Knowing Japanese as a non-native speaker has the side benefit of being able to flaunt your acquired skills everywhere you go and it looks extremely nice on your CV.

Anyway, I'm no more obsessed with Japan than someone who isn't American but likes Disney is obsessed with America.

I'm grateful for the entertainment that comes out of Japan which I enjoy. But, I like Western games and nerd things as well. I started with Western nerd things, actually.

I didn't discover otaku things until my mid-20s. In fact I knew nothing at all about Japan until my mid-20s.

Actually you see this in Japan now too ... otaku who began with Japanese nerd culture getting into and supplementing it with Western culture.

Let's all become mutant hybrid nerds! Then maybe if this new breed bites people they will turn into otaku.

My dad was obsessed with Japan, so I developed tastes for Japanese food and manga from an early age. I like Japanese popular culture because it's more explicit about emotions and relationships than other media; I have autism, so Japanese popular culture is easier for me to understand. I also like the grammatical structure of the Japanese language.

I'm not an expert, I'm a beginner studying the language. I've got the kana down, I have a grasp of the grammar, but I don't know many kanji yet.

what I can tell you is that Japanese is very context-based. it doesn't spell everything out like english. the second phrase would probably only make sense in the context of ordering food. there's also many words that have different meanings depending on context.

while reading, I came across an analogy comparing English to a shallow ocean and Japanese to a deep lake. I would agree.

Everybody who was a kid/teenager during the 2000's grew up watching animes on TV (pokemon, digimon, dragonball, Yu-Gi-Oh, Beyblade to name a few).

There was a huge amount of anime/otaku conventions during 2000~2005 so it became popular among all this generation.

Also after that the japanese music (Jpop, J-rock, Visual Kei) became pretty popular over here too, people learned about nicovideo.jp, etc.

But I would say it's getting less popular now as this 2000 generation is getting old, I don't see as many animes being streamed on TVs as it used to be back in the day. I don't know if this next generation will care about japanese culture at all.

I knew it was bait, but then I started thinking about it, and felt the need to drop my thoughts on 4chan. it didn't take as much effort as learning japanese while working 8 hours and taking 18 credits.

I haven't had too much trouble absorbing the language, though not as quickly as you. but Japanese is generally difficult for an english speaker, especially compared to spanish or dutch. you're probably just good at languages. how quickly are you getting the kanji? personally I know alot of 1st/2nd grade level kanji, but that's only a fraction.
