As nasty as it sounds, I never wash them, for fear of fading. That means making sure your clean when you get into bed, and showering almost everyday. I might get a second trudy and try washing her, since she's my favorite of all of them. I have to get some more Woolite and prob a laundry bag, or try even hand washing. This is pretty much what I do, for each cover I'll prepare a new bath of filtered water with a small amount of detergent. I gently knead the cover for a few minutes, let it sit for about 15, then knead it again before draining the wash water. Then I rinse twice with more filtered water.

I use filtered water because my tap water tastes like chlorine, and I wash them about every month or two.

Not all fabric is created equal. The only bootleg daki I've bought was 2wt and it pills up horribly compared to my other 2wt covers.

I personally like smooth knit the most, it's not quite as soft as 2wt but it's a lot more durable.

Their pillows are overpriced for the quality. I have two of their 2-way Tricot pillows and the material frays so easily.

If you're getting bootlegs, then all I can recommend is go for peach skin as even cheap peach skin covers can last, but their tricot is so noticeably bad. Shame too since its my Reimu cover ;_;

My hands are usually beat to shit since I do a lot of wood and metalworking in my spare time, and any jagged fingernail or rough skin has a tendency to catch on 2wt and cause pilling, at least in my experience. I don't have that problem with smooth knit so I use those for my sleeping pillows. I've felt a peach skin cover and I honestly don't like how it doesn't have much stretch to it.

Non-bootleg covers may seem horribly overpriced, but this is an instance where you do get what you pay for.

I own a couple of bootlegs in peach skin and they are all pretty good. They're not as soft as 2way tricot, but they are cheap and pretty durable. It's hard to get peach skin wrong.

2way tricot on the other hand can range from terrible to amazing. The bootleg tricots I have noticeably fray after even the slightest touch from your nails. They are also noticeably thinner than a quality cover, and as the other poster mentioned, my bootleg reimu daki has started to pill up.

My official covers on the other hand are damn soft and more durable than my peach skins.

I make all my pillow inserts. My favorite fiberfill is the silky soft stuff from poly-fil and use regular white cotton for the body. You can make a really decent insert for ~$30, and you can even go cheaper than that if you use less expensive fiberfill. Never buy anything from sewing stores full price though, they always have 30-50% off coupons you can use.
