Well /jp/, we've got a years worth of tracker data now and we're a majority of the way through this year. If anyone wanted to whip up a quick script to compare weekly ranking/volume of sales, I'd wager you could probably make a fairly accurate guess at what the year end top sellers will be.

The downside is that I've become a lot more comfortable reading stuff in moon as of late and thus haven't been buying stuff from mangagamer when there's a lull in order numbers(The empty space last month being a nice example). This is a minor issue, as without consistent numbers there's not much to pin estimates with. Therefore I think I'll move to just logging information without comment if that doesn't bother anyone.

Top 5 Ranking: http://pastebin.com/Wr2ESA1m
Popularity Sort: http://pastebin.com/mfJ2eA3z
Full Data Point List: http://pastebin.com/bYWGjzHn

As always, this tracker is powered by anonymous like you, so post order numbers if you've got em'.

Some of the shit he quotes as wrong is literally exactly what's written, and his corrections are more like Nintendo-brand omega localizations. That one about "not making problems worse" is literally
>"You shouldn't add to problems."

translated as

>"You're just making things worse."

which is likely fine in context, but he says it's wrong and should be
>"A raging gale is as likely to spread a fire as quench it..."

What the fuck.

I'm not defending mistakes. There's never an excuse, especially bad ones. But if it took ten hours to find only a dozen, that's really different from the standard Fuwalation where it's easy to find a dozen in the first fifteen minutes. Or Flowers, where it's easy to find a dozen in the first dozen lines.

Could be better, absolutely, but crucifying something you have to work to find errors in instead of all the other stuff where you can throw a dart and find major problems seems incredibly misguided.

It took a 90-hr playthrough for me to find 15 dialogue errors, to be exact (note: it's unlikely I was able to identify all errors). Probably half of that time was spent in gameplay rather than reading.

The message I wanted readers to take away is that companies (and critics) focus quite a bit on minor spelling and grammar and pay less attention to the rare but arguably much more important translation errors that are less obvious to their audience (who mostly have no Japanese knowledge). Demanding perfection is unreasonable, but perhaps we as an audience should reconsider our priorities. In the end, companies simply respond to what their audience wants. If they care about typos but not occasional context errors in the translation, then typos are what the company will focus on fixing.

You don't even know Japanese and most of your errors were changes in localization/editing, not proper mistranslations.
You'd have a much better case if you found a character who never said the correct lines, or some sort of plot twist that broke the narrative being mistranslated. But slightly rewording things is hardly mistranslation.

Still nobody in jail for patching the game. I guess those customs are pretty bad at taking your PC and playing through all your games before you get to pass.

JAST could have easily included all content from the beginning instead of being silly.

>> No.15549487

>>15549379
Allow me to go through it, as a neutral third party.

The first one is a translation mistake.
>年は砂月と変わらんだろう。
Even if you don't know the context, the line clearly refers to someone's age (年は) which is same (変わらん) as 砂月's (砂月と), presumably (だろう). JAST is completely off. Theoretically you might not understand how 変わらん means "the same". For that see http://thesaurus.weblio.jp/content/変わらない
>複数のものにさほど違いがないさま

The second one is mostly a stylistic thing.

Third one is a genuine mistranslation.
なんてどういうこと expresses the speaker's dissatistaction about what precedes it. Another example: http://kosonews.com/blog-entry-20680.html

Fourth one, he's right JAST's translation is wooden, but his is total lol, yeah.

Fifth one, both JAST and him are bad, someone already posted details ITT.

Sixth one might feel like a stylistic difference, but he's completely right that よく知っている refers to one's well of knowledge, not inteligence. See meanings of the phrase here:
http://thesaurus.weblio.jp/content/よく知っている
That said, "well-informed" doesn't feel like the best choice in English, since it can give the impression of the person in question learning the information from someone else, which doesn't really have to be the case here. Why complicate things? Best would be just "knowledgeable".

Seventh, the first sentence is fine in both versions, but the second one is a mistranslation on JAST's part. 何処かの誰かさん means "a certain someone" - a roundabout way to refer to someone specific without saying their name. To be just "someone somewhere", it would need to be just 何処かの誰か. Note that not even every native Japanese knows the difference in English: http://detail.chiebukuro.yahoo.co.jp/qa/question_detail/q1151396411

Eight, the Japanese line is pretty weird, so I question if he retyped it correctly. Nonetheless, you can't really say 手を出す refers to fights, as in actual combat, there, the sexual connotations are clear since target of the actions would be a girl. Perhaps some ambiguity like "Don't try anything." works best. The reader will pick up on as much as he manages from that.

Ninth is a small stylistic thing.

Tenth is a mistranslation. 望ちゃんは自分のことだけを考えて is clearly a positive command.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_verb_conjugation#te_form
>As a simple command:
>食べて Tabete: "Eat."
>読んで Yonde: "Read."

Eleventh again a mistranslation. No ambiguity here.
>逃がすな
http://www.guidetojapanese.org/learn/complete/command
>In order to command others to not do an action, simply attach 「な」 to the end of the verb.

Twelfth a mistranslation based on misunderstaning the に過ぎない
http://www.jgram.org/pages/viewOne.php?tagE=nisuginai

Granted, the last three mistakes are likely a product of rushed work than lack of knowledge. Thy're all basics and considering the mistakes are just complete 180°s on the actual meaning, one can assume the translator just had a momentary switches in judgement.

Aroduc is well known to be a fast translator, so I guess it's not surprising that he compromises accuracy to some degree. It was all reviewed by Makoto before release as well, but with that much text, it's hard to get everything.

I paid careful attention to the credit roll. Makoto wasn't there. I know Aroduc said this but he also seems to have been out of the loop. Editors in the credit roll included DxS and Tolrin. DxS is definitely a different person, and I don't think Tolrin is Makoto either.

Translation's hard, and with only one translator, it's really easy to make stupid mistakes like that, no matter how good you are. Think of how many times you missed carrying a one in math, or misread a sentence in English because you glossed over a word.

That's why professional game localizations usually use multiple translators and fewer editors. The chance that multiple translators skim over the same error is tiny, and if translators actually know what they're doing and are working together with a style guide, they don't need the text to be cleaned up much.

Nintendo's approach to rewrite everything for maximum lulz notwithstanding.

Some of the text issues were introduced at this stage (the text color markers appearing for example), which was after the testers reviewed the game. I presume it was Makoto given the timeline of two years between Aroduc finishing testing and Jast finally deciding it's ready, since that delay sounds pretty normal for Makoto, but I couldn't say for sure.

If these errors are rare, then fine. It's understandable. Not excusable, necessarily, as perfection is always the goal, but understandable. If all you're looking for is the manner of address (the honorific), even someone with no Japanese knowledge could pick that up from the voices. Such aficionados do listen to the voices... right?

In any case, with Steam releases becoming the standard I think we'll see fewer releases with honorifics, other than perhaps nukige where they might stick around. There is more than honorifics that cause troubles. You should use first names in western languages, and I can only assume most translators forget that and just translate the last name from kanji and throw away honorifics.

And you know if people translated it properly they'd be all "Hey why is voice saying name A when the text says name B? Have they screwed up the translation?".

You are pretty much set up to lose regardless of what you do. So keeping honorifics at least make some people happy that it is correct in a Japanese sense.

Sekai Project did a short Q&A with their post AX stream, though with different people then Dovac. Most of it was recap or the usual meaningless questions you would expect in Q&A, though they answered some other stuff.

Baldr Sky - For now their goal is to get out the Steam version, though they know that people have "questions about how it will be released".
Grisaia no Meikyuu - uncut version is waiting on stuff from Frontwing
Grisaia no Rakuen - They'd like to have it out by end of the year
Maitetsu - They will look at the uncut release after it is released on Steam.

So a presentation for Lose would be "We are the publishers of the best visual novels in the industry like Clannad and Grisaia and we sell 25000+ volumes on Steam".

He doesn't really want to admit the game must have had an anime, they have to be on 50% off sale and any adult product turned all-ages must have a patch.

My personal opinion? It's kind of boring. I liked Monobeno a lot more. There's a lot of memes about Maitetsu having train info dumps--and they're not wrong, but there's also political stuff as well. It tries to be high brow, but I just couldn't buy into it. It's a mix of weird lolige elements as well as other more serious themes much of which I couldn't take very seriously. And it was so dull.

Also I have to say I don't like the transition to full Live2D. It gets pretty jarring seeing the girls CONSTANTLY stare at you and the animation looks uncanny and kind of cheap (even though it was probably pretty expensive to produce an entire VN like that).

I've heard others share similar experiences with it. It's not an average visual novel, but I felt like it was just slightly above average. Which is disappointing given all the months of hype and marketing surrounding it.

I wonder how well it sold?

It does not appear so, though I was simply quoting the Q&A response. The answer given when asked about an 18+ version was "No information so far, there is nothing to say, move along people", followed by talking about how wonderful the story, game, world and characters are, and ended with saying that after it is released on Steam an uncut version is something they would look into.

Even if the story were great though, being a title and company unknown to the Steam crowd, and the likely high price tag, would still make it a hard sell (uncut or not). Art can help sell a game, but it can only go so far to help with full length titles, and considering the lack of success of recent titles with a good story the story only goes so far too. Granted it probably won't do terribly in terms of raw numbers compared to similar titles, but expectations are likely through the roof, (and especially would have been when the license was acquired), because of the huge numbers by their cheap franchises and the good sales of early long releases such as Clannad and the first Grisaia release.

http://exhentai.org/s/07fce2cf8e/869167-76
http://exhentai.org/s/e1a053e728/869167-622

The boobs here actually sink into the flesh a bit, have actual spacing (thank god), and generally don't look like terrible implants. Granted, they're just a bit too "round" but that's the concession you have to go with in anime styles most of the time, as a lot of people prefer that unnatural roundness. Red-head seems to have breasts which look too perky for their size, but, oh well.

I also like how there are variable areola sizes and that they nipple area themselves have actual puff--too often do moege artists fall completely flat in this regard by giving everyone dot nipples.

>but it's a bummer that most of the girls have severely disporportioned bodies
They do look significantly better in this regard for the CG, but this is just a problem you will find in the anime art-style in general (mostly in the modern, "moe" style). Bodies are all about unrealistic stark contrasts between twiggy bodies, and high amounts of fat in the desirable areas (breasts, butts, thighs). It's a stylistic choice. Personally I don't mind it.

Arunaru in particular and MG as a whole refuse to respect author's wish and intend to rename one of the main heroines just because. It's not even a case of changing the name for esthetical reasons (e.g. アーナス -> Arnice), it isn't a romanization (neither transliteration nor a transcription) of her name, it's not an alternative spelling, it's just a completely different name altogether.
By the way, the video is the only material with incorrect romanization, everywhere else - and most importantly in-game - it's written correctly (YU-KI on the official JP game site, ゆうき on DMM or even ユウキ on EGS).

That said, the writer himself should have probably tried to be more involved in the localization in the first place if he was going to complain about it. You can. Foreign names are often spelled in a few different ways when going from language to language.

Regarding the long u sound, you mean like "eulogy", and "yule", and "tune", and "unicorn"? Those long "u" sounds? Why couldn't "Yuki" be pronounced with a long "u"?

>> No.15561161

Yuki is a perfectly acceptable romanization of 友希. Especially with names and places some flexibility is generally allowed (or important) to ensure English speakers can easily read and pronounce the name effectively. It's why 'oh' is sometimes used in place of 'ou', and the long vowels are often dropped from names, like Yuki in this case, or places like Tokyo.

English doesn't have an equivalent of the long vowel, so keeping it serves little point and only really makes it harder for those that don't understand Japanese. Writing Toukyou would be way harder for average English speaker to both read and pronounce, even when it is for all intents and purposes read the same as Tokyo, so we use the latter as the official English spelling.

To build on this point, in English pronunciation, two consecutive u's in English is sometimes pronounced as two SEPARATE u sounds. Like "continuum" is pronounced continue-UM. "Residuum" is pronounced residue-UM. So putting two u's together in English doesn't automatically mean a long u sound in English, just in case people thought it did. And achieving a long u sounds with consecutive u's is exactly the same as the long u sound with a single u. Compare 'vacuum' and 'eulogy'.

So putting two u's together to try and convey a looong u sound is pointless in English. Unless the two u's are denoting two separate u sounds, like Yooh-uk-i, then I'd omit it.

Generally a double u sound in English results in a mid-central vowel but the emphasis on it varies. It's always a double vowel sound though, although not the same one as in Japanese.

The general standard for converting names to the basic latin alphabet is to represent them as accurately as possible using only those characters, not to write them as close to English pronunciation as possible. Yuuki may not be read the same in English but Yuki doesn't give you the necessary information to pronounce it properly at all. Your correcting my pronunciation of vacuum only strengthens my point, it doesn't diminish it.

Furthermore, alphabets are aural in nature. You cannot construct a word without FIRST taking into account how it sounds and how it's pronounced. If the spelling doesn't follow pronunciation, it's wrong - foreign or no.

Because of this, Yuki might give a couple of alternate pronunciations to the word, but it's preferable to Yuuki because, by your argument, the only English pronunciation is the wrong one.

You forgot the most important point; It doesn't have MOE and UGUU anime girls on the cover.

Things are different now, but I remember pre-release just about everyone on /vn/ was going, "It doesn't have cute anime girls so I won't read it xd"

Which is a shame because, even though I personally prefer moeblobs, the art style is perfectly fine in its own right, and many of the sprites are quite beautiful. It's just a different style.

Not at all comparable since Umineko has technically shit art that look like the doodlings of a child. Fata has technically proficient art that look quite good. How the hell is Michel intersex? She's born a normal girl, who wants to be a man, and somehow she becomes a genderless thing - the body of a man without the genitals. Like an angel or something. Intersex requires to have at least some genitals.

Basically, everyone starts out physically female in the womb, and male characteristics develop as a fetus's brain releases a hormone called androgen. This is the same hormone that causes a man's body to change at puberty. There's a condition where a person's body doesn't recognize it, which ranges from just being somewhat feminine and having a small penis to looking completely female but having testes instead of ovaries and having an XY genotype (a lot of people with the latter variation spend a lot of their lives not even knowing it). I would say localizing games that your core audience, the people who keep you in the black (Yuri, nukige, Otome, BL fans) don't want in an attempt to pander to people who only make noise and don't buy your games is already a "fuck the fans" attitude. But I'm forgetting myself here, you aren't allowed to criticize MG on /jp/ anymore.

MG likely license those story titles because they're fans of those story titles and there is demand for such story titles. The problem is that those titles are usually more expensive than most people are willing to pay. Look at Conjurer, he's obviously a fan of Propeller's titles, but Tokyo Babel's sales likely killed the chance of other titles from that company from coming over.

There's nothing wrong with trying out new things, anon. Their all-ages shift from last year has apparently failed, so I'd expect more 18+/all-ages dual releases.

Didn't Propeller have a ton of interesting looking school girl titles? You'd think they'd go for that kind of stuff since it would sell.

Well, Steam was really hot at the time that they licensed those titles. They were Propeller's newest titles and were in HD, so MG must've thought that they'd sell well. They wouldn't have to deal with cut content complaints either, because they were all ages. They were what people said they wanted, but those titles weren't as popular as Propeller's other titles. I'd rather have an 800x600 great story, then a 720p or less mediocre one. Pygmalion could still sell well because of yuri though.

He translated Tokyo Babel, which people have said the translation for is bad, so what does his opinion matter?
