Seriously? Then I must be one of those so-called "newfags", since I've never given a fuck about the characters and their piddling relationships for over three years and just kept doing nothing but playing the damn games. Not only that, but I've also been fostering a ever-growing hatred towards anyone who made a huge deal of whatever a bunch of little girls or talking heads do on their own time.

At any rate, I played the game, OP, and it looks awful.
I like Strike Witches as much as every guy on /a/, plus I'm a long time huge shmup nerd so I too would like to see the series being translated in a game of this genre eventually, but this is just painfully bad. Even ignoring that the entire "game" is made up of just a single level, what's the use of two useless option-like characters if not to confuse the player? And don't make me get started about Nerois behaving very little like a Neuroi.

I hate the slowdown in Cave games, but because it's hyped so much I played some DoDonPachi. Best result was 13M points, dying to the 1-4 boss. I stopped playing because I still haven't cleared Imperishable Night Lunatic yet, and it seems counterproductive to play more than one STG at once. I got used to the slowdown, and I can confirm that DoDonPachi is better than Touhou. Better graphics, better music, better scoring system, better pacing. The actual bullet speed isn't much different from Lunatic mode Touhou, but there are less breaks when you're in no danger, which must be what people complain about when they call Touhou slow.

DoDonPachi has 1 frame of input lag, which is barely perceptible, but some other Cave games have more than 1.

I also tried Radiant Silvergun (arcade) because it's famous too, but it has 4 frames of input lag! This isn't an emulation bug, because there's only 1 frame lag after inserting a credit. Maybe the Saturn version is better, haven't tried that yet. It's highly annoying, but it doesn't really make much difference because you creep along at a snail's pace anyway. This game should be the one criticized for being slow, not Touhou. It also seems to be very memorization intensive. I only played for about an hour or two, and I didn't see any reason to continue. Good music though.

Hardware slowdown isn’t nearly as prominent in Cave games as people make out, it’s just a feature in Mushihime-sama and Futari. And therefore features in their many “hardest boss ever lol” movies.

>> No.1335718

>>1335640
I used SDLmame 0.127, hacked for frame doubling so I can display true lowres modes on a VGA CRT. This hack just duplicates a single line in src/osd/sdl/video.c, and this stupid brute force method effectively halves your CPU speed (but it also slightly reduces input lag). For this reason, even though I have an E8400, I had to recompile using profile guided optimization to avoid dropping frames on the boss fights, as Radiant Silvergun takes a fast CPU to emulate. MAME says emulation accuracy isn't 100%, but I didn't notice anything wrong other than the sound effects being too quiet.

Some day I'll write a better patch to automatically shave off every last millisecond of input lag and avoid wasting CPU cycles, but the current hack is good enough.

I also hacked drivers/hid/usbhid/hid-core.c in the Linux kernel to increase polling rate for my keyboard to further reduce input lag.

Some say that Mushihime-sama Futari Black Label is the finest Cave STG in existence, but I wouldn't know.

Maybe if I had lots of money to spend on an arcade board + cab.

They have PS2 emulators now don’t they? ISO must be around.

I have the PS2 version, but it’s a pretty sloppy port. In the arcade when things get busy the slowdown is gradual, on the PS2 port it just snaps between slow and fast so when exiting a pattern everything goes hyper speed suddenly.

Still, Arrange mode is pretty cool. I certainly wasn’t going to be fighting the TFB in the Arcade without spending a month’s wages.

You can just get a super-gun, but it’s still crazy expensive for the PCB. It’s pretty damn sweet, though God mode is a bit strange - it’s easier than Ultra.

Ketsui and DDP:DFK seem more like my kind of thing. There’s a new Death Smiles coming out soon, Mega Black Label (or something), with a new stage and another new character. It’ll probably make it more in line with the others for difficulty.

I don’t know if the 360 port will be this version or the previous, though.
