I am going to learn a foreign language because I hear it prevents your mind from deteriorating at an old age. I figure Japan would serve me the best, considering I may actually use it sometime in my life. What is the best way about learning the language?

Picture probably not related.

I'd prefer not to take classes, but are they really that important? If it is really the best way to learn, I'd probably be willing to go for it, but I'd rather not have to deal with the large costs and looking like a loser. Plus I'm already a full time student and working about 40 hours a week, so I'd rather try and find something that I could pick up and learn whenever I have the chance.

If class makes that large of a difference in the learning procedure though, I'd probably be willing to make the time somehow.

Ever since I was young I have loathed the Spanish language.

I thought about French, but I already know quite a bit of it from taking four years in High School and would rather focus on something new and exciting. I thought about Russian but it seemed kind of useless.

If you want to progress in life, you sometimes have to discard your pride and look like a loser in front of people. If you didn't give a damn about people's opinions, you probably wouldn't be so much of a loser.

Classes are poo. I know because I am currently doing Japanese at uni.

This is one method that I'm using at the moment, so far it's worked a lot better than classes.

Start out by teaching yourself hiragana/katakana. Also, if you enjoy anime, it really is a good way to learn vocabulary over time if you pay attention. Going to classes really is the best way though, even my gaijin high school sensei taught me more than I ever thought possible.

It all depends on the teacher, really. It will either be a complete waste or the easiest way possible to learn.

Just say the native Japanese phrase "ORE WA NIPPON" 100 times in front of a mirror to yourself for at least 2 years and you'll sooner or later turn Japanese, guaranteed.
Worked for 2 of my best friends so far, true story.

It's actually quite good. There are probably better programs for PC out there, but it has to be worth something considering it took me 3 days to learn all hiragana, some simple phrases, numbers up to 100, some colors, weekdays and months with it.

not very hard in japanese. you just need to know 1-10, 100 and some basic math.

I agree completely.
But I fucking hated my Japanese class.
