Japan is actually very different from what is portrayed in anime.
Most anime set in "real", modern day Japan is told from the perspective of high schoolers or younger. Once you become an adult in Japan, your world is flipped inside out. The shock from going through the last year of high school and then university or entering the workforce sometimes even causes people crippling social anxiety that leads to them becoming total shut-ins (hikkikomori). Basically a shitload of expectations and responsibility are dropped on you. There's also pressure to do well academically, but it's not comparable. Not working carries a big amount of shame with it, sometimes the stigma is so bad families outright hide the existence of the family member that does not have a job.
