EoSD: Sakuya is incredibly popular and is playable in six fucking games
PCB: Youmu is very popular and is playable in four games
IN: Reisen is pretty damn popular and is playable in two games and is the main character of an entire manga
MOF: Sanae is decently popular and is playable in three games along with frequently showing up in WaHH
SA: Orin's pretty popular amongst the cast
TD: Futo's pretty popular and is playable in one game (probably to be two soon)
DDC: Seija's pretty popular and GETS HER OWN FUCKING GAME

UFO: Shou is not only incredibly unpopular but she barely fucking shows up in fucking anything in canon and is less liked than her goddamn pet rat

Really, Touhou fandom? Every stage five boss except Shou gets to be popular? She's so beautiful but she gets such little art. Easily one of the sexiest 2hus ever.

Pardon the analyzing, but here's how I see Shou's failure.

Nazrin - Shou is ZUN trying to do the Tewi - Reisen dynamic again, basically the smart subordinate with a sorta klutz older sister, but there are key difference:
- Tewi is actually malevolent/scummy, she isn't a nice character, so people who don't like good-two-shoes would have problems with her
- Reisen despite her klutz status actually got exposed much on in the following games (PoFV, SWR, Soku) and manga, she actually gain a badass and grim side to her goodness that makes her an easy character to favorite
- Nazrin is actually nice, unlike Tewi, she actually tries very hard to help her master (Shou) and canon material even evaluates her position further by making a direct servant of Bishamonten sent to watch over Shou
- here comes the problem, Shou, she's also nice but she doesn't stand out compared to the smartness of Nazrin, and her later material makes even more of a joke: not only she lost the pagoda, she's also useless with a spear (which she uses as a walking stick), and her Bishamonten avatar is actually a luck god instead of a war god and even the titular god didn't trust her (hence sending Nazrin).

Shou just ends up looking even more klutzy and incompetent, even compared to her subordinate.

What confuses me us that Sakuya, Youmu, Sanae, and the other stage five bosses mooch off the popularity of their respective stage six boss but Byakuren's popularity hasn't fallen to Shou at all. Which is even weirder given that her more sensible personality serves as a good foil to Byakuren's airheaded ditziness.

Sanae does not mooch off Kanakp's popularity - she vastly outclasses her (Sanae once was second in the Popularity Poll and never strayed far below the top ten, whereas Kanako was 32 at her best and is now 49).
Not particularly surprising, considering Sanae's fun and likable personality as well as Kanako's controversial decisions throughout the games and non-standard hag design.

As for Shou, all I ever see from secondaries about her is "fuck curvy lasers". For some reason her danmaku is more popular than her personality. I chalk it up to her exotic design and secondaries not bothering to read up UFO character profiles.

The word you're looking for is feminine, which Shou certainly isn't, nor does she need to be. The problems are that she *is* a klutz and a hard-drinker, which kinda undermines the stoic and devout image as well as that her exotic apperance doesn't cater to your typical secondary Touhou loli or BBA fan (despite none of the characters being really sexualized in canon).

But...she is? She's not a moeblob, but a lot of artists draw her as a womanly boobhu.

And even when they don't, she still has a feminine charm--see pic related--but she's just less "cute" and more "mature", like Kanako or Byakuren.

Shou doesn't really look THAT masculine, she just isn't as overtly "cute" like a lot of other 2hus.

That just means she's more than a one-note character. And given Byakuren's hardline stance on Buddhist precepts, I'm amazed more people don't make jokes about her catching and admonishing Shou.

And no one ever does anything with her and Chen/Orin even though they're all cats. I mean the 2hu fandom has made jokes over incredibly minor things like that before.

Shou's not really beautiful to me, her hair is disgustingly short - but that's personal taste.
The problem - I think - that Shou has is that she's one of the, if not the bitchiest stage five bosses to defeat and that there's nothing really.... spectacular about her.
Sakuya is a gamebreaker with her time-stop abilities.
Youmu is a half-half who's badass in her own right.
Reisen was introduced for her sex appeal, we all know this.
Sanae is popular because she's playable in three games - which is because she's one of ZUN's creator pets.
Orin and Futo - no explanation to be honest.
And Seija - as much as she is despicable and hateworthy to no end, the fact that she fucks up your interface while playing really does make her stand out. Also, she's the perfect troll.

I am also a spear kind of guy and born in the year of the Tiger. Just a lot of thing came together for her for me to like her. I can't wait to use her in the LoT2 X-Pak.

You got Sanae wrong. Her quirks are Outside World knowledge, cheerfulness, possible geek/otaku side and being 2P miko. Sakuya and Youmu are far worse creator pets than her, plus more popular than the rest due to how old they are (and Sakuya being a part of SDM).

As for Futo, she owes her popularity the exotic look that Shou also has with her antiquated approach and childish apperance that make her stand out in TD cast. That and riding a boat. Orin on the other hand doesn't seem to be really that much more popular than Shou, with her main perks being her being a catgirl, her fun personality, her zombie fairies and her tenacity and diffuculty of her danmaku. Still more memorable than Shou, I suppose.

I don't even get why Sanae is so popular in japan. Probably because Sanae is a slut.
Well, Shou. There is nothing that special about her, kinda forgetable. But to be fair, UFOs cast is a weird bunch and Shou doesn't stick out by herself. Unzan is more memorable than Ichirin, Murasa has that anchor thing and Shou has her curvy lasers that stick more in your mind than herself.
