It is hard to judge when comparing deities. Especially since Junko's mythological origin being rather mundane. Her name contained the word for fox, but I am pretty sure she wasn't a fox in her origin legend.

Sounds like Junko just got a powerup to make her relevant in ZUN universe.

Junko's entire backstory in Chinese legend revolved around wanting her husband dead after being forced to marry him. And this meant pretending to love him while planning the complete destruction of his royal powerbase, then getting him drunk so her lover can kill him, declare himself king, and her as his queen. Sagume strikes me as a cool moonperson, both in how she dresses and how she talks. Twice in her conversation with Sanae she hesitates a really long time before giving an answer, like she's thinking about it very carefully (long enough for Sanae to wonder if she's hard of hearing).
Clownpiece is, well, a clown. She laughs maniacally and doesn't take anything seriously. Very appropriate for a fairy, I suppose.
Junko... I didn't really get a good feel for her, but she seems to be the standard confidently calm last boss. I think she might be a fox with energy tails? I dunno.

She is ironically the inverted version of Daji. Daji became a king's fucktoy by choice and wrecked his kingdom by making him a bad ruler indirectly. Junko was forced to be a ruler's wife and thus deliberately orchestrated his downfall. I think the Junko of Touhou is meant to be a Fox, but it is mostly because that's in her name.

I went and checked out Junko's spellcards in the Extra stage.

It is VERY interesting. For being a co-last boss, her spell cars are DEAD simple. No complicated useless patterns. Every single bullet on screen is designed to kill you, unlike many other spell cards where many bullets are just there to be pretty.
One of her cards is "Simple danmaku for hunting kangaroos", which is just her shooting a straight, extremely fast single stream of bullets at you.
Then there is the "Straightforward danmaku designed to murder people." which is just a simple expanding ring of bullets that are so packed together, the only way to thread through it is to run to the extreme left or right corner.

Junko's spellcards don't LOOK hard. But that's because it just isn't complicated. It is dead hard, because just because you know what you need to do to survive doesn't mean you would survive.

Junko doesn't seem powerful. She doesn't spew out that many bullets compared to past bosses. But she is straightforward in her murderous intent. The bitch is evil and she wants you dead. No flashy special effects.

This is compared to Hecate, who start throwing three Moons at you like they are wrecking balls...

You can tell that she is a SMART antagonist, who compensates for her lack of power with cleverness and to hit you where it hurts. Sort of like Batman. I can almost rather believe she is entirely human and that she just knows to use danmaku efficiently. Let's face it, 99% of bullets in a Touhou danmaku doesn't do anything at all. But when Junko is on screen all her bullets count.

Well I just finished.

I dunno, game was nice but it seemed like the first four stages were the strong point.

The first four stages made me feel like I was fighting lunarians, and the fifth stage was excellent. I love Clownpeice, but she felt really out of place. If you think back to IN Eintei had this really distinct feel that just felt like it was missing from this game. Junko had a cool survival card, but every card just felt like LASERS AND BULLETS instead of putting together any cohesive theme.

Even still though, all of Okuu's spellcards had that huge siren/warning, and then they all used those bright red balls to signify nuclear energy (or suns).

It felt like I was fighting a nuclear power plant, and the music reflected that.

That all just felt missing from Junko.

Even if we look at 14, Shinmyoumaru had the size gimmick and we definitely felt it in the fight.

There's no English translation but the basic story is that 玄妻's son was killed by Houyi. Houyi then took 玄妻 as a concubine. 玄妻 plotted revenge and got help from another guy, the two of them killed Houyi.

There are two Houyi in Chinese myths. The more famous one is the husband of Chang'e (aka the moon goddess that Zun's talking about), who shot down 9 suns. The other one is a king from the Xia Dynasty, who is the Houyi of the 玄妻/纯狐 story. I guess Zun decided to take some artistic liberties and combine the two stories.

Normal mode took me 4 hours to beat but the game is pretty great; still need to beat extra. Clownpiece's design was questionable at first but it grew on me during the fight, the other characters are also good. Music's great and the patterns are interesting. I don't know how to feel about her design. Clownpiece also has blonde wavy hair, and Junko's doesn't go well with her outfit. Her dress would look better too if Zun used some patterns on it instead of drawing some khokhloma scribbles himself.
Her face is too childish. I know it's hard to convey age with Zun's sameface, but he does differentiate a child, teenager, and slightly older woman somehow. She looks as old as Cirno or Shinmyomaru.

I didn't like the game. Pointdevice mode still sucks. Repeating the same spellcard 50 times is not fun, it quickly becomes annoying and frustrating. I felt absolutely nothing when I beat this game. And I couldn't even save replay at the end.

Stage 4 boss is amazing. She is cute, has good design, has amazing ability. With that ability there are so many possibilities for both H and non-H doujinshis. She's definitely Kogasa of LoLK.
Stage 5 boss s just for memes and stuff. She's a simple fairy, her design is really stupid. But I think she has some potential.
Final and EX bosses are meh.
