She is hardworking for her goddesses because they need faith to live. And yet she is bold enough to talk back to them if necessary (Suwako in 12.3), but can also go really far for their sake (the threat to Reimu in MoF). She is nice, polite (even if she accidentally offends people), and is one of the few characters firmly on the side of humans and willing to fight for their sake. A goldmine of real world references, she understands much more than most of the characters, which also leads to awesome facets of her personality like the interests in mecha and popculture or broad knowledge about nuclear physics. Her disposition is a breath of fresh air compared to gloomy or arrogant citizens of Gensokyo, not to mention her being so energetic it's contagious. She's basically Haruhi minus the jerkassery.

She *might* be a little too eager a youkai exterminator, but that's just a side effect of learning a fighting style that utilizes your godly powers for an extremely fun, harmless and colorful battles. Her eagerness also contrasts with Reimu, who is mostly grumpy towards all the things Sanae is excited with. She's more like the Reimu of PC98.

She is the one girl that would both protect you and become your best friend, brightening your days. And not a Mary Sue either, considering the humiliation she goes through early.

Her skills are awesome too. A wide array of colorful miracles, from water to wind and falling stars, goddess summons, standard miko stuff like amulets, goheis and barriers. She ever plays around with ridiculous stuff like exploding fortune packets and rice crops.

And as for her clothes, they're pure eyecandy. Her eyes and hair have beautiful colors, her attire is simple yet creative (the sleeves and patterns on her skirt), the detached sleeves + petite shoulders combo is top cute, she's a shapely young woman and she even has a semi-official school uniform as an alternate costiume. What more could one possibly want?

It's called loyalty. And if you wanna nitpick, Okuu was the only truly "dastardly" scheme of theirs. Stuff such as palanquin treasure hunt, obtaining faith from desire spirits, the dam project and the cable car are pretty mild as far as Gensokyo goes. Compare Nitori's scams or Reimu's trying to convince people that they have to buy her air pipes to survive the falling star.

Now that you mentioned it, I really regret the "no repeats in fighting games" rule and Sanae not swapping her LoLK slot with someone from ULiL. She feels relatively unimportant for LoLK so far and she would fit the ULiL story as a fiddle, to the point where it feels unnatural not to include her. I'd have loved to see if she reacted to seeing the Outside World again with nostalgia or rather with disgust and her discussing the pros and cons of both worlds with Sumireko. I suppose I can at most hope for Sanae meeting that dream projection of hers in the following WaHH chapters.
