I'm a freshmen in college. I checked out the Japan Club during it's first meeting.

The club claimed to "Help you get jobs and connect with Japanese Companies" (I go to a business focused college) "Practice Japanese" "Learn About Japanese Culture".

So I go to the club, and all the officers are not Japanese. But that's fine, they all don't seem that bad. One of them was some white girl who introduced herself in Japanese, which everyone found funny.

We had to do some ice breaker and introduce ourselves. Only around 5 people were actually Japanese. Now, I don't want to be some elitist because I'm half Japanese, but I really expected a Japan club to have more Japanese Americans who could help form a network.

Now, the freshmens at the general meeting was half and half. Most seemed like a general anime type nerd, and some was borderline weaboo mixing in Japanese. Kinda reminds me of those people you see at convention.

So, when they are discussing about that the club is gonna do over the semester, apparently "connecting you with Japanese companies" was Jet. I hope these people understand the stigma they are gonna face in Japan. Anyways, I was pretty fucking disappointed. Can't even apply to JET because I'd have to renounce my Japanese citizenship since I carry dual citizenship.

I was also thinking of taking a Japanese Class since I can speak fluently but I can't write jack shit, but I'm really having my doubts now..

Not knowing Japanese =/= crossie
Please learn what each word means before you use them.

Just use a website called Memrise. They offer a ton of educational courses on learning words and how to read it.

I've been at it for a month or so, about 30 minutes a day, and I can read hira and kata, now working on phrases.

I learned the basic from school in my language class (hiragana, katakana and basic grammar) and watching anime throughout my teenage life
Then i bought some books for jlpt and shit to learn kanji and planning to give it a year or two before taking jlpt level 3or 2.

There was thread about jlpt results while back so you may want to check it out too

I self-taught myself Japanese using the Daily Japanese Thread, learned Mandarin in college and went to Taiwan for two semesters, and finally took two semesters of Korean.

I work at Walmart and only use this to read porn.

You're very impressive.

I learned Japanese by watching anime, reading the Dictionaries of Basic Japanese Grammar, and mousing over Japanese lyrics with Rikai-kun.

sounds like you had shitty luck, I am a junior and my college has a Japanese club and then a Japanese language club. Japanese club sucks, but the language club is fun as fuck, it's like I actually have friends now. it's like 50/50 for japs and gaijin who want to speak jap but everyone is really nice and the huge weebs keep their powerlevel to themselves. we even play mahjong which is fun as fuck with real people

There's no Japanese course at my school, but there's one at the school across the street.
Two of my friends from Taiwan that go to my school are taking it there. I wanted to, but I couldn't fit it in my schedule, and I have another source of Humanities credits now anyway.

OBJECTION! Japanese citizens cannot have dual citizenship!

>> No.14049646

>>14049604
If one parent is Japanese and the other is foreign, you can have dual citizenship up to age 25 or so. Then you have to choose one or the other.
