"The Discovery Channel series MythBusters investigated Chinese water torture in the season 3 episode "Brown Note, Water Torture", and found that dripping water on the forehead, by itself, was not particularly stressful. Immobilizing the subject along with a variable water drop schedule proved the most stressful of the methods they tried, and cold water intensified the effect (the myth was confirmed).

The basic thing is that the restriction itself is the torture. Anything added to it, no matter what it is, would elevate the torture.

It could be some guy randomly walking up and yelling in your ear while you're bound to the chair, and it would elevate the torture.

The water drip itself could be replaced by any conceivable negative stimuli and still accomplish the same result. That's why it's "busted."
