we live in high density areas where there is no place or time to take dogs for a walk. we also spend long hrs outside the apartments. Cats can live with a bowl of food, fresh water, a sandbox, and can be locked inside the house for a long time. Just makesure to let it have something to do and it'll be fine. A dog like the Husky is terrible if you leave it indoors and it's actually cruel for the dog.
That said I can't keep a cat because I got too much things that will shock pets, computer parts, screws and stuff all over the place that pets can swallow. That and my bookshelves full of stuff that pets will love to ruin.
