Dude, terminals are more likely to come out than middle tiles. When he opened the hand one 9p was discarded. Seems like a viable option to go for sanshoku there, especially since he just needed any cheap hand to get in 3rd place. I'm not saying that it's definitely better to keep the hand closed, but it's certainly not as obviously false as you make it seem.

by counting tiles, however, you can work out how likely you are to draw each tile, and thus work out the efficiency/difficulty of each yaku from your current hand, as well as when to go on the defensive, and what tiles are the safest; the learning aspect would mostly be in reacting to and predicting human behavior and exploiting it

the AI would probably be a lot different to how alpha go is done, as it would have difficulty planning more than a turn or two ahead due to the monstrous number of possibilities

Aside of amount of cards (52 v 136), mahjong works a lot different than poker.

In mahjong, you actively make your hand by draw-and-discard process. That also includes using other players' discards. While in poker, you only rely on your and the dealer's hand.
In mahjong, your outcome result and amount comes entirely from the hand you make, while in poker, your hand only decides whether you win or lose. No difference between high card or RSF.
In mahjong, there are lots of information you can get using tile discards etc, while still retaining some degree of randomness from the tile wall. While in poker, at most, your decision comes from 7 cards.

The closest card game to mahjong is gin rummy, and even then, the pattern combination, and thus the outcome, you can make is much wider in mahjong.

Odd thing is, mahjong really looks heavily dependent on your draws and your starting hand, but as you watch the excellent players play, you can see that somehow they get into tenpai almost every time without fault, and they only edge each other by being there first. It's a balance of luck and skill to make up for the lack thereof.

I'm almost to 4dan and I'd say yeah. While Ippan games are highly unpredictable and can be fun like 7447, the quality of play is much better. You're also much less likely to encounter things like disconnecters. Plus you don't have to deal with nonames who may as well be dropbots.

If it's much harder it's probably because you need to learn a little defence to round out what you know. Basic betaori along with suji and kabe is all I use and I don't often deal in anymore. But I'm not as good as many other people who play here.

So I recently got an Android phone and want to play mahjong on my downtime when I'm away from computers. I don't see any real mahjong apps (they're all stupid tile matching mahjong apps) and tenhou redirects me to the html5 beta. The best I found was https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mjguy.android.games.mjfjpfree which hasn't been updated in two years, and I keep seeing references to a "Saki Mahjong" but all the links I find to the play store are dead so I'm guessing it got taken down or something.

And the tenhou beta just keeps quitting on me on bot games because it keeps complaining that my wifi or phone network keeps cutting out even though my other apps aren't having problems.

I guess no phone mahjong for me.
