Doukyuusei series.
Kakyuusei series (Pretend Nanase is the main heroine).
Flutter of Birds
Giniro
Dragon Knight series.
Air
Tsukihime/Higurashi no Naku Koroni
Saya no Uta
To Heart

A little cliche, but these should cover the basics. And yes, I am aware I am a bit of an ELF(Rest in peace) fan.

A classic, maybe? I do not like Kanon because it has too much magical aids. Air less so. Also, the music is way better. This is of course my personal opinion. Feel free to recommend OP some other classic games.

Of course, if you want a history lesson, OP, I would tell you to go play Tenshi-tachi no Gogo series for PC98. It was one of the games who pretty much started the eroge series. It is quite crappy and linear though.

I've played Muramasa, Baldr Sky, Subahibi, and Saku-uta, Chaos;Head, Dies Irae, Asairo, etc...but I've yet to try Ever 17, Yu-No, Kanon, Clannad, etc...

I feel like I should play Kazoku Keikaku, Yu-No, Doukyuusei, and so on, but I'm not even caught up on recent stuff yet. Am I missing out? I might be missing references to them, I suppose.

Treat eroge as if they were books: Favor the classics and those who have withstood the test of time first. Indulge in new authors that have good reviews intermitently.

Higurashi is much better as a VN, so it's well worth it.

I don't think it's essential to play S;G if you've seen the anime, since it's a very good adaptation and covers the story from start to finish. But the VN is of course much more detailed and has things in it that the anime doesn't. If you liked the characters and ambience, that's already reason enough to play through the VN.

I did a blind playthrough first and then used a flowchart to go through all the routes except Mayuri's (which I'll probably do this summer). Playing without a flowchart is pointless because there's realistically no way you can figure out the flags, and it's a waste of time anyway.

The alternate endings aren't any reason to play if you ask me. Ruka's and Faris' are ho-hum, and Suzuha's is downright embarrasing in its shittiness and comes across like it was written by an intern. There's also an optional detour related to Nae that's pretty embarrasing too. You could go straight to the true ending and not miss anything (maybe Mayuri's ending, but I doubt it).

>Steins;Gate
The VN has 3 new fun endings and half a dozen new scenes over the anime, most of them being in the 5-15 minutes range. Do they warrant a new reading? You'll be the one to tell me. I don't think they warrant a new reading personally, but if you are truly a fan, you'll want those new scenes and endings.

>Higurashi
The VN is 1200% better than the anime and is a must read.

Well to be more clear, the conclusion itself is not bad, it's just that some of the other scenes seem like they were written by someone with a questionable grasp of the story and characters.

You're probably talking about Okabe's rape thoughts. It was implied he passed several years into the closed loop. His rape thoughts were a sign of his profound moral degeneration. On the contrary, it really shows how Okabe is breaking more and more, and stopped caring. It is horrifying.

The conclusion is precisely good because it is a sliver of hope after Okabe being thrown into the depth of despair. The emotional punch of this ending took me by surprise.

Same with Ruka's ending, by the way. I went expecting shit, it was surprisingly decent and sweet. Faris' ending was a total disappointment unfortunately.

It was just laughably out of character and edgy, and as far as I remember there was no reasonable explanation for Okabe looping the same events over and over again.

>> No.14990225

>>14990210
Also: Okabe is unlikely to be stupid enough to think he could stand a chance against Suzuha, and if he fails he'll probably not be able to reset again. There would be easier targets for his edginess.

>> No.14990259

>>14990210
The fact that it is out of character is a plot point. After an untold amount of time passed at reliving the same two days, he was breaking. Of course, they could have said 'Okabe is breaking' or 'Okabe is feeling empty inside', but the sheer otherness of him thinking about raping Suzuha provokes a very, very powerful emotional response. Okabe spent years reliving the same two days. He is dying inside, so much that he actually thinks about raping Suzuha. Powerful stuff.

And it is not out of character in this particular situation. Even though he has some quirks, Okabe is a strangely normal teenager, all things considered. Put a teenager full of hormones in the exact same situation, check how much time it takes before he thinks of using it for sex.

>no reasonable explanation for Okabe looping the same events over and over again.

This ending is what happens if you choose to loop the same events over and over again instead of erasing the last days of Suzuha from the timeline. The reasonable explanation is implied in the choice that was given to you. You can choose to erase the last days of Suzuha, you didn't, so Okabe needs to find another solution. There is none. He loops. Things go badly.

I can't believe you're trying to defend this. I like the VN too but shit is shit and I'm not going to pretend otherwise. And it's just an alternate ending anyway.

>This ending is what happens if you choose to loop the same events over and over again instead of erasing the last days of Suzuha from the timeline.
That's not an in-universe explanation for his actions.

Just because a title was influential doesn't mean it's essential to play. Most of the ones you recommended were good for their time/very influential but many did not age so well. Your list is definitively not something I'd call "essential", but rather a "I want to understand the medium better" list. I'd recommend To Heart though, it's pretty heartwarming.
