to this: if it seems to separate two words its "wa" （これは良い） if it looks more like it's gonna be a ha-word it's "ha" eg はなし はてない or はい etc

No, the pronunciation didn't change after the war, just the writing. What happened was that the way Japanese was pronounced had gradually changed over the centuries (just like any language does--look at all the "rhyming couplets" in Shakespeare that don't rhyme anymore in modern English) but the kana writing system hadn't caught up with the changes, with the result that lots of words were written quite differently from how they were pronounced (again, just like modern English)

After the war, the kana system was reformed to be more strictly phonetic with respect to modern pronunciation. Among other things, this resulted in ゐ, ゑ and を being dropped since they didn't really exist anymore as distinct sounds from い, え, and お. However, the reformers decided for whatever reason that grammatical particles should still be written the old prewar way.

In short, the reason for は and へ instead of わ and え, and the reason there's a を that's only used to write one particle and nowhere else, is that those particles were the only part of written Japanese that *weren't* reformed.

Is there a system for when to use what reading for numbers? Is 47 yonjuu-shichi, shijuu-shichi, yonjuu-nana, arrrgh? There's no pattern I've been able to discern outside of counting up/counting down.

But if you have to know: には　is used to explicitly talk about things found in a certain location, for instance:

東京には大きいデパートがたくさんあります
There are lots of big department stores in Tokyo.
The sentence would probably be fine without the は, but there's a small difference. With は you're talking about the places and that sentence would answer a question like: "What's Tokyo like?"
The sentence without は would answer a question like "Where do I find lots of big departement stores?"

It's not really that big of a deal though, I wouldn't worry about it too much

I just started learning. I know about 60 kanji so far, but I have some questions.

1. Are there set rules how kanji are pronounced when combined with other kanji? Example: Hanabi being made of hana (flower) and hi (fire). Hi is pronounced bi in this case. Is this ALWAYS the case or do you sometimes pronounce the fire kanji differetly?

2. Do names follow the same rules as normal words or do they have unique kanji readings?

Kanji have a number of different readings, some only have 2, others up to 5++. There's no set rule on how to pronounce them when they're used as compounds, which is why I think that learning Kanji and memorizing all their readings is fruitless. I think you should rather memorize the Kanji, remember the words the Kanji appears in and learn how to pronounce that word.

You can't. Names can have multiple valid readings for the same kanji, but you'll eventually develop a feel for which one is the most likely.

I don't think the guy you're replying to means that you should learn just the readings of full words, but rather how the kanji are read in words that are actually used instead of just memorizing readings.

Normally it's either all on (btw most popular reading for jukugo) or all kun. There are many many exeptions and they often mix. sometimes you find words where both all-kun & all-on are valid japanese words.

Correction: There's no universal rule on how to pronounce them when used in compounds. There will always be exceptions. That said, memorizing readings of common Kanji will help tremendously, especially since most pronunciations are logical easy to guess.

Yeah, Katakana is harder to read, but you get used to it after a while; once you get a lot of the common words down, it's not too bad. It's a lot like learning a new English word, because you learn to recognize it by looking at its overall structure.

I get annoyed with things that tend to put a lot of actual Japanese words word in katakana for stylistic effect or whatever reason - even if I read the characters themselves as quickly as I would hiragana or kanji (which is not always) it makes me think about what the word is rather than just smoothly reading it the normal way.

I read 雨ニモマケズ the other day and it took me fucking forever considering it's only 30 or so lines. It's worst when an eroge I have on autoplay does it though, I always have to stop and go back.

Don't do that, katakana words = japanese words even if they resemble english/french/latin/whatever a bit. Some words can be "false friends" like ハンカチ for handkerchief.

I think its easier for newbies if you don't use casual forms. Instead of だ we should use です , ーます forms, じゃありません and so on. I think it's easier since you learn those at the beggining

IMHO awsum, learned most 常用漢字 using his method but there are many other approaches. May not work for people who feel embarrassed by mnemonics or want to use the language immediately.

The point is it's so fast to learn with Heisig you don't have to study it simultaneously. Just do Heisig first then the rest of the language. Makes it a lot quicker and easier in the long run, trust me.

Actually the thing is, I've been doing it. I'm about 60 pages in. The system I think is great, you really do remember the kanji. The unintuitive part about it though is you learn hardly anything about the kanji itself. All you have to connect with the kanji is a (often vague) keyword and maybe a short explanation. I was just curious about the experiences of others with his method and how it works out in the end, filling in all the blanks yourself.

If I were to start learning this shitstorm of a language as a hobby, where would I start? I've learnt central European languages in the past to a decent level so I have SOME experience for it, problem is from what I've seen and read Japanese seems to demand a different approach all together.

I've been reading through hellodamage.com/kanjidicks/main.htm#sectionone and glanced at guidetojapanese.org but if I decided one day to go for it and set myself some time, what would I do? Numbers -> basic grammar and phrases and just learn the radicals/pronunciation?

It's very good for learning hiragana, katakana, vocabulary and even some kanji, but the way it teaches grammar irks me since you only need to master the vocabulary (via minigames such as multiple choice, flash cards, memory and... ehm, whack-a-mole) in each lesson to advance to the next one. There aren't really any minigames that focus on grammar. At one point, it just throws all of the bases you need to conjugate verbs at you, tells you "yeah we need these later so go learn them" but never tests you about them (or even tells you WHAT you need them for until some later lessons).

The program is good for words and writing, but get something else for grammar.

Bridge builder is decent for particles, but the whole base and some of the adjective lessons did confuse me a bit. Memory was my favorite game (still need to unlock 2-3) because I could see the romaji and then think of the word, I wouldn't mind hiragana but it does slow down a lot. Flash card is decent too, but throwing 4 totally unrelated options can make it an elimination game, instead of really remembering the word.

Kanji grinding isn't really a problem for me, but what would the more experienced people recommend for grammar?

Haha, no. Similar kanji often have similar on-readings (Chinese derived readings), but they can mean anything, like read 読む ("yomu", on is "doku") and continue 続く ("tsuzuku", on is "zoku"). There can also be multiple kun (native) and even on readings of a kanji, so 食 produces both 食べる taberu (eat) and 食う kuu (also eat, but more informal).

For grammar? Hmm; I should have said that I'd be willing to answer any specific grammatical/vocabulary related questions -- I never studied Japanese in an institutional setting from the introductory levels, so I don't have much experience learning grammar from text books.

The study books for the JPT aren't too shabby for enriching one's knowledge of less common grammatical forms, but again, they assume a certain level of fluency.

If I were to seek some sort of job and/or residence over there, would a 4-year undergraduate degree suffice? Flashcards are just フラッシュ・カード; I'm not too sure about anything prepackaged or anything for the computer. in my own opinion, you're probably better off trying to do things in analog -- writing things out by hand or making your own flashcards, while tiresome, in the long run will give you better results than visual recognition alone. If there are particular books or comics you want to be able to read, try reading them, and look up every word or kanji you don't know and start compiling lists of vocab; it will take forever, but I think you'll see better payoffs for your diligence.

I'm currently using a Canon Wordtank V80 with kanji input, and it has served me well, although it's getting on in years. You could probably pick up something like mine up for under two hundred dollars at this point; when it comes to deciding what you want, however, you should have a clear idea of what you want to use the dictionary for. If you might be working with a third language, it might be worth investing in a dictionary with, for instance Chinese-Japanese or French-Japanese, or what have you.

Also, I'm not sure about newer models or other brands, but in my experience, kanji input is only functional for looking things up in the kanji-gen; you can't plug in kanji to the kojien, for instance, and get results.

Again, if you're just going to be using the language from your desk to read manga or play games or what have you, there's nothing wrong with your approach -- if you're going to have to negotiate the menu of a fish restaurant where the names of all the fish are written in kanji, and have to negotiate the method of preparation and the order of courses and what have you, or are asked to write something out by hand or what have you, then you'll be thankful for having your pocket dictionary and having written things out by hand.

Really, it depends; kanji and okurigana (the kana which follow verbs) were not standardized until relatively recently, so there actually used to be a greater degree of freedom in what one wrote in kana, what one wrote in kanji, or even what kanji one used, etc. Really, it comes down to being a matter of style and sensibility; you could write君の様な綺麗な女の子は如何して泣いて居るの, using as much kanji as possible, or きみのようなきれいなおんなのこはどうしてないているのwithout any at all, but while the former feels very stiff, the latter is much harder to read; usually one ends up somewhere in between, with 君のような綺麗なな女の子はどうして泣いているの。

I'm using Mnemosyne, it's pretty decent imo as an SRS goes.
Along with heisig's method, it works pretty well, although I had to remake the kanji db because both on the site were kind of shit.

For a dictionary, I had a Casio ex-word, with rather shitty hand-writing recognition, until i got the sonomama kanji ds rakubiki jiten, for the ds obviously. Awesome shit, with examples, synonyms and links to them, and amazing recognition, even with really bad scribbles.

For improving your writing by a fuckton, kageyama's method tadashii kanji kakitori kun kanken etc for the ds, does a pretty good job, showing you how a kanji is written(stroke order, hooks and stuff, proper placement and curves) even taking advance of the pressure sensitive screen on the ds to simulate a thin brush.

Fuck, I sound like a salesman. Hope this helps someone anyway.

熊 (bear) is just the jouyou 能 (ability) + 灬 (fire)
虎 (tiger) could be decomposed to maybe 卜(fortune) 厂 (cliff) with a hook at the top 七 (seven) + 儿 (legs)
