I would say we could get along over mutual problems with how we see our lives, but I would probably just go to Eirin for counselling and pills.
I dont get why she is worried about "Muh lack of purpose" I would just tell her thats how every human feels, no one is born with a purpose (excluding royalty, but most of them arent useful anyway).

>> No.15253777

Kogasa really is the most compelling 2hu. Here she is, a usually inanimate object that was somehow magically granted conscience, and to what end? So she could do something she sees no real rational reason for, and that she's bad at it anyway? I think many on /jp/ can sympathize.

She is worried about a lack of purpose because she is literally a Youkai that came about from being a neglected unused object.

Kogasa has no use, neither do humans. You find your own purpose. Even then you dont really have a use as life isnt something that needed to exist, it just does.
Besides Kogasa has more of a purpose than most people. Some people have their purpose as treating the sick (Eirin), convicting criminals (Eiki), teaching others (Keine) , guarding things (Meiling), spreading religious crap for the sake of it (Miko, Byakuren, Sanae and Reimu) and serving others (Sakuya). Kogasa doesnt do any of these, she just makes people happy.

She's friends with Kyouko, another moe youkai.
Not gonna lie, in terms of moe I think the Buddhist faction s pretty OP, only SDM comes close.

Speaking of which, Kogasa could just work for Remi as her parasol. Remi enjoys having servants, and Kogasa wnats to be used.
Allthough it's cuter when she's purposeless.
>Recently, a youkai carrying an umbrella, even when it's not raining, has been seen wandering around the human village. Its identity is, surprisingly enough, a babysitter.
>She acts on her own accord. If there are crying children in the east, it startles and comforts them, and if there are laughing children in the west, it startles and makes them cry. Those are the aspirations of Kogasa Tatara

"I don't really get the whole picture, but in the outside world, babysitters fly through the sky using an umbrella[1]. When I heard of that, I decided to take a shot at it myself. I mean, children are pretty easy to scare. "

You know I wonder, youkai need belief from humans to survive, but does that belief have to come from fear? I mean I'd believe someone was a supernatural being if they displayed their powers in front of me, regardless of if they intended to harm me or not. Maybe youkai are just too stuck in their spooky thing innawoods ways to see that there are other options.

Maybe it's just belief in general, rather than belief in their powers. Maybe just the belief that a ghost for example is, well, a ghost, it's enough for them to live off of it.
Showing others your powers is a pretty surefire way to get belief, though. If a kappa drilled my ass I'd know for sure that it was a kappa.

However, Kogasa always carries that umbrella around with her because of reasons we all know, so it's easy for her to get recognition. Maybe that's the reason she has an easy-going life unlike most other youkai.

>> No.15258725

>>15258610

I think it depends on what supernatural being it is. The lines are blurred sometimes, especially with belief vs faith.

It's canon that people (or even groups of people) can become a god though faith, and that running out of it will revert them back to whatever they were before- but that some gods (like Suwako) really will pop if they run out of faith. Could a youkai become a god and live that way?

Artifact youkai can transpose their entire being onto another object (Raiko, etc). IIRC in one of the older print works Tanuki can become 'stuck' in human form if they settle down with humans for extended periods.
Yamabiko are dying out because of lack of belief.

Well I suppose some species like Yamabiko would have it tougher than others. Then again, there are multiple versions of some legends and mythical beings. Maybe if someone made a new version of the Yamabiko myth where they're dog-like youkai that copy sounds they hear in a similar manner to parrots, and that version became popular, could they continue to exist even with knowledge of how echoes really work?

>>15258762
That also brings in the question, how would the changing beliefs of humans affect the look and behaviour of youkai? Obviously the more detailed the description the less room for speculation, but still. Going by your example, would the 'second generation' Yamabiko have dog ears and generally behave like wild dogs, except the whole 'shout things back to the person who said it' aspect? In any case, I'd wager that such Yamabiko would generally be a spook factor rather than a simple explanation of echoes.
Some nice food for thought.

No, but many of the youkai in Gensokyo wish to eat or kill humans and are doing what is in their nature to survive anyway. Kogasa is a rare case where she sucks so bad at spooking people she gets her belief otherwise. If she was good at terrifying people she would just do that. Rumia/Mystia/Chen/etc can attack humans and get belief that way and I think youkai like Rumia just want to attack and eat people because it's her nature.

This is best seen in that fairies chapter where Aya spooks the shit out of Reimu without lifting a finger, not because she's powerful but because she plays into the basic human fear of the unknown.
