IMHO the main difference is that they don't engage as much in public as the Chinese. There are many gangs in China who rule their turf by strong-arming street vendors, breaking their shops and even do crazy shit like chopping somebody up with butcher knives and machetes in the open street. Yakuza are more "honourable". They invest in clubs and other establishments and make their way into local politics. They actually make most of their money with legal/grey area stuff and keep the violence to a minimum. If they have to send a message, it's not even them who do it, but the freshly recruited young morons they keep on the sideline. They drive up with mopeds and smash your car/shop window with pipes and planks like monkey children.

I've also heard stories from a guy who used to work in Japan as an illegal worker for a few years. He said some Yakuza require you to chop off your pinky finger as a sign of loyalty. He also saw some funny shit, like a Yakuza guy setting one of his horses straight. The guy drove down the street on a bicycle and the girl had to run behind him in high heels and keep up. He also said they eat crazy shit, even for Asians as a ritual. Like drinking snake blood.

I wouldn't want to be one, but if the rumours are true, they apparently fuck a lot of Japanese idols, especially the very young ones. And I don't think there is anything more beautiful and precious than a young Japanese teen girl, so I'm mega jelly.

when I taught english in japan the yakuza parents - 5 or 6 of them - were easily the best parents of the lot. demanded no special treatment and took a big interest in kids' education. strict as fuck, even for japan. common knowledge they were yakuza. school counselor was apparently one when he was a kid too.

easy to spot them as they were pretty much the only men who ever came to parents' meetings.
