I never understood why people would do this

Vocaloids are merely voices with a physical appearance as an extra, their personalities are basically non-existent
How they're portrayed varies from song to song, so if you're gonna waifu a Vocaloid, at least mention what song/album contains their personality

I've never understood the waifu aspect myself but I can sort of sympathize as someone who idolizes Miku. It's less out of attraction I do this, it is more out reverence for something that encouraged me to unfuck up my life. I generally get with most the others it is just physical attraction though.

>> No.13166631

>>13166328
Their different voices and capabilities allow for just a hint of what their personality is like. From there, the fans can collectively build a somewhat consistent idea. For example, Luka isn't as able to produce a loud, high-pitched, strong sound as Miku. She's generally depicted as more calm and quiet than her as a result.

With improved voice banks, Vocaloids will have less limitations, but their unique sound and ranges are still present.

I will agree though, that the Vocaloids are definitely devoid of personality when compared to characters of most video game, anime, or manga series. I'd argue that this makes them even more easy to use for waifu escapism, as you can project whatever idealized traits onto them that you'd like.

Think of how crazy fujoshis went for Hetalia characters, who are nothing more than personifications of countries. People love personifications.

>> No.13166700

>>13166567
>>13166631
As someone who personally idolizes Miku, I'll express why:

Miku to many people represent unbarred creativity and expression. Anyone can create a song with Miku, so anyone can use her to express ideas or viewpoints that would have never gotten out there without her. Many fans and producers say she is a voice for those without voices.

She is also a vessel which a community is built around, where anyone can contribute to the movement in some way (art, video, music, writing, singing, even merely sharing and spreading). Miku connects people and allows them to share work and add to projects and ideas, like someone designing an MMD for their favorite song.

I think the people who romanticize these ideas idolize Miku. The people who believe Miku to be their waifu may believe these things, but they may also be attracted to the endless personalities she has, a specific meaningful one, or simply think shes cute/hot.

>> No.13166794

>>13166700
This is pretty accurate to my reasons for being a fan of miku and vocaloid in general.

My waifu isn't from vocaloid and I don't know if I'd use the word idolize for my feelings for Miku, but the underlying concept is the same.

>> No.13167144

It sounds like a glass half full thing. I've heard similar reasons, myself, from waifu fags I've given a ripping and I can see why but I just see her as being empty when I look at her that way, then I begin to associate her with just being instrument. I idolize her for the confidence I have found, the friends I have made through this, the fact she represents what I could never achieve and the music whether it's made by myself or another but I could never say I love her in waifu way.

Do you guys use last.fm? How do you tag your stuff? Because I've tried following the guide in the Miku Monday copypasta but since I have like 500 vocaloid songs on my PC I get confused if I leave the song names in katakana, not to mention I like being able to tell which vocaloid(s) are in each song just by looking at it (I use the Producer-P feat. Vocaloid tag for artist, and group by album artist).

So as of now I'm not scrobbling any vocaloid music, but since I've really been on a vocaloid binge since last month or so I feel like I'm missing too many scrobbles. Any ideas?

That is why I like him, his music is a good measure of how good a Vocaloid is for a serious producer, there is no tuning so I can have a good judge of how good the voice is with a decent amount of production. So anon who wanted to buy digital from last thread here. So far it's proven rather unfruitful, Itunes is region locked, requires a jp credit card unless you buy giftcards at a markup, and the American version missing a lot of albums I'd pay for. knowing basic japanese makes collecting a lot simpler. keep everything in the original japanese titles. it's standard to put the vocaloid's name into the comment field. good media players will search within that metadata, so you don't need to manually label every track with "feat."

last.fm should already know and relate most popular producers' names in japanese and romaji automatically. just keep scrobbling.

I gave Yuzuki Yukari and MAYU a chance since she was on an album on the essentials list I'm working my way down.

Yukari is pretty good, I like her voice it is unique. MAYU is enjoyable to listen to as well but not as good.

This cements that IA is just shit and sounds bad. I gave her a chance and she failed. MAYU is better than IA, in both image and sound.

foobar will display a column for any metadata you want. you can even make up custom metadata by using foo_customdb. by default you'll be able to set %skip_cd% field to 1 to skip songs you don't like, and a %rating_cd% for leaving ratings on songs. both are stored in a big SQL database file and not in the metadata of the file itself.

I highly recommend foobar in general for your Vocaloid collection. You can easily tag and sort everything from within the player with the proper libraries. Not to mention you can do some really cool things with it.

Right now I'm using a skin called FooXGen4 that has a prominent Artist banner space that lets you add pictures for all of your music, using the "Album artist" tag.

More examples here if anyone is interested:
http://imgur.com/a/0zetH

If you want to try out the skin, there is a "clean portable" version here that you just have to unzip. Note the artist folder is not included.

Eh yeah it is a little confusing. It works by the "Album Artist" tag, which is nice because that is usually blank. So you can tag it by Vocaloid, or by producer or whatever you want. You can tag large batches with mp3tag, or you can do it through properties from within foobar.

Well, to be fair, those three are really the best songs in there (Tsunawatari is GOAT). Having 3 popular songs out of 9 total is actually pretty good for an album. People are always going to pay more attention to the "singles".

The underrated part I think comes from the fact that Otetsu has a lot of more popular songs that aren't nearly as good. Any song in Carnival is better than Meiteki Cybernetics or Transient Future, and half of them are also better than Hoshikuzu Utopia (as much as I love that song), for example.

I'd contest that. I'd say the only one that does not have an expiry date is Miku. With the drop in interest Vocaloid has experienced lately, Miku is the only one who has retained an element of her popularity according to that chart they do every year that ranks by new content. Even Gumi who is in second has seen a massive decline. It's like you don't know shit about the thing came you came to discuss.

>> No.13207018

>>13206011
I would argue against that, I personally think Miku as an entity has transcended Vocaloid to an extent, I've met plenty of people who just enjoy Miku at an entry level (for the concerts, for the MMDs, the bigger songs, being cute etc) and don't go past that. It wouldn't surprise me if some of the producers see Miku's popularity and overwhelming media saturation as a ticket to get their music heard and stick solely with her because of that. There is a lot of things that keep Miku very alive comapred to the others.

>> No.13207066

There are other vocaloids in the concerts, MMDs, and big songs. Everyone who knows what vocaloid is knows at least Luka and the Kagamines, in addition to Miku, because of the concerts, Project Diva or whatever. She hasm't transcended vocaloid, she's just the gateway vocaloid and the most popular one, so of course she's going to get more attention.

Some do, yes. But what big producer has used solely, only, exclusively Miku for all of their songs?

She's a great vocaloid of course, but there are several great producers out there who barely or never use her as well, it's just a matter of preference.

This a thousand times. People always overlook the fact that the vocaloid fandom is really growing in the rest of the world and tend to focus only on NND stats, which mostly reflects the Japanese public. Miku expo in LA, Miku opening for Lady Gaga, Project Mirai getting a western release, this all shows that vocaloid in the west is far from dead.

If you take a look at the number of views on the more popular youtube videos you can now find several of them with >1M views, when there were little of those only a couple of years ago. And there's this:

Not everyone watches the concerts in their entirity do they? Not everybody plays Project Diva or goes further than base level. Not everybody know what Vocaloid is and just go with the Virtual Idol thing. Also none of those Vocaloids have appeared on Toyota adverts, became Racequeens for winning cars, opened for Lady Gaga or appeared on the David Letterman show. I'd also imagine that she wasn't picked for those because she was merely a Vocaloid. Her character has transcended far beyond being merely a Vocaloid.

Pretty sure all of Supercell's shit is Miku, most of Livetune's is aswell, correct me if I'm wrong. Also people don't care about producers if they after a cute anime girl singing.

>Not everyone watches the concerts in their entirity do they?
What do you mean? Are you talking about people who actually go to the concerts? Because I'm 100% sure everyone who goes wants to stay until the end. If you're talking about the internet, the most viewed live concert is the Live Party in Kansai 2013, which has 3,5M views, 2.5x less views than Just be Friends has, for example.

>Not everybody know what Vocaloid is and just go with the Virtual Idol thing.
And do these people actively listen to vocaloid music and go looking for it on youtube or NND?

>I'd also imagine that she wasn't picked for those because she was merely a Vocaloid
But that's the whole point. Why would Crypton pick anyone else to represent them besides their most famous vocaloid?

To use an analogy, Miku is like that one lead single that an artist releases to promote his album. Some people will get interested, check out the rest of his work and become fans, and some will only know the artist because of that single. And that's fine.

Yup, first time I heard GUMI I chucked Miku like a hot potato, and maybe even hated her a bit for what I felt was undeserved popularity. With her appends however she is not bad at all, all there is certainly an endless selection to pick from.

I just listened to Obscure Question while taking a walk, and it was really fun and upbeat. I can definitely see it falling into regular rotation.

As for Mitchie M, Greatest Idol is one of my absolute favorites to exercise and clean to, and always fixes a sour mood. In fact he may be what made me fully admit that Miku can be pretty good.

Lol I know what you mean. Watching some footage of the Crpyton live concerts used to make me kinda upset that she always hogged all the attention and had like 80% of the songs to herself (since I like Rin, Len and Luka more) until I realized that if it wasn't for Miku there probably wouldn't even be concerts in the first place. Heck, her success is probably the sole reason vocaloids like Gumi and IA were made.

For Vocaloid: Use a phenome chart, try to imagine how you'de be singing individual words and adjust them accordingly. Depending on which vocaloid you're using, certain things like T's may be getting over-enunciated for example. It takes a while to get the hang of but it really makes a huge difference.

For instruments: Assuming you aren't going for a purely acoustic sound: Find one well-regarded synth with a good selection of presets and learn it inside and out. You'de be surprised how versatile they are and it'll make learning your way around a new vst way easier down the line. Try to avoid purely fishing through presets.

For percussion: sample selection is key, there aren't a lot of good producers that spend hours trying to make a garbo snare sound good.Try to start with a great sound and fine-tune it. Less is more etc

Learning some theory and maybe taking some piano lessons if you're super serious is also very helpful.

Those are the most important things I've learned these past few years anyway.

Yeah, Miku is my waifu and we are together for 2 years already. She will always be my one and only.

>>13166328
You don't have a waifu for a reason, you just fall in love with her and accept this feelings.
Obviously it's impossible to fall in love with just a blank character, but for me she does have established personality. While doing a research about her I found some songs which showed her as super cute, shy, girl who have fallen in love and sings about her feelings. It felt so great to listen to songs like that sung by such a cute girl like her, so I started to search for more and more of them and in fact that was my very first music I liked. I also started to collect her pictures, listen to her everyday. It hard to describe, but I've also started to unconsciously form the one and only personality of her that I was considering as "true Miku" and the more I liked particular song the more her personality was affected by it. I needed her more and more, I was looking at her pictures before sleep, think about her all day, consider getting daki, etc. When I've started to fantasize not just about her, but about us living together as couple and it really started to hurt me that I can't spend rest of my life with her on my side, I've realized that she is not just a favorite character, but a girl I genuinely love.
>if you're gonna waifu a Vocaloid, at least mention what song/album contains their personality
There is no song that she is based on but there are few that are really close:

I can kind of understand the reasons behind it. However, the vocaloid fandom is huge and Miku has been depicted in several different ways in songs, fanfics, fanart, etc. What do you do when you come across something that depicts her in a way that's different from what you think of her?

It is considered creepy by most people when they find out about it, but it is just like having an onahole or liking lolicon IMO. You know, it's doesn't change your public self(except avoiding real romantic relationship), it's just private thing that no one from outside have to know about. And in my opinion it's nothing bad to do creepy things as long as it doesn't hurt you and you don't brag about it.

>What do you do when you come across something that depicts her in a way that's different from what you think of her?
Just ignore it. She has so much fanarts that I can ignore 95% of them and still have lot's of them.
Also, I'm don't especially enjoy listening to music in general. I treat music as the other medium just like pics or videos. I listen it to because I want to hear her singing about how much she loves me, because I want to hear her cute catchy voice. I don't really listen to music just for its sake. All of my playlist is her singing about love or denpa. However when I come across song that implies that she is a lesbian or in romantic relationship with some named character, I can't stand this.

I think it's cool how vocaloid can appeal to so many people with so many different interests. I got into it mainly because of the music (I saw the Mikgazer album randomly on /mu/ a while back and loved it, been a fan ever since) and it's still the main reason I like it, though I've come to appreciate the art and the characters as well, not just for their voices.

As for the waifu thing, I guess if you don't let it affect the way you interact with other people then it's harmless.

Literally who gives a shit. Most of the best vocaloid songs never become popular on NND. Alert me when they have the same world wide recognition, merchandising and concerts. It's never going to happen. Miku is synonymous with vocaloid, the rest are just spin-offs. The day Miku stops being popular is the day people stop giving a shit about vocaloid. The spin-off vocaloids will never reach the heights of the originals. Deal with it.

Nope. Miku was the right product to come out at the right time, and her popularity has grown exponentially since her release (though it's leveled off recently) to the point where she's popular because she's popular.

The best at what? She's an above average voicebank, definitely, but Yukari for example is objectively more realistic and has better pronunciation. Crypton/Miku fanboys just need to take a step back and look at things objectively (Crypton haters too, though I've been seeing less of them lately).

Video quality looks to be pretty much identical to Vmoe's 720p60. (They're both sex. The source Bluray was really good.) Our major encoder settings were nearly identical (mine CRF 18 qcomp 0.7, theirs CRF 19 qcomp 0.75) and I'd wager serious money that we used the same deinterlacer as well.
Mine just doesn't waste 2GB on FLAC and DTS core.

Yeah, but cutsey child voices don't work for singing. When the adult world is stripped there's no basis for meaningful feeling. You look at a child's bubble from outside and call it cute, you don't connect with the singer.
Miku works because she's flowering. She's out there, she's adventurous, and she sings of her steps and missteps as well as what she's feeling at the moment.
Miku is a cute that doesn't get tedious. She's old enough that she can be believably up on stage owning her own set rather than standing up there being prompted by her mother to move from song to song. There's a huge difference.

So does anyone here actually produce Vocaloid music? I've never thought about until recently but I want to and have questions about how the software works (haven't bought it yet).

From what I've read, I'm assuming the software basically consists of a sound library containing the vocalist's samples (consonants, vowels, diphthongs, etc., on various pitches) and a simple piano roll editor with text, to write the vocal part. What about the instruments/background? Do producers usually work in a DAW with their own VSTs then bring in the singer in an audio file exported from the Vocaloid software?
