I started with Alpha 3 and I have no complaints. It's pretty easy, so if you start with it, you might become the kind of faggot who likes easy mode games. Alpha Gaiden is usually considered the best in balancing difficulty. You can play SRW without knowledge of moon, menues are easy to memorize. If you're really anal about moon, though, OG1 and 2 on the GBA are in english.

Also, SRW4 (I think) on SNES has an english patch, but it's hard as hell, don't start with it.
