Is this the metathread now? Okay.

Honestly, I think "generals" are a flawed concept. It's turning imageboards into subreddits, building constant circlejerking communities. If you have something you want to discuss related to a certain topic, make a thread about it. If there are too many threads about a certain topic, split it off into a new board. There, problem solved. That way we'd have less shitposting, since only people legitimately interested in a certain VN-related topic would even bother to open the thread. It would also increase the abysmal signal-to-noise ratio immensely, encouraging well-written, thought-upon posts, instead of general-style ADHD inferno. Alas, that likely won't happen, because mods are afraid that making new boards (and thus threads) is going to overload the moderation team. That's not the case at all because these extra boards and threads would be smaller and slower, and thus actually easier to moderate than a huge, monolithic general.

Six months ago, Takamura Hitoshi watched Famille, the cafe his deceased brother established, go up in smoke. The employees and the memories they shared might have survived, but without a building there can be no cafe; Hitoshi and co. are left with no choice but to abandon Famille.

But as luck - or perhaps fate - would have it, Hitoshi gets a second chance when he receives a phone call from a new mall asking him to open a branch of Famille inside their building. Hitoshi can't refuse the offer to carry on his brother's will, and after a few twists and turns a new Famille is born with Hitoshi as the manager.

Of course, life never quite goes that smoothly. Things are a mess both in the kitchen and on the floor because two key staff members refused to return. Hitoshi himself had to take a break from college in order to make opening the new cafe a reality. But perhaps the biggest problem of all is staring Famille right in the face - Curio, the popular cafe that Famille was "inspired" by in the first place, happened to open a branch in the same shopping center directly across from Famille...

And thus the new Famille's battle for survival begins.

Well, I'll take a different tack here.

I consider romance stories to be worthless if they do not contain sex or implied sex.

Part of what separates VN romances from anime "romances" is that there is consummation on the relationships. Sex is an irrevocable act that forces relationship progress and answers questions.

In harem shows, you have billions of almost kisses, or kisses that are later said to be a joke, etc-- so there's never any progress. But it's really hard to treat sex the same way.

I don't think a good love story can be told without sex. It just leaves things very vague.

I certainly don't think sex should be removed entirely if there's a good reason to have it, myself. What bothers me is if the sex is still implied but people still dismiss the story just because there wasn't an actual scene for it. Sure, some people like seeing sex scenes, but they don't NEED to see them to know what happened. Especially if, rather than having the scene cut, the game was written without such scenes in the first place but still addresses the matter.

Now that my strike has made contact with him, we have finally proven our connection as adversaries.
"I have hit you! This displays our difference in strength!"

But my enemy is too overcome with agony to give a proper response.
I'll go further, now that my enemy is distracted enough.

"Aaaaaarrghgghgh!!" Seiji aimed a punch at Shirou as he charged on. His fist scattered some of the shadows around him, but it seemed to be devouring him as well, turning him into a shadow fighter instead.

"This is the end." Shirou smiled, and dashed towards him with his sword in front of him

There are some good ones out there, to be sure, but I don't often feel rewarded by them. Just annoyed that I have to slog through this before getting back to the actual good plot, since they apparently put it in out of some sort of obligation rather than because they wanted to write a good h-scene. 1000 touhou threads is quite different from simply keeping a circlejerk alive with no actual topic for discussion due to its timing in the week. This isn't a case of having too many VN threads, it's a case of trying to consolidate it all into one pointless thread 24/7. When the weekly VNTS thread dies, rather than springing up immediately to create a continuation of what was likely a heated shitpost fest, create a thread with a more specific topic if you need to talk about eroge that badly. I wonder if any of Sekai Project's games will ever get bundled. I wouldn't mind owning them, but I wouldn't want to pay Sekai Project for it.

MG's already had handful of their cheaper Steam games bundled so I guess it's really a question of how bundles are decided. I dunno how much control they have over this. I could see a bundle with stuff like Sakura Spirit, Nekopara and even Planetarian doing pretty well though.

I wouldn't have an issue if there were 100000 VN threads. The issue here is that this thread completely kills diversity and tries to discuss everything. It was clearly devised by some /vg/ reject who just refuses to accept that his opinion on generals isn't shared by most of the VN community here in /jp/ (and yes, I do realize that the /vg/ thread was mostly seeded by /jp/ rejects back when that board was created. That doesn't make this "/vg/ on /jp/!" thread any more acceptable).

Instead, you're discussing stupid meta shit about how this thread may be a general and generals are evil. If these kinds of discussions don't even manage to take off inside this thread, how can you expect them to survive as separate threads, instantly disappearing behind layers of generals when people don't respond, and subject to far heavier shitposting than is going on here already (see >>13801170 for an example).

The only thing you need to do to earn "respect" in the scene is getting recognized by the don. Ixrec is like the only respected translator beyond moogy's influence.

They remain rare in works targeted towards a general audience or a male audience.

VNs basically are the "male romance" genre. And it's superior to the "female romance" genre in nearly every way in my opinion, because good ones manage to tell a great story while also developing worthwhile relationships.

Female romance tends to just have a flimsy story as an excuse.
Male romance (when bad) tends to have sex as an excuse (mana transfer, etc).

I think the second case is a much better one.

Also, if they announce Subahibi is now a MG title, I'm going to be pissed. And then buy it.

Because there's huge "anything is good as long as it barely resembles English" crowd. Ixrec released his fanfics very fast, and thats all they need.

No, that's sort of unfair.

Moogy is part of the "japanese is untranslatable" crowd, that believes almost all meaning is lost in any translation.

He challenged Ixrec's translation of a few lines from cross channel once, so I asked for his translation and he gave it.

The result was basically that both were pretty valid translations. I felt they each had their good points.

But I think the random ixrec hating is obnoxious. As is the moogy worshipping.

And no one ever liked Insem. His translations were always mediocre.

MLA was nothing new or innovative, but it had a solid formula and it ran with it. A cliche premise with an incredible execution is still an incredible work. It probably won't make you rethink life or whatever, but it doesn't need to be deep in order to be fun.

I can only speak for myself, but there are two main reasons why I think MLA is great and the sequels less so (though I did enjoy them myself):

1) Nothing really happens in the sequels. Takeru's story, on the other hand, is an epic both in length and scale (in fact, you could easily analyze it using the Monomyth). Think something like Star Wars or Evangelion. This helps entrance the reader and invest him into the story (the fate of humanity is at risk, etc).

2) The characters are great. The one thing VNs are incredibly good at is investing you into the characters, and MLA has plenty of charismatic people to go around. The MC is also great. His struggle is very human, and most people will identify with his angst all too well. Following those characters will keep you entertained and enjoying yourself even when you otherwise wouldn't appreciate the plot. This is something the sequels kind of try to do, but they're so short in length that they can't really succeed.

So yeah, entertaining plot and mesmerizing cast. It sounds simple but that's not so easy to combine.
