Well, I don't like the protagonist either.
He's supposed to be an asshole who likes to sav drunk people once in a while. He's a retired manwhore, so he hates the vagina. But he's living with a shitload of girls, and doesn't even seems to have a male friend to drink with once in a while.
This character looks so forced.

Wait until he he ends up starting to lose everything, and he begins to feel the ronery. Then the facade melts away, and his heart grows four sizes as he realizes that the people in his life meant a lot more to him than passing the boredom and free meals.
After all he is a decent example of a male character with interesting traits. He's a masculine mix of tsundere, kuudere, and Kyon-esque sarcasm and bruntness. He's the jaded hard-hearted abandoned kid who doesn't believe true love can exist. But love changes everything.

Mikan's previous master died in a car accident. She ran away from home trying to find her, and that is how she is found in the rain in the trash. That is when Yuuichi takes her in.
Yuuichi eventually takes her to the graveyard to see her master and help her move on. That ends the "prologue."
Way way later in the plot Mikan is dognapped because she is highly functioning and a rare breed. This loss throws the main character's life for a loop and is what triggers his realization of how much the people around him matter and growth as a human being. He becomes painfully frustrated that the world is so unconcerned about a single dog, he struggles with how his old jaded cynicism towards life which would've stopped him from ever caring in the first place, but now he is in too deep and is too attached. Months go by, the pain barely fading. Finally one day Mikan finds her way back from halfway across the country, she made it on foot after escaping from her dognappers, following smells and her sense of direction. Along the way she becomes so tattered that humans avoided her thinking she was a rabid stray, she begins evading humans out of fear. But she finally makes it home in one epic "Homeward Bound" moment before collapsing in her master's arms. Mikan is in very bad shape, mentally and physically, but with the love of a stable and tightly knit family (Yuuichi, Risa, Silvie and herself) she recovers and Yuuichi comes to treasure every moment of his life with his wife Risa and two pets. That's Risa's route.
