My standards are high but I'm pretty good looking. If I can't get my ideal girlfriend I'd rather not have one at all and avoid the hassle of wasting my time and money on a woman that I don't like just to fill my basic physiological needs. There was an article in the times many years ago and from what I remember it's title was something like 'Looks matter more as money and education become less important', and it was about how as women had more financial security of their own they were increasingly treating looks as their primary factor in choosing a mate as opposed to say... a male's job security and financial situation and so on. This led to the prevelance of what is called 'slumming it', with intelligent career women sleeping with more 'working class' type males because they feel they are 'more masculine' and so on.

I remember reading an interesting commentary on it in a blog somewhere where the guy mentioned all these systems set up by a supposed 'patrariarchal' system actually ensured fairer marriage proposals than in a 'liberalized' system and everyone was actually a lot happier.

Really interesting to read.

Also, the article itself mentioned also how the prevalance of this 'inter-class' dating was more 'inter-intelligence' in many ways, with the woman assuming the role of breadwinner while the guy maintains the tough guy yet stay-at-home image.
