Windows LITERALLY has no use except for playing games that need high resources. Windows is a bloated, laggy piece of shit with spyware embedded in the system. I have a 2k desktop and Windows incredibly lags in top-notch hardware. GNU/Linux is of course more than smooth because I can actually choose what to load and a light graphical environment. I can run most VNs in WINE including good games like Civ II & III which are the only fucking games I play besides multiple VNs, and if a VN crashes in WINE that's when I boot Windows.

I'm sorry, it was actually this, a VN I dropped some years ago and now I picked up again.

I installed it in a WinXP partition I have for my abandonware, just so it could run better. After installing, it just crashed with the typical "Stopped responding" message randomly, specially when saving, and when switching to full window too. I honestly thought it would neither work in WINE either, but it did. No problems so far, I can actually play it without quicksaving every 10 lines out of fear of it crashing. Normal saves work, full window works too.

Vista really wasn't that bad near the end of its lifetime with all the service packs installed.
I ran it for a while after 7 came out with no problems, everything ran fine.
It doesn't deserve all the hate it gets, most of which stems from the incredibly buggy, unstable and resource-intensive release version.

I always recommend LXDE as it's the lightest DE and made by a cute chinese girl named PCMan.

Though an even better option is foregoing a traditional DE altogether and going with a simple window manager while adding utilities as you see fit. I use the calm window manager (cwm), but they're all fine and come down to how you prefer your windows to be managed.
