It is real, he just can't release it to the public. Blame ZUN. He even made his own game series because he couldn't release his remakes to the public.

From what I've read, he can't release remakes of his remakes since ZUN didn't allow it. Something about "I want my old games to remain with the same feel they had". Although I have no idea if it's true or not. All I know is the he isn't allowed to release them and he treats it like a joke to hide it, which is a shame.
