I don't see why people think that a game is "weeb" or that they are some super secret cool person for not wanting to share a game with someone. Lots of games are made in Japan, there's nothing wrong, weeaboo, nor secretive about liking a shooting game.

I don't. I tried once back in high school with a borderline shut-in teacher I used to talk about anime with and even he laughed at me. Not a word about the girls or the setting or the fan works. I just explained the mechanics of danmaku and how I liked the challenge and the music and the man who prided himself on owning and regularly watching the entirety of Dragon Ball Z on VHS laughed at me for having weird hobbies.

If somebody is worth conversing with about a subject they will already be familiar with that subject. If they don't already know exactly what you're talking about, don't bother trying.

In fact, all that time spent taking shots could be better spent on a productive hobby, or learning a skill, or consuming media, all of which are ultimately easier to derive pleasure from. All time spent is an investment. Investing in other people is high-risk, high-reward. Investing in yourself is low-risk, but also high-reward.

I think this is really good advice. In the past, I've spent too much time unsuccessfully trying to get people interested in things I like so that they can enjoy them as well. Convincing them to even try the thing is already a pain in the ass unless they are an exceptionally good friend, and then there's the chance that they still won't like it. Sure, sometimes there's the occasional payoff, but in the end it's not worth the hassle when you could be spending that time furthering your own enjoyment.

This hasn't been my experience at all. Random dudes that I met online will try stuff if I ask 'em, so long as the barrier to entry (cost, time, whatever) isn't too high. Obviously you shouldn't go up to random people and try to get them into the stuff that you're really passionate about, but I'm just not seeing this high-risk/high-reward scenario you guys are talking about.

Maintaining friends can be a chore sometimes. LIke, actually having to go outside or respond to their texts when you want to be alone, and trusting them to an extent. Those can get you a job or meet new people and scenes which is rewarding, but the risk comes from wasted time and effort when one thing or another leads you to not want to talk to them anymore.

It's a long-running indie series of those top-down shooter games, made by just one guy in his free time. Instead of being a plane or ship though, in Touhou you are a witch or witch-like girl shooting at fairies, and the bosses are various demon girls. The games have sometimes very kick-ass music but also always have terrible art. For some reason the art spurred on countless thousands of Japanese to try to "fix" the characters by drawing them better in their own image, and this, along with remixing the music, turned out a huge grassroots community in Japan that makes all sorts of neat stuff related to these games.

I can't think of a situation where you'd have to explain what Touhou is to a normie,

I have some friends that's somewhat into nerd stuff and anime(I guess you could call them normies) and I've never been in a situation where I had to explain what Touhou is, if they would see me play it I would just say "It's a bullet hell game".

I noticed that one of my friends listened to "Bad apple" and he thought it was a good song, but was not at all interested in Touhou and my nerdiest friend know what Touhou is, but does not really appreciate it and therefor we do not talk about it.

And I can't see a situation where I'd had a conversation about Touhou with a random person(outside the Internet that is).

I actually think it's somewhat similar to Warhammer, you just don't really talk about it outside the community.
