Bad. I barely ever read, and I'm sick of doing more than 300 reviews on anki. Statistics say I know 1380 kanji, but when I ever I pick something up to read all I do is go:

Anki and other SRL apps are useful to _review_ kanji and vocabulary only. You probably want to write things down once in a while, it helps a lot.

You're also supposed learn grammar and practice reading/writing on top of that. That's probably what you need to do most right now since you seem to have trouble understanding sentences.

Work through either of these:

日本語を知る isn't the best phrasing for what you want to say. I presume you want to say you know a bit of Japanese, "know" as in "understand" the meanings of words and sentences.

日本語を知る is knowing the language more like a linguist would. It's rules and inner workings.

That's why you can find books called 日本語を知る aimed at Japanese readers. Japanese people already know meanings of Japanese words and sentences, but they might need to refresh their knowledge on the more complex workings of the language - turns out to be mainly 敬語.

Like I just said in another thread, I'd be ready to pass JLPT 2 by now if I weren't so lazy. My weaknesses are kanji (writing mostly, since I never do it, but I could stand to be able to read more) and listening (although I've got auditory processing issues that make understanding English speakers hard sometimes too, but excuses excuses I should be able to get better at it.) And naturally I sound like a retarded grade schooler when I try to speak it on my own. So yeah, I actually have a ways to go yet. At least my pronunciation is good, not that that's hard.

And I know the JLPT isn't a good measure of true 'fluency', as in even natives have trouble with JLPT 1, but at level 2 I look a lot more attractive to hire for translation purposes and I want that sweet hireability boost. I feel like A and B should be verbal phrases here.

Note that this is different from
A は言うまでもなく B
B, not to mention / let alone A
where A and B are noun phrases.

>how is that japanese going

I started learning Japanese in january last year, but after learning how difficult it is, I lost my motivation and stopped.
However I went to Japan a few months ago and it blew me away, so I manned the fuck up and started again.

Learning 4 months now, learned 1500 words and read 2 grammar books, Japanese the Manga Way and Tae Kim.

I couldn't read shit for the first 3 months, but it got better now and I understand quite a bit when I try to read something.
Im kinda busy currently so I can't do more than my reps, but once I got more free time I'll start reading VNs via texthooker.

Do you think it's worthwhile to apply for two years in Japan as a "Research Student" after I finish my master's degree?

The tests are a joke for me since they're supposed to be passable by beginners and I'm studying Japanese for half a decade by now, but I wonder if "Research Student" is a worthwhile endeavor. Ideally, you're supposed to find a job during your two years stay, I guess.

Or do you think it's better to go for a Ph.D. in my own country?

You're working from what you think that in Japanese ought mean in English and working backwards from a conclusion based on your assumptions. Expose yourself to the langauge more and stop using whatever scraps of online usage you can gather in order to justify your obnoxious obsession with being "right" on the Internet, for fuck sake.
Either that or go back to /a/.

Both 終止形 and 連用形+助動詞 forms of the verb are used and grammatically correct with that pattern. There is more to Japanese than Tae Kim so I'd suggest you spend more time becoming acquainted with Japanese and less time trying to make corrections of other people when your corrections aren't accurate to begin with.

Are you aware of the difference?

したほうがいい fits better there. As in, of course I shouldn't have asked on 4chan, so I can't argue with the advice in this case, but you can't generally say people should always decide everything by themselves. If anything people are more likely to seek and provide advice with such life decisions.

A good start. Try Tae Kim's grammar guide, it's short, concise, easy to understand. Make sure to memorize the vocab at the beginning of each chapter, and don't discourage if it takes a while to understand some of the examples.

I really don't understand how I ever learned English. Don't even remember actively studying much, and I never really "grinded" vocabulary like I do with Japanese. For all the time I already invested in Japanese, it sure doesn't feel like I've achieved much.

>> No.15544321

Probably because you're grinding anki instead of doing actual reading. Stop doing core, and get your 20 new words a day from something you enjoy reading.

For me, day to day progress feels like nothing. But then I catch a glimpse of something I haven't seen in a year or two, and I can read it, and it reminds me how far I've come even if I still have a long way to go.

You might be right. It's just that finding something enjoyable to read without being overly difficult is rather hard. After all, most decent reading material is aimed at adult native speakers.
