Blossoming otaku here. I've taken a newfound interest in Japanese dating sims. I have a laptop and no experience. Advice/directions? Much appreciation.

I'm bored so here we go. For dating sims, your best bet is learning japanese, and play console titles like Sakura Taisen and Tokimeki Memorial. 99% of translated dating sims are bad, or those awful jokes like hatoful boyfriend. Other interesting titles are Memories Off, Mitsumete Knight, Kita e, and so on. You can also find decent translated dating sims on the PC-98. You will have much more luck finding good, translated VNs, though.
While the existence of dating sims is well known in the west, the language barrier and a good amount of the titles being primarily for consoles makes them much harder to get than something like regular VNs or light novels. I personally never met a single person who was actually into dating sims, just saw a guy who went through a few but he was more interested in plot-based VNs. Hell, there's probably just 2 or 3 guys in the VN general who actually played through them.
