Honestly guys, I think both mangas are equally good. And even the Touhou games have a pretty dark and edgy story most of the time, it just doesn't have the same impact because ZUN's art just cannot convey a menacing expression.

Reimu was ready to go Terminator on some Kappa ass when she thought a human villager got hurt because of one of their war games, and they didn't even actually hurt anyone. If a youkai went and actually killed a villager, there is no way they aren't going to get put down like the dangerous monster they are.

The dude was a youkai, and he killed a villager. The fact that the youkai and the human it killed are one and the same is irrelevant. He broke the rules, so she broke his ass.

Aren't the ones who get spirited away typically the sort of people who go tromping out into the woods to commit suicide, anyway? It's one thing if some dumb bastard happens to wander in through the border by accident, then I would assume she'd have no problem with helping them either get back out or get to the village, but if they've been brought in on the Yakumo Express it's more likely than not that they were specifically chosen because they hit the perfect combination of a high likelihood of trying to kill themselves and a low likelihood of anyone noticing or giving a shit if they did.

Magicians are youkai, but they still have mostly human bodies (and thus minds) compared to most.

More importantly, though, the magicianisication process is well-established, and there are rules established for how it interacts with the afterlife and so on. It's tradition. The jinyou process, on the other hand, is an abuse of the system that flies in the face of tradition and the intended boundary between humans and youkai.
In Japanese belief systems, defying tradition will cause all kinds of horrible things to happen to you and the people around you, even if you're a god (see: Izanami's children being born deformed because she messed up a minor part of her wedding ceremony).
