I'm not entirely sure myself, but it was my first day in Japan and I didn't even intend to go to Akiba so quickly, but it turned out my hotel was super close (like a 5 minute walk) from mainstreet Akihabara. I had been popping into all sorts of weird places, exploring the district all day and finding neat shops, so I didn't think much off this store-front that was off a regular open street with 2-way traffic (as in not hidden in an alley or down some basement stairs or anything). I have a feeling all the figures and shit in the window are meant to lure in dumb weebs like myself.

Anyway, I opened the door and let it shut behind me. As I walked in, instantly I knew something was off because it had that weird front lobby desk and curtains. The girl at the counter called out and what looked to be a bunch of 15-year-olds walked out from behind the curtain dressed in slutty anime cosplay. A young Madoka with her ass hanging out of her skirt quickly handed me a menu. On it were a bunch of photos like a hand rubbing a foot and a naked dude face-down on a table getting a massage with ludicrous prices bellow each. I was just kinda like "Oh uhh, geeze, uhhh, uhhhhhh..." while looking around the room at all the young girls staring back, waiting for me to say something. Then one looked me straight in the face and said "We are not figure..." I wanted to bail hard and I don't really speak much Japanese so I was just like "S-SUMIMASEN" and stepped out awkwardly fast.

I don't use this phrase a lot, but I've never spilled my spaghetti harder in my entire life.

I rented a bike in one of the larger cities(villages) and then rode it around a lot. Let me see the scenery and the scenery was great, I'm really into that kind of thing. Staying in the actual village would have meant having to like live in some families actual house for a while so I kind of just hopped around day to day in some of the larger areas where I could at least stay in a place that was kind of like a hotel. I didn't take many pictures cause I'm not a picture guy but I'm sure you've seen this pic that one guy took of all the shrine and shit in the actual village. Cool stuff if you like the VN and even if you don't as long as you're not angry about "wasting your time". Of course in terms of actually impressive shrines, things like the huge inari staircase of gates and the huge wooden one with the giant buddha in it were both more impressive obviously.

ok in the rest of the world. address numbers have a logical progression down a street. streets also all have a name or number on them. 1400 Any Street is next to 1402 Any Street and 1401 is on the opposite side of the street.

Your address is also usually just street, city post code and country.

Now in Japan.

Address numbers do not have a logical progression. The number is given out in the order which the property lot was created. So address number 1300 can be next to 50, 600, and across from 1, and 1000. A lot of streets do not have a name or numbers. You have Wards, which are like western neighborhoods. You have to know which ward the place is in.

No one in Japan knows how to get anywhere they haven't been to before. You have to get a map out or use a electronic nav aid. Even the police and mail men couldn't get to a particular addresss with out looking it up. It is common in Japan for strip maps or directions to be on everything.

I was so afraid of looking like a fool in Japan that I thought and continue to teach English in Shanghai instead. Been to Korea, deeper in the mainland, Singapore, and Thailand, but never bothered to step foot in Japan.

I am not worried at all anymore, more because I learned that life goes on, but my spoken Japanese is still too shit for me to get much out of it besides going to Comiket and walking around, which I can do around here for cheaper.

Well, historically, Japan was the only large Asian culture which managed to emerge from the pre-colonial period to their large-scale Industrial Era without at least one large-scale razing and restructuring of cultural practices and institutions, and adopted only the aspects of Western culture which were necessary for a internationally recognizable world power.

While this meant a great deal of stability, economic growth and collaboration with the powers of the day up until WWII, this also meant that systems which many modern states would consider "inefficient" (a pretty subjective claim), or at the very least classical and/or particular to Japan, continue to exist without any absolute necessity of reform. Importantly, Douglas MacArthur, when he lead the US occupation, set a precedent when largely left the industrial and city institutions continue uninterrupted, if neutered temporarily.

At a core example, there is nothing to say that Japan (and China) could not have had alphabets, had things gone differently. Almost all intellectual cultures East Asia primarily employed a form of Chinese Characters until the beginning of the 20th century, from Vietnam to Korea. While Vietnamese and Koreans adopted alphabets, and while China had alphabet movements before the CPC completely snuffed it and instituted the simplified character system, the Japanese largely kept the baggage of their writing system, with some character standardization to the present day. While Chinese characters in Mandarin *can* have different readings for a single character, it is an absolute necessity in modern Japanese, since most characters have a history of being imported from China, adopting to a Japanese and a Chinese pronunciation, and usually adding additional pronunciations throughout the intellectual discourse between Japan and China, with evolving Chinese "standard" pronunciations.

It seems extremely difficult to believe that such a business can exist without there being something from a "hidden menu" of services. I mean, if someone were to walk in with a shitload of cash and asks just for something simple as a handjob, would they actually refuse that? That would be some damn easy money.

On the other side of the coin, such a situation would be perfect bait to arrest the owner of the business for what they consider inappropriote conduct.

It's like how every time you see a girl who isn't black dating a black guy, she's always a 250 pound reject. The best you can hope for is probably a whore, many of which I was offered while walking around shinjuku. So go there I guess.

Japan does have alphabets. They have two of them in fact. They are just syllabic instead of broken down into tiny individual sounds like the western ones.

Hiragana for native words and Katakana for foreign loan words. Though Hiragana is for children to learn. It is generally frowned upon for adults to still be writing in mostly Hiragana. Though because there are like ten thousand Kanji. Even old people sometimes need to look one up.

I don't prefer Japanse culture over Western culture. Its just that Westerners generally think that Western institutions are the best, just as people tend to appreciate the system in which they were raised.

So yeah, I will say its pretty fucking subjective. While I could list examples, because of the inherent subjectivity, you could easily refute any example I have as hating Western culture, as falling to "the grass is greener on the other side," etc.

Actually, that is the first time I've talked about that specific part of the trip on the 4chins. The fact that the image I posted exists tells you at least a few other people have been there and people who don't want to use a taxi or rent a car really don't have much choice in renting a bike in that area if you don't want to spend hours getting to places. So I'm not surprised others have done the same thing.

HOLY FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

I didn't experience this in Akihabara, but I had been looking for specific DVD sets in Japan. That was a huge reason I went there. I was looking for the Maiku Hama TV Series Collection Box. I went into every store with DVDs on their signs and looked around. The store managers and employees were always asking if I needed assistance. I ended up asking them to help me find the Maiku Hama series, that is if they had it in the store. None of the stores were able to help me. So as we were walking back to the train after our day there I saw one more DVD shop. They all waited for me outside.

I walked in like all the other stores. It seemed normal. All the DVDs on racks and on a surrounding pillar in the middle of the store.......then as I got closer I realized these were not regular dvds and this was not a regular DVD shop. My eyes opened wide, I stopped in my tracks, my jaw dropped, I looked around and I couldn't escape them and now I saw every customer in there was a middle aged man in a business suit with brief cases.

I had walked into a JAV DVD shop of the most lewd and filthy things I've ever seen to date.

I turned around to get as far away from the first entrance out to the second so no one would realize I had just been in there.

Before I could leave though a worker, from what appeared to be the owner, shouted out to me "Suimasen! Mate!". I stopped with horror and went to the counter. We talked with my broken Japanese for a minute until he asked one of his workers to come out and speak English with me.

"hello sir! How may we help you today?"
How humiliating. 'This worker thinks I'm a pathetic gaijin who needs dirty movies as he visits Japan. This fake smile is unberable' I thought.
I kept a solem face of no emotion.
I explained to him that I had thought that the store was a DVD store selling Japanese cinema but realized I had taken the wrong turn. Still, they pressed service to me asking
