Review: The opener may give the impression of this being yet another harem series or ero game adaptation, but this series may instead qualify as the new season's weirdest entry. Based on a visual novel released earlier this year in Japan, the Chaos;HEAd anime carries over the visual novel's heavy emphasis on psychology and delusions while introducing a bevy of pretty girls. One is a younger sister, another a clumsy otaku girl who may be stalking the hero but seems to have the same anime passion, a third is an apparent murderer, a fourth is an anime character manifesting out of the hero's delusions, and the fifth's roles is unclear at this point.

Oh, yes, did I mention the murderer? Some really bizarre killings have been going down in Shibuya, but they barely register on otaku Takumi's game and anime-soaked consciousness until he gets sent a picture of one and then actually witnesses it seemingly being committed by a blood-soaked pink-haired girl, one who, disconcertingly, later appears in his class. He has enough trouble distinguishing reality from his own delusions without that, as he believes a sexy anime character hangs around with him in his odd domicile and imagines both vicious attacks on him and that he's being watched. He's such a loser that he prefers anime girls to “three-dimensional” ones and when one who shares his interests does approach him, he's reluctant to believe it since he sees it as an improbable ero game scenario. All indications are that he's about to descend into something even stranger. . . if it's all real, that is, since it could all just be one of his paranoid delusions.

Review: On the plus side, it's pretty. The show's vibrant use of lighting and color is an textbook example of what Japanese anime these days can do right when the studios are trying. On the negative side, however, is the sorry fact that not even attractive visuals will save viewers of the first episode of ef ~A Tale of Melodies~ from stultifying boredom. The talking heads and surreal atmosphere are supposed to be profound in their obscurity, but they are actually just obscure.

This season, which appears to be adapting the original ef game's fourth chapter, begins by jumping back and forth a bit between the school years and adulthood of one of its frame narrators, Yuu Himura. But by about halfway through, it settles into the burgeoning relationship between professional violinist Shuichi Kuze and schoolgirl Mizuki Hayama. The enormous age difference adds a special tension, as does some rather inappropriate conversation, but it does not go anywhere in particular, at least for now. The only nudity in question—tasteful, of course, in keeping with the show's risible high-minded attitude—comes earlier.

Some people need a bit of story to help assuage their guilt about the porn, which is all fine and good. But when that bit of story becomes the raison d'entre in its own right, assuming monumental, monstrous proportions, something has gone very wrong. The ero genre has lost its way; it's ridiculous. So would it be too much to ask for the creators of ef ~A Tale of Melodies~ and others of its ilk to get found and hurry up with the sex in subsequent episodes? If not, well, a least it will be good for chronic insomniacs; a few nights of this on their screen will definitely cure them.

>The apocalyptic prologue and the intense bloodiness of one scene suggests a generally dark and twisted tale sprinkled with light-hearted moments, one which gives off something of a When They Cry vibe. (And watch for some subtleties, too, such as how the frog clips briefly visible on Yua's bag when she meets Takumi in front of the school suspiciously match the ones on the bag Takumi saw in the Internet parlor.) Madhouse backs it up with respectable visuals and an eerie, highly effective musical score. It is not, in any case, standard fare, but a couple more episodes will be required to see if this series will truly establish itself in a fresh and interesting direction.

The adaption is garbage. Madhouse kills any feeling of suspense, horror, or the taste of Takumi's lonely existence. Animation is QUALITY. Of course the blogs will like it because there are MURDERS and HALLUCINATIONS, making the pos automatically relevent, piognant, dramatic and a modern classic of storytelling.

Review: It seems exceedingly difficult to justify the existence of a bishoujo anime series like Clannad that, while long on big-eyed, big-busted heroines, is woefully short on the fanservice. So one has even more trouble imagining how Japan justifies a second season of this lugubrious collection of ladies…but there you have it.

it is a good anime... i watched it the night it came out in japanese regardless of the fact that i dont really know japanese but yet i could translate it somehow... not really sure how but i did... truthfully its kinda off from the game but other than that its not bad at all.
