People are exaggerating koya problems. It was obvious from trial that its not going to be "storyge", so I went with expectations of light comedy game about making eroge, and got exactly what I wanted.
All scenes were funny and interesting and personally I like lack of drama. There was no overarching story but this kind of game doesn't need it.
Overall, its solid 78-80 out of 100 for me.

Because I did and I can tell you it's kind of annoying paying 10000k yens for something that took me about 12 hours to finish

It's definitely very well written and almost constantly funny but Takahiro hyped it in such a way you definitely expected more than that
And the fact that they made an anime, released before the game, for such a short title is the strangest thing ever, the routes are short so it's not like there is that much actual content after the common route that was fully animated

But yeah like you said, all the scenes are funny and interesting and the lack of drama may be a plus based on how you see it

I gotta ask. Why should a high price reflect a lot of content? For context, I have played a LOT of games with a ton of content, ad the vast vast majority of the time they managed to last so many hours by meaningless padding and slowing the whole game down. For 10k yens, I would take a well written 12 hour game, over a bloated mess of a 36 hour game. Of course, that seems to be a "false dichotomy", right? In truth, you want a 36 well written game for 10k yens. However, the reason why I'm ignoring that option, is because a lot of long games are bloated shit, but they never get called out for it from what I've seen. It's a lot of text so it's worth the money! Though the text itself is bad.

In short, I think a good short game is worth as much money as a long bloaty game. For me. I'd sooner pay 10k yen for Kouya, then for yet another 10k character game -type deal with infinite padding.

Yeah, after writing that post (I just woke up) and reading reviews for the game and such, I can see that. The guy said "It's definitely very well written and almost constantly funny" so I was envisioning a better game than Kouya actually seems to be. Never the less, I still don't see expecting content for money, over quality for money, to be a particularly good mindset. Best example I can give is the difference between Gun Knight Girl and Nanairo/Akeiro - in one, the author was told to pad (or otherwise chose to pad) and the result is boring mess of a narrative (with enough quality shining through the padding to keep you going), in the others he wasn't, and the result is a tight and thoroughly entertaining narrative. I'd pay more money for the latter two and gladly accept the shorter length.

In the end customer satisfaction is a very personal thing and playtime is only one of the factors in it. Also consider that actual play time varies.

In the case of Shokomeza it's not the fact that it's short, but it was falsely advertised (the anime is only the prologue! The real thing starts in the adult life chapter of the game! -> Sorry there's no second chapter, just 1-2 hour character routes, the anime already spoiled 80% of the game content) and 10~15 hour playtime is still pretty lousy for that much money. I don't think the newest Bishoman game is much shorter and it sold for 3000 yen for Chrissakes.

However there's two things you said that I find fault in.

Like I said, I would find a 10~15 playtime to be perfectly fine for that much money, if it were actually a thoroughly good game. While that's not the case here, it seems, I still think this attitude is poor, from my own perspective, as you said customer satisfaction is personal and if other people are only satisfied by gargantuan padding I won't tell them to change their attitude.

The experience provided by an all-ages narrative game is entirely different from what is provided by a blase nukige. You can get good porn with a facile story pretty much anywhere, so the game is rightly priced competitively. Whereas, a good 10-15 hours story (no porn, not that porn is a detriment but rather that porn often constitutes a significant chunk of CG resources) with quality writing and a quality story is remarkably hard to find, and thus even with a higher price would be competitive, I think.

Its not really about the money, its all about how they lied while advertising the game. Most of people bought this for that "adult life" part with expectations, while all they got is the anime scenes with very few additions.

In short mediocre game + a bunch of fake advertisements + being short + being all ages. It almost have all reasons for making customers mad.

I understand and agree with your "a good short game is worth as much money as a long bloaty game" opinion though, its just that kouya isn't that "good short game".

I think if the game were to be judged in a vacuum without all the drama and controversy surrounding it, it'd be considered a fairly decent game. Are storiges fucked? As I'm reading more storiges, I notice more and more simularities between them. Common plot twist, common plot point, common hero(ine) background, common setting, etc. It's like writers are running out of ideas. Muramasa is like the only one which i haven't found simular to others in some regard.

Not that guy, but I got into eroge comparatively recently and have been utterly spoiled in terms of art and production values.

How do I undo my shit tastes and become able to read early 2000s stuff like this? I'm sure the stories and the characters are all fantastic but I look at screenshots and the old hype boner deflates like a sad, flaccid balloon.

I want to like it but those faces, man. Note that I'm aware some of those are a lot more recent than others and some have excellent art, I'm simply more used to 2010ish artstyles and grafix.

How about One 輝く季節へ? The art is pretty much shit, but main character is so hilarious that you actually ignore the art and just enjoy him. Its also pretty deep, but for being able to understand it you have to play it japanese, this is why most of eops could understand it.

I use it for stuff that have lots words regarding something specific like medical terms in Saya no uta or chuuni stuff that I havent seen as well as for eroge that keeps showing me words I haven;t seen.

Still if you are starting off try some shounen manga or easy stuff like moege till you can get at a comfortable pace.

VNDB's time data doesn't mean much and a difference of even 5-10 hours is really significant.
Furthermore, individual reading speeds even for natives differ by a good number of hours.
Furthermore, no one records how long they read.
In short, the more you read the closer you'll get to not needing a text hooker. It will come with time. Don't worry about any concrete number of VNs, because you won't find a meaningful one.

Set in Hinomoto (日ノ本), a fictional version of Japan (日本), where for a long time railway travel served as the most important form of transport. Each locomotive was paired with a humanoid control module, so-called RailRoad, that aided the train operator. However, many rail lines had been discontinued due to the rising popularity of ‘aerocrafts’, a safe and convenient aerial mode of transport. As such, their accompanying railroads also went into a deep sleep.

Soutetsu had lost his entire family in a rail accident and was adopted into the Migita household, which runs a shochu brewery in the city of Ohitoyo. He returned to his hometown to save it from the potential water pollution that would occur if they accepted the proposal to build an aerocraft factory nearby. He woke up the railroad Hachiroku by accident and became her owner. For different purposes, they agreed to help find her lost locomotive, with the help of his stepsister Hibiki, the town’s mayor and local railway chief, Paulette and others.

I imagine this will be extremely niche, but I may as well post it anyway. I recently watched the movie Equibilrium, and since I found it pretty good thought I'd go ahead and read Urobuchi Gen's VN fanfiction adaptation of it, Jouka no Monshou / 浄化の紋章. However, I really struggled to find a Japanese download, I'm sure it's out there but I couldn't find it when I searched. I did find many versions of the English game available for download, however, so I hacked the script to the best of my ability (Thankfully, the Japanese text was preserved as comments) and got the game producing in Japanese. This wasn't difficult, but it was quite the hassle, plus I had to find a font to work with it, so all in all I thought I'd upload the Japanese Patch for the English Version of a Japanese Game here for anyone who also wants to read the game. Just drag into the main game directory, back up the original files just in case.

I would say Equilibrium is a pretty fun movie, subtle as a high velocity concrete slab and pretty slow at times but I really enjoyed it. From what I've read of this fanfiction it's pretty good too (written by urobutcher after all) and in fact *improves* the movie by elaborating on the art of Gun-Kata which the movie did not go too in depth on. It's listed as having 713 lines total which is remarkably short so for me it's a good way to kill some time, maybe somebody else will want to try it out too.

I'm gonna feel like I real idiot if the Japanese version is really easy to find. Well, even if it is maybe some more people will be interested in reading this.

I fucked something up.

First I was playing the game normally, then decided to switch to full screen temporarily by hitting the maximize window button. Bad idea. The screen went completely blank (you could still hear the game) and I had to quit.

Then I started the game again and it started in windowed mode, but the window was blacked out and you could only hear the game. I went to fullscreen mode and the game was finally visible, but I wanted to go back to windowed so I choose the windowed setting in the settings menu.

However, after that, the display in the windowed setting is fucked. As in the screenshot, the UI stretches vertically more than it should and the bottom of the UI is not visible at all. What's more, every time I open the game it's completely blank again and I have to go to fullscreen mode and back again to see anything in windowed mode.

I tried removing the system save data (I backed it up of course) and I even uninstalled and reinstalled the game, and I still get this error. This is also the only game where I have this error, all my other VNs run just fine. How do I fix my windowed mode?

Just a warning, there are a couple instances of script stuff like bgm titles leaking into the main game, there was one case where the game crashed but I avoided it by holding CTRL over the moment it crashed, and at the very end (last 50 lines maybe) the text turned to black and was impossible to read except in the backlog. All of these can be easily fixed by looking at the original script files (I presume anyway, no idea why the text turned black) and are a minor part overall of a small game so I wouldn't worry too much about it. Enjoy, it was really cool, I had a lot of fun with it. Reminded me of Rakuen no Shugosha, down to the heavy use of CGs and tone of the 1v1 duel.

I get it that people are mad about false advertising and price, but still, after competing the game, I think its unfair to call koya itself bad because of that.

Just finished it myself and I'm definitely satisfied with it. It managed to maintain same level as trial all the way till the end and was entertaining for me, and thats all what matters.
I certainly wouldn't mind to read more of such stuff, probably even with more of these Random 3rd Party Scenes and even less drama, its the rare kind of comedy I can actually enjoy (unlike these rage-inducing Asa Project games).

Basically the trial had the first 15 min of common route + last 10 min of common route + 2 h-scenes from routes. Which made you think it as a "classic moege school life" while actually its a borderline nukige where two of heroines are succubus, and there are 5 h-scenes at the common route (40 at total).

Well, pretty much finished with オモカゲ after a binge read. For a vanilla game, the porn is really really good, the ahegaos are on point and the art is consistently high quality. Definitely a stand out game as much as I hate to admit it - in terms of porn anyway. As far as plain writing goes, its the kind of game that makes a helluva lot of jokes but not a single one is even mildly funny or witty. I did smile at Hinami's antics though given how cute her expressions were. In short, if you think the girls are cute and you are in the mood to fap, this is great. Though holy crap the protagonist is boring, and subsequently the majority of what happens is boring.

I didn't really find the "特殊なエロ", "思影特有のシチュエーション" to be that erotic. Patting a girls back, head, etc to make her cum did not turn me on in the slightest, nor did witnessing senpai stroking her arm to cum give me even a half chub. Therefore, the amount of normal sex didn't bother me at all. I say normal and not vanilla because the possession-induced lust is kind of outside vanilla I think, in one scene the megane is possessed and starts masturbating in the middle of library all the while moaning about how she's the 委員長 and this is too lewd why is she doing this what if someone sees etc etc. Overall, good porn, 特殊 or not.

Personally I enjoyed a lot more VNs when I was first starting out despite more lookups because I wasn't as used to the tropes. It went slower but it made up for it by being fresher.

Whenever I read a moe-ish game like pic related it's really tempting to just skipp all the intermediately content and go straight to the deitoing romance and lewd but over time I've really come to recognize that in doing so games blur together and its really hard to distinguish them, because it tends to be that all of a game's elements work together to form a unique whole, so naturally ignoring some will hurt the entire work.

For that reason I wouldn't skip the train stuff in Maitetsu no matter how good the lolis were and how little I cared about trains. In the end it's a very important part of the whole. Though if my goal were to just fap to lolis then the whole would cease to matter I guess. But by this point there's so much porn out there, that I don't think it's wise to skip to the porn like that, I guess? There's plenty of great porn out there not contained within VNs, so if I were to not care about the plot, setting, writing, anything of a VN I'd just go for porn in other forms, even the CG set of the same VN.

Anybody feeel eroge nowadays lacks a lot of quality
sure it looks nice and all but it just seems rushed and re uses assets.

Sure it doesn't apply to every eroge but after trying an older eroge "Loverable" it seems way more funnier, doesn't need dick jokes and jokes that rely on comic relief being hurt to keep things funny.

Other things like rooms being re used for sakura no uta kinda show the lack of new assets.

Maybe its just me getting older out of it or I just kinda preffer 2000's 90's anime but the new kinda of humour and shennigans doesn't really appeal as much.

To clarify, I meant that it's best that discussion isn't filled with accusations of machine translation, rather than I hope that the thread doesn't become filled with machine translators. Reason being, if machine translators were going to dominate the thread it would have already happened, given their enormous presence on /hgg/ and other parts of the web. Therefore, I don't really fear MTers coming in now of all times. Plus there are enough posters with bad Japanese (be it Chinese or Korean folk relying on kanji knowledge to push through or just people in the earlyish stages of language learning) that machine translators wouldn't really lower the quality of discussion all that much.
