Cool, I came here just in time. Check this out:

SC2VN tells the story of an aspiring professional gamer who has moved to South Korea, the mecca of esports, in attempt to break into the highly competitive scene. The protagonist, Mach, must not only face the challenges of the world’s best StarCraft 2 players, but also the issues that come with leaving everything behind to pursue a dream in an uncertain industry. Players will have the opportunity to interact with various progamers, team managers, and fans as they attempt to build themselves into the best StarCraft 2 professional player in the world.

I'm aware. But MangaGamer doesn't target Japan as market, right? You could make the same argument in Russia, games hardly cost more than $10 over there, but publishers don't see that as a reason to sell games for $10 in other regions of the world.

>> No.14055135

>>14055101
You want niche products, you pay niche prices. There's not enough of a customer base to be able to make up for obscenely low prices with volume. And anyway, it's not like $50 is expensive for a video game.

That's comparing apples and oranges. I'm not sure if you have any idea how much money flows into the development of your average game, and in turn, how many hours of gameplay they offer. VNs cannot compare in any way, so naturally, I'm expecting to pay less money for less value.

>> No.14055150

Average full-price VN lasts around 25 hours, 40-50 for the longer ones. There are a lot of shitty AAA games with way less content that cost more. And they don't even have porn.

And again, there's not enough of a customer base to make up the development costs if they cut prices further than they already have. It's basic economics, man.

>> No.14055165

>>14055155

That's not what I said, try again. Why waste your time on something you think has so little value compared to a "real" video game?

Also, you do realize that the reason those multi-million dollar AAA games can sell for a mere $50 is because they know they can sell hundreds of thousands of copies. A VN's lucky to sell four digits in English and cost a lot to license and localize, so they're priced accordingly. If AAA games sold like VNs they either wouldn't exist or they'd cost several thousand dollars.

>> No.14055168

How do bundles work? Not him, but I always assumed it was a bad thing for the creators of the game and they only ever do it as a last-ditch thing. So when I buy humble bundles I throw all the money at the site to support what they're doing rather than the developers because I feel like I'm essentially pirating the game anyway. I just own it to say I own it legally because that makes me feel good, or for multiplayer because you can't pirate that.

Basically the bundles model works because most of a title's sales come close to their launch. At some point, you're basically selling 0 copies.

So you take older titles that are making you no money, sell them at a massively reduced price to makes some money, and maybe convince people that have never bought your products to look at your new games with their new game prices.

It's advertising, basically. Advertising that they get paid to make.

Moreso recently than in the past because the only actual progress made on any actual hacking I’ve needed done since, uh… mid 2014… was “I showed up.” The problem, however, is that like DS, it doesn’t run well on modern systems, to put it very mildly. Even gets upset when you try to window it with things like dxwnd, so it’d… be as much of a mess, and people already didn’t care at all about DS to begin with. Not right now though. Not next. Not the one after that. Most likely not the one after that either (although at least two of those are very short). But maybe some day, if for no other reason than to undercut Sky. You are talking about second hand games. You can easily find them at Akiba or Dendentown and yes they are really cheap because the used games market is different in Japan.
I'm not defending MG because i also think that their games are a bit too pricey but you can't compare the price of a second hand copy in Japan and a brand new one sold by a english localization company.

With regards to the price of visual novels, it really depends on the demographic of your market. Let's start with the novel/reader audience, with the assumption that visual novels target 'readers.'

In the modern market books are considered to be expensive. It may not seem so, but they are. Comparatively speaking, that is. The price of mass market paperbacks have exploded over 300% in the past few decades, well over the rise of inflation. Not to mention that many older books that need to be back ordered are only available in trade paperback form, which forces the reader to shell out more money because trade paperbacks are a more expensive format of book (I prefer them though.) This is one of the reasons attributed to the decline in the number of people purchasing books, buying a mass paperback book in the 60s cost less than a dollar.

Now, if VNs are targeted at the reader market, and readers view 10-20 US dollars for a 400k word book to be expensive, it really doesn't take much logic to deduce that VNs priced in the 30-40 dollar mark is out of their price range, let alone those priced at 50 dollars and above. You could buy an entire TV series for that money, or a game.

And mentioning 'games' (like my segue? :3) let's examine how gamers would view VNs. For gamers, 35 to 40 dollars is a hell of a lot of money to pay for a game with no gameplay. Where's the 'game' part of it, they'd wonder. Which is exactly what gamers criticise Telltales games for (games which are sold cheaper than a lot of MG's VNs btw.)

So VNs have a problem with both gamers and readers would pass by VNs for different reasons, which is probably one of the reasons why Cho Dengeki Stryker, and Princess Evangile, have only moved a few thousand on Steam, as opposed to their cheaper brethren who have moved many times that amount. You may see an increase in episodic content in the future for this reason *shrugs*.

I don't get the point of an anonymous forum, usually if people didn't want others to know who was at the end of an account, they'd make a disposable one. But all these anons make it confusing, and hard to have an argument, because you don't have any idea if it's one person or 50 you're talking with. I put my name there so you know who said what, so if you think I'm an idiot or you disagree, you'd know who you were addressing when you make your inevitable loud, and vehement comment.

If I were seeking to build a reputation, I think it wouldn't be by posting on an anonymous internet forum, or any forum actually. If I wanted an internet reputation I'd go about it the normal way - by using eggs, toilet rolls, bricks, a video camera, and a Youtube account.

Well, I’m an RPG fan first and foremost with a passing interest in visual novels (mainly because not much of interest to me gets translated.) And if you’re an oldschool RPG fan, there’s only a few places on the internet to hang out. RPGCodex tends to be one of the main places, which is essentially 4chan for old-school RPGers. It’s hated for many of the same reasons that 4chan is hated, and would be even more hated if the hidden forums were available to view by everyone, instead of being only viewable for those signed up for longer than a year.

So I’m familiar with 4chan and 4chan style communities, sort of, but I mainly lurk and don’t really participate. I’m aware that there’s some really good stuff on 4chan, but it’s mixed with a lot of not good stuff. I’m really only interested in the conversations of substance, which can be really quite good, and I have to skim past the moments of nonsense, which unfortunately can go on for a long time :(. I can’t remember much of substance in the last 3 visual novel threads on /vg/ for example.

I’m a moody guy, so sometimes I feel like hanging around a more pub-like atmosphere, like 4chan style communities, and sometimes I’ll stick to more sterile communities, like Reddit. It really depends on what mood I’m in. I’m not actually very active in the VN community, I pop in every now and then but I’m much more active on certain RPG and sport forums. Only I use a different name :P

The information about anonymity is appreciated. I think I'll keep using my username because it's what I'm used to, and I'm a creature of routine. I don't like it when my routines get disrupted, and I'm not really active enough in the VN community so it's not like you'll be seeing my name often :P

For what it's worth, I liked Koichoco despite it not being a "good" game, but I kind of doubt most people are going to get the same kind of enjoyment out of it that I did.

You see, I liked Koichoco because I absolutely loathed Chisato, and seeing her so buttdevastated in the other routes filled me with a sort of perverse glee that I haven't experienced from any other game. I played every route just to make Chisato cry in as many ways as possible.

I, uh... don't think that was the reason I was supposed to like it.

Does anyone else hate how the "Hard Science Fiction" tag on VNDB says "Does this even exist?" for some stupid reason even though it obviously exists because there are games with that tag? I blame Dovac. How the fuck do I edit this out, because it's stupid.

>> No.14061669

Maybe it's like a philosophical question?

Can "hard" science fiction be fiction? Hard science, by definition, is supported by the objective evidence presented by our universe, things that are absolutely real, true, and observable. Fiction by definition cannot be real or true, therefore is hard science fiction not an oxymoron?

Demonbane is far more chuuni than Ayakashibito, which is more of a martial arts flick with fantasy elements than chuuni, really.

It really doesn't matter if the thing has sci-fi or whatever other elements (though the only sci-fi thing about Demonbane is the fact that their magic robots seem to be made of metal), it's chuuni if it's over-the-top power level explosion porn where everyone and their mom have dormant secret super-powers they never realized they had before (but always knew in their hearts they were "special").

A good thing about the genre, is that past Dragon Ball Z like nonsense it also branched to a somewhat philosophical path after a bunch of actually smart writers realized that the idea of wishing your bogus super-powers (that you know are real in your heart) into reality nets one a fantastic stage for exploring some of the more common human cravings and even their corporeal manifestations. And that's how F/SN and Dies Irae were born.

Wait you seriously thought it was just certain scenes?

It's hours of video. Of course the file size is big.

Yes, I thought there was no way a visual novel could have that much animation and assumed it was only for significant cutscenes. I see I was mistaken. Seems like a massive waste for such a brilliant idea to be used on a story like School Days.

The Visual Novel is much better than the anime imo.

So you can tell I watched it, huh? Yeah, I was not happy with it. I probably should give the VN a try though, because it really seems impressive on a technical level. I even already own it, since I bought the JAST bundle (for Osadai). Guess there's nothing to lose.

I've also just read that Shiny Days is more of an actual romance VN and not a "fuck everyone both literally and figuratively" VN so that one might actually be even more up my alley.

Shiny Days is really more about fucking everyone you couldn't in School Days, particularly little sisters and moms.

But isn't jast cutting the little sisters?

They release an unofficial patch, like they do for everything else.

I have yet to play it, but my impression is that it is a walkthrough game where you get options that don't really give any hints at all on how they'll impact the game.

I don't mind it too much in Fate like games where a wrong choice mainly tend to give you a quick death scene. But I don't like the games I've tried that let you play 30 minutes in vain because you made the wrong initial decision.

Personally I suspect that the point of doing it this way is that the bad ends are quite involved and not necessarily wrong choices, in the sense that there's still a story to tell with them.
