If you're staying it one city, I could see it being fun to travel with someone. However, if you're going to get a rail pass and you have the ability to go anywhere in Japan, you really don't want to have another person that you'd have to coordinate with. I went for a whole month by myself, know very little Japanese, and it was a blast being able to just hop on the train and go wherever I wanted across the country. I don't even want to imagine what it'd be like if I wanted to go somewhere and my friend would be all iffy about it.
