I also have a nasty problem of not being able to carry a lead and my block hating me.
No matter how much I try to block, it only seems to work in mid-air. It's stupid.

Go get the full card file from the wiki and customize your decks. It helps. It also makes the game more fun because you can tailor characters to work for you.

You need to airtech less. Airteching 100% of the time means you end up trapped and can get smashed. Patchy can keep you stuck in the air forever blocking just using fireballs. When you get knocked down, let yourself go. Unless you have a very good shot at laying down a hit it is never worth it to tech.

Most characters don't have worthwhile low cost spellcards sadly. Yukari is an exception because both of her single cost cards let her cancel out of reckless moves and they will punish any poorly timed attacks during their existence. A lot of characters really function better waiting for the super level 4 or 5 attack though.

Marisa: Meteonic Shower (Huge spirit damage)
Yuyuko Nether Sign "Peaceful Route to the Underworld" (when the fan-spin is blocked)
Reisen: Corolla Vision
Komachi: Boat Ride and Purple Spirit Spam
Really at the end of the day Komachi and Yukari are the only ones who can get away with it.
