>> No.15453210

>>15453167
They have never had an 18+ panel, but have announced uncut releases at previous panels such as 2236 A.D. at Anime Central last month. All it means is they can't show explicit content directly (as well as perhaps some restrictions on stuff like language), as opposed to MangaGamer who can go and show explicit promotional material for their upcoming nukige in the middle of their panel.

They very well may announced some censored only releases, and I'd be surprise if they announced any sort of uncut release for Maitetsu which they have previously said would be addressed at AX. However, the fact that their panel isn't 18+ isn't something to draw conclusions from about upcoming announcements.

No. The reason we're not doing 18+ Himawari is because the only release that was 18+ is the original doujin release and every subsequent release has been all ages because that's how the creators want it as far as I know.

That is how it works in Japan yes. You make 18+ version because you are worried about sales. Then you have maxed your adult sales and saw people praised your story so you go all-ages to try and cash in more.

The problem is when you localize. If you bring over your new and fancy all-ages, the people don't have the adult version to choose from. So the large amount of initial fans that were in Japan, get screwed outside Japan.

It is also a new thing for Japan, but foreigners hate censorship. Mosaic and all-ages are the worst insults they can send our way. If they realized skipping adult games is equal to placing a "Please pirate my product" sign outside their store, perhaps they would think twice.

tl;dr: This is whining.

But the discussion around Himawari could as well have been a discussion about Ghostbusters. You'd have someone claim the remake is "better art" and "not as patriachy" as the first one so it would be easier to sell.

Some would say they'd prefer the original, but then they would be called out that it has bad art and is unsellable. Also the producers didn't really want to make a new Ghostbusters 3, so this remake is what they really wanted all this time. So we should appreciate their opinon about what Ghostbusters we should be watching.

And naturally we can't just patch in the old ghostbusters in the new one, so the only choice is to just sell the new one. If you don't like it, you don't have to watch any ghostbusters.

(Hint: The actual solution is to sell the old version if people want it.)

This is kind of funny in hindsight. Sekai did end up delivering 18+ Grisaia despite accusations they would only release the all-ages versions, and now Front Wing is trying to shamelessly cash in on the Western market with questionable business practices (suddenly releasing Chiruchiru Michiru on their own, intending to release CG/Music gallery as DLC for Sharin, making a Huniepop clone with recycled assets from earlier games).

>>15455739
The reasons people give has changed over time. I think it started out with criticism of Kickstarter use (arguing KS is only for indie devs), then accusations of censorship (people didn't believe Sekai's promises of 18+ versions), dovac being a prick to people criticizing Sekai Project on various places, then complaints about translation quality (mostly based on Nekopara; this argument has become less used recently as later releases have generally been better), and recently complaints about 'oversaturation of the market' (that same market MG had trouble selling 1k copies of a given game to? Sales are better than ever) and flooding Steam with OELVN junk (which was happening before Sekai Project and most Steam OELVNs aren't from Sekai Project).

Though if you ask me, and this is an opinion I've held from the very start, /jp/ hates Sekai Project because it very intentionally shifted the market towards a different audience. We are becoming irrelevant. The market increasingly caters to the Steam VN newbies rather than the 'core' fanbase (though this is increasingly becoming a misnomer). Dovac seriously fanned the flames by blatantly admitting we are not the target audience. By achieving success with a new audience - one that actually pays for the games - other companies are also increasingly focusing towards people we dislike.

And personally, I think we deserved this. I've been buying VNs since 2009, but the very concept of buying VNs instead of always pirating them was laughed at. We're vocal about what companies should do to please us, but we barely ever pay them for their efforts. We're a terrible fanbase and have only grown worse over the years. It only makes sense to abandon us for a far more profitable and easier to please audience.

The lack of uncut releases is the main concern I have. With their doujin and OELVN stuff, they have generally delivered with uncut releases, and G-Senjou is the only censored only released thus far (though the Grisaia situation is a pain in the ass). But if one looks at their list of upcoming titles now, they have half dozen big 18+ titles with no uncut release announced. I won't necessary hold Maitetsu against them if it turns out to be censored only (beyond Dovac's "we made a decision, but we will tell you later build up") as I have my doubts anyone in the market would release it uncut right now. But while it might end up being a moot point if they happen to deliver with uncut releases for their upcoming big titles, at this moment it is concerning that they have an impressive list of titles and won't say anything on if they will be released uncut or not.

There's also the fact that Steam sales numbers for VNs have definitely dropped lately. It's clear that VNs were somewhat of a fad on Steam and many people have just moved on. Anything that's not as famous and Muv Luv or Grisaia might not sell more than on MG's site.

>There's also the fact that Steam sales numbers for VNs have definitely dropped lately.

Is this really the case, or have recent releases not appealed to the Steam audience (as they were more things the old fanbase is interested in)? Clannad Side Stories sold 3,229 ± 1,530 copies according to SteamSpy. Although they haven't updated their convention page with E3 stuff, so perhaps not. Jast wouldn't surprise me this year, just because they have been doing regular blog posts on their DevLog.

At the very least though, I suspect it's very likely that some previews going up before AX would require a new template by Thursday.

Sekai posted the number of AB announcements last time just two days before the panel, which in this case would force me to make a new template just a few hours before mangagamer's panel(which sucks the fun out of making guesses). That said, I'm actually fairly certain that they probably only have three judging by the amount of placeholders on their convention page, so if I were to bet, I'd say that it'll probably be fine.

For jast, well, I guess there could be a first time for everything. If you want to enhance that chance though, you could try asking their tumblr/devlog. So far as I know the guy that runs that isn't going to AX, so he might see it and answer it.

I'm not too bothered about updating a template if I have to though.

I have to think there will be quite a bit of upcoming disappointment, even by companies that are only looking at titles like Libra or Kindred Spirits to set their expectations. Titles like Love Sweets and Sora wo Aogite Kumo Takaku are likely only the tip of the iceberg with regards to Japanese companies localizing their own titles, and I'm sure plenty more titles in development are like Chrono Clock, Maitetsu, or Wagamama High Spec, either having localization start before the Japanese release or at least being developed with localization in mind. Additionally, there are likely a half dozen more E2/NextNinja type localization startups out there as well, all seeing Steam and Kickstarter as a quick way to get easy cash with little effort. Obviously some efforts will be successful, especially those with famous titles or have the luck of working on the type of title that will do well on Steam, but many more are going to likely lead to nothing but disappointment and be nothing more than a waste of time and money.

They didn't even bother actually playing it themselves it seems. Worst of all, their so-called in-game tutorial only teaches you the fastest way to lose, or more specifically, how to play HuniePop's "match three" instead of PP's "grab any piece and shuffle the board with it".
Don't even get me started on a VN segments. Did any of their voice actress die out of boredom while recording? And what was the last VN you've played which had no autoread mode? How about a censored uncensor patch?

I'll never understand this mindset, as well as "be grateful you're getting this shit or you'll get nothing", although the latter can be simplified as having no standards/tastes.

>I don't know how the western fanbase continues to put up with Ryuukishi, and I honestly feel that it's damaging to the community as a whole to continue to obsess this much over a single work so long after the fact. The amount of Umineko discussion is one of the reasons people who read untranslated eroge feel so disconnected from the broader western fanbase, and it's not hard to see how stifling this level of obsession can be if you take a step back. This applies to other games as well (Fate and Majikoi, for example) and I suppose to a degree it comes part and parcel with the reality that you guys are exposed to such a tiny slice of what's out there, but when the game in question is something as obviously and majorly flawed as Umineko, I can't help but feel a sense of unease, I guess you could say.

...

>Honestly, I shouldn't have even posted in here. The way I approach the medium as a whole and what I look for out of eroge/VNs are simply too far removed from the western fanbase's to have any sort of meaningful discourse with people using translations, and I accept that. But at the same time, as someone who helped build the community as it is today, I guess I'm unable to fully suppress my irritation at the way it hasn't developed into the ideal I imagined for it over the years.

Wow, he really let it get to his head. Not in the ironical Moogy-heika-dono way, but it seems like he really is convinced he played a huge role in the growth of the translation scene. Moogy, you only accelerated the process. TLWiki facilitated translations, but it did not truly create anything. It was the host, not the source. "The Chaos;Head project and other high-profile translations from TLWiki and related groups" implies TLWiki was a fan translation group. It never was. The various TLWiki projects were all made by different teams, some of which shared members - and that was the power of TLWiki, connecting people. But TLWiki never 'produced' anything; the groups using it as a host did. Everything that happened back then would still have happened even without TLWiki, if perhaps slower and less efficiently.

I can't understand how all localization teams are retards though. It should take very little knowledge about the market to know that you can pick all-ages only titles and sell all-ages of them and get great feedback and sales.

Yet they almost all insist on taking adult games and cut the content and then try and sell it and get upset customers and bad ratings.

Give me Amagami, Idolmasters, Galgun, or anything else insanely popular from Japan that only exist in all-ages and I'll instant buy them. But if you just take adult verisons and cut them down I'll just sit and wait until I get an uncut game.

I'm sure that will go real well.

Literally the most kikeish VN kickstarter I've seen.

I'm okay with this, they're one of the few translators who do good work, and bettery yet, they translated a bunch of Takumi games.

Dunno if they'll be successful though.

I've never actually read any of the VNs they've done, are they approved by the jay?

>> No.15468708

>>15468664
Not necessarily, nothing indicates they are doing more then translation work for people who hire them, and they don't list distribution under their services on their about page. Though someone other than Sekai Project, like a Japanese company, could surely hire them as a way to go around Sekai Project.

Too early to tell. What it's done so far has been with zero promotion so it's a question of whether or not they can get people to write about it.

I/O was Jay approved although the game itself might not be your cup of tea. Lots of redundant reading and skipping due to the time travel theme.

Yeah. This would be completely different if Sekai Pro's were running the kick starter instead of Tokyo Mode or whatever they're called
