The Interesting thing is, the artist style is heavily influenced by Megami Tensei. Also he seems want to make his own Megaten game, judging by the artwork on his site. It's full of monster compedium just like Megaten however with different style.

why, not all youkai are flesh eaters, hell i'm sure most of the youkai in gensokyo aren't flesh eaters. If Youkai are predominantly supported by belief then why would you want to eat the people that are scared shitless of you, it just don't make sense for survival in the long run

Maybe/There exists the possibility (Meiling [makes reference to eating human, could just be fight banter though], Koakuma, Patchouli, Letty, Yuyuko, Yuuka, Nitori, Suwako [as ritual sacrifice, maybe, who knows how those ancient worshipping practices went down], Parsee, Satori Komeiji/Koishi Komeiji [depending which version of the satori legend, one attacks and eats other is relatively harmless], Nazrin, Murasa, Sekibanki, Kagerou, Clownpiece [low level Hell minion, could be like Rin/Utsuho, dealing with dead bodies and such all day and had a bite], Kasen [follower of Ibuki/Shuten douji, like Yuugi, may have terrorized humans at some point, though she's more sympathetic])

Ran and Chen are most definitely not flesh eaters. Ran is your basic Kitsune not the flesh eater variety, and Chen is a Necotama and as far as I can tell those don't eat flesh, hostile yes but not ravouness. Then you have Yukari who doesn't even have a youkai analog so she could be anything.

I always thought that Yukari was a mokumokuren (clusters of eyes that stare from tears/cracks in paper/rock walls) that got really old and really powerful.

Kind of like how Yuuka has a plain power but is really adept with it while Rumia has a scary-sounding power but can't do much and even gives herself away because of it.

Youkais are shaped by belief.

If the people in the village believe of a aquatic monster that rip your soul out of your ass for funsies then a aquatic monster that rip your soul from your ass for funsies will appear.

As for the second question: that's why, sometimes, outsiders are "imported" for their meat/soul/whatever

The village is more or less a cow farm/chicken coop that produces milk/eggs.

It's not like they eat everyone. They have to eat people every once in a while to reinforce that belief, otherwise after a few generations they'll stop believing.

There's also an existential argument. That is, if the underpinning of your existence is a congruence with the widespread belief that you're "a monster that eats people", then if you don't in fact eat people it would undermine your existence. You're no longer a "monster that eats people", so you would cease to exist.

There exists a youkai called waremehime, she sleeps in cracks in rocks or walls, and lures human prey with a voice, and then snatches them inside to devour. This is probably what Yukari is based on.

really? canon holds that suwako was a curse goddess, and kanako is snake themed.
curse-themed deities aren't known for their gentle nature and eating lesser beings is actually thematic for a snake.

i mean it's not exactly a confirmed thing, but i highly doubt either of them would have any issue whatsoever with eating a human.
