> What is kigurumi?

Kigurumi (着ぐるみ) is a kind of costuming where the player wears a full body skin suit (called hadatai) along with an anime mask. The Japanese word "kigurumi" refers to any kind of full-body costume, but in this thread we're specifically looking for anime masks combined with skin-toned bodysuits - properly known as "animegao" kigurumi.

> Where can I find kigurumi pictures/videos?

http://www.animegao.com/ and http://kigup.com combines many kigurumi blogs and sites into a single feed. On pixiv, the 着ぐるみ and 着ぐる絵 tags contain many relevant images. Many Japanese kigurumi players now use Twitter. http://pastebin.com/nYuh4aat contains a random assortment of links.

Kigurumi players often stream videos on http://www.ustream.tv.. You can find them by searching for "kigurumi" or "着ぐるみ". http://www.mediafire.com/?xtqkc2yn75u54 contains many kigurumi fetish videos. Don't beg.

> Where can I buy kigurumi masks?

http://kigup.com/page/WhereToBuyKigurumiSuits
(possibly outdated/incomplete)

A reasonable mask and bodysuit will cost roughly 1000-2000 USD depending on quality.

> Drama?

No. Kigurumi girls have to be cute and friendly, not just in appearance, but in heart as well!
That means there is no porn.

> Isn't it usually dudes who wear these?

Yes.

interested in your thoughts on this. I'm into it for the same reason, but because it's a flawless representation (ie complete transformation) when done properly. To me there's no point in doing it unless you can do it entirely properly. You have to be able to cross the line from "some guy in a suit" to "this character", etc.
Same thing goes for female masking but kig is more relaxed and I guess for lack of a better term whimsical.

I may as well ask a general question.

For those of you who are interested in kig, how many of you are into other forms of crossdressing?

Some I know began with cross-dressing, but were unsatisfied with their look and the time makeup took. They stepped up to female masking to totally alter their look, but fell into the trap of being associated with the fetish aspects of rubber and were unable to perform in public.

When they came over to Animegao kig, they found more acceptance with the public, due to the fact they are becoming live dolls or mascots who could interact with kids better.

They worked hard to portray the character as a unique personality, rather than just a guy in a suit.

It depends if your just cross dressing for past time like cosplay or if your doing it to become female. No mask will make you female, to many kigs talk about wanting to be female. It sad to think that they believe a mask will do that. A kigurumi mask looks a better than a masculine face when someone is doing a female cosplay in my opinion. I see no problem with people using kig as form of cross dressing as long as they using it just fun and not expecting to pass as female.

The reason I asked the question is because you go to a site like dollspride and it's literally just overweight older men using shitty masks and wearing latex. It shames me to think that just due to the nature of the activity we are clumped in with them. They're like the wyu folkof female masking but it's 100x worse. Perfectionism is clearly not a trait among that crowd

Probably this one, by Kamituro. Pretty much any fap video made by him can summon instaboners for me. I like how he doesn't make a sound, except for the occasional heavy breath after an orgasm. Just hearing the muffled noise after he climaxes is amazing. That's one reason why I don't like the kigurumi porn made by AV studios since they usually have the actresses make as much noise as possible, which turns me off.

The way that Kamituro handles himself is also a huge turn on. Just watch any of his videos and you'll know what I mean.

OK, maybe I'm new here. I realize that most Kig masks reflect characters between say eight years old, in the case of some of the "Magical Girls", through high school, to possibly early twenties in the case of some Maids, Teachers and Space Heroines.

I also get that the idea here is for the Kig girl characters to be pretty, cute, and friendly.

But are there any Kigurumi characters out there who represent the older demographics, or the secondary characters in Anime who are not as shapely? Are there any other Kig character stereotypes?

lets do these in order shall we

1.The older demographic of characters: There's the odd one, but mainly the reason people do kigurumi at first is because they want to get as close as possibly to cosplaying characters they normally wouldn't be able to.
The thing with anime as well is that older female characters usually appear to be in their early twenties or look like 90 something years old. (we're gonna assume all the characters we're talking about are female because there's hardly any male kigs) and really, who wants to get a kig of an elderly person anyway.

2. Background characters that are not as shapely: I imagine you mean characters who are fatter or otherwise don't fit the regular anime build , these characters are few and far between as it is and a lot of money goes into kigurumi, if people want to portray a character from a series they aren't that likely to pick a background character unless they really like them (and even if you where planning to portray a chubby character which I personally want to do, pic related, it doesn't mean you shouldn't keep working on getting fit because a "chubby" anime character is basically just a regularly proportioned human)

3.Character stereotypes: I'm not entirely sure what you mean but i assume its something like different archetypes of kigurumi?

Some people use masks that look way more like tradition dolls or BJD and some people have masks that are closer to reality than others.

I'll post a couple photos below to show you what I mean (and of course there's always those more realistic female mask types)

Maybe a little explanation would help clarify things.
Let's take the movie Kiki's Delivery Service as a case in point.

I have seen a lot of cosplayers wandering around as Kiki the witch, with a plushie Jiji. However few of the other characters are ever done, like Tombo, Ursula, Osono, or even Madam.

Given that Osono, the baker's wife, is pregnant during the movie. She would be a challenging character to perform as Kigurumi, but not impossible for a tall guy who's willing to crossplay. Get another guy to do Fukuo the baker, and they could wander around a convention seeking out all the Cosplay Kiki's to pose with. Given their height difference from most Kiki cosplayers, it would make for a believable group photo.

So what we have here, is performers willing to do minor characters, because they would stand out in group shots. Or compliment existing cosplayers.

And that's my question. How many Kig performers do these characters?

I guess that's my point in a way. At many conventions you have massive photo shoots for all cosplayers doing one particular Anime.

Taking your comment, if there was a Vocaloid photo shoot, you'd get dozens of Miku, including the Kig Miku. In that crowd, someone doing the less popular Vocaloids as a Kig, would stand out.

I once saw a Fate /Stay Night photo shoot, and the Kig Saber put them all to shame.

yeah I agree a more diverse range of characters from any one series being kigged would be interesting, I suppose the only problem is getting enough people who like the show, want to spend that amount of money, and want to do it all together

one of the most common pieces of advice in the community is "go for a character you really like" because its obviously more expensive that regular cosplay, but man if i had the money id get some people together and do what you're describing all the time (im talking paying for masks for people who want to be involved here)

In my opinion there's actually a disparity between normal cosplayers/character kigs and OC kigs

Cosplayers usually cosplay because they like a series/particular character and want to dress up as that character perhaps with friends who like the same thing to show their appreciation for the character and the series, but they're still very much into the social aspect.

Character kigs are sort of the same except they want to represent the character as well as is physically possible and forego the socialization to a degree, this is often because the character they really want to represent doesn't look at all like how they look in real life.

OC kigs on the other hand seem to want to kig purely for the experience of crossdressing and wearing a mask etc etc, I'm not saying there isn't overlap but its often more likely that these types of kigs will be into the fetish side to a degree or do it as some for of escapism(I mean think how many people buy kigs compared to how many you actually see.)

My point is that if you can already convincingly cosplay a character you probably wouldn't feel the need to do a kig of them because it takes away some aspects of the experience

(I'm seriously writing essay amounts of bullshit here but its fun to write about)

Anyway here is an example, I've done regular cosplay and crossplay before, (not to a massive degree but I've done it) and I could probably convincingly crossplay the character I want to kig anyway, its because i fall sort of into the park of wanting to do it just for the experience that im even considering getting a mask of her and I also fall into the character kig section as well because while i could represent her I think I could do it better in kigurumi

I just think the reason people want to kig and the reason people want to cosplay do overlap a lot but they can also be different so it would be more likely that you find a group of people who haven't cosplayed anybody from that series before that want to do that series as kigs

(also the pictures are unrelated but i thought it was getting a bit barren, thanks for putting up with my waffling)

ABS is 20% cheaper than FRP. FRP is also lighter and has a longer life span. FRP is generally stronger than ABS. ABS is more flexible so better with impact damage while FRP can splinter as it more brittle. ABS and FRP are both good materials but ABS is cheaper and less labour costs.

The poster said the average price for a full custom (AVERAGE -- Which means there are lower and there are higher) was $800.00. I was asking who would I go to to get a $800.00 custom?

This also begs the question.. What does a full custom mask under the AVERAGE $800.00 look like?

FRP will not last longer than ABS. Polyester resins break down over time through oxidization and UV. The only thing that breaks down ABS is acetone .... and fire.

Yes FRP is harder than ABS but that is the nature of glass cloth used in the layup process.

My understanding is Cici installs a FRP layer inside the ABS shell. So essentially you would be getting the best of both worlds.

How can it be less labor to work with ABS? Does it mold itself in some way? You can't lay it up like FPR, ABS has to melted into the required shape using specialized equipment and skills.

A lot of misinformation being generated in that post...

OK yes fine we can discuss the properties. First let's work out what you mean as FRP. FRP is a general term but is commonly used for fibreglass that can be made various ways with different resins. My facts weren't not incorrect.just applied to larger manufacturing and methods used by professionals. The properties of fibreglass are dependant on how it is made and what with.
As for cici I still think the masks are over priced and there are far better options, so anything to discourage the thought that the masks are any good is important if I want to see better kigs in the future. I am also surprised she let some random person get to her. People can see the masks for themselves make their own decisions. Materials really don't matter and never did as I said both ABS and FRP are both easily durable and strong enough for kigurumi masks. So what else would you like to add about materials? Surely people can do there own research.

Technically FRP is the acronym for Fibre Reinforced Plastic. This could mean all sorts of things as glass filled nylon or the traditional "fibreglas' are both considered FRP.

But traditionally it seems kig fabrication is glass cloth and polyester resin. The most popular and available combination for fabrication.

Making a mask using vinyl esters would actually created a tougher more impact resistant shell but there is higher toxicity as well as cost of materials.

One could also use epoxy as a resin but that increases the cost more with no really notice le benifit from a fabrication standpoint (pertaining to kig masks anyway). It would cut the smell down significantly tho.

If FG is done properly from a rigidity standpoint it may be lighter than ABS but I would imagine that on a kig mask it would not be significant . FG done poorly using too much resin will weigh much much more than it needs to. And generally people that are not experienced with working with FG will end up with more resin than needed. Looking at kig masks again that is one of the "quality of build" points to look at.

Back to cici...what is this "random person getting to her" you are referring to? Did she react somewhere to something that I missed?

I've already made a few masks with an FRP layer on the inside. I'm actually planning to switch to a resin printer fairly soon. I would make the printed part much thinner than I do with the extrusion printers, and add several FRP layers to the inside, so most of the mass of the shell would be FRP. The result should be a print-based mask that's almost identical to a cast one. Also, resin printers are better at printing at higher resolutions than extrusion printers so less sanding and filling should be required (while it is possible to print at low layer heights with an extrusion printer, that slows down the print considerably because the layer height depends on layer complexity whereas layer time is constant on a projector-based resin printer).

I'm also planning to start making cast generic masks soon (using a printed mask as a pattern, sort of what like Cici and Hikarinaka have done).

>> No.13091030

>>13089755
I use epoxy for the FRP layer on the extrusion-printed masks I've made, and I am going to use it for the cast and resin-print-based masks I am planning to make (although I will use a different kind of epoxy than what I've used so far). I don't want to deal with the nasty fumes that polyester produces (I have nowhere at home that would be suitable, and while I am a member of a hackerspace, I'm not sure they'd want me stinking up the place with polyester fumes). Plus, epoxy is less brittle than polyester is.

I know GKO also uses epoxy. Not sure if any other makers do.

And ABS kig masks are 3D printed. The amount of labor isn't really any less as far as finishing is concerned. They need assembly and a lot of filling, sanding, and smoothing (like I said before I am hoping that resin-print-based masks should take less work to smooth than ABS ones). The reduction of labor and materials cost with 3D printing is more on the design side of things, so printing directly only makes sense for customs; for generics, casting still makes more sense (although using a printed mask as a pattern still has advantages over traditional methods since it allows for things like scaling).

Even if you only apply one layer of fiberglass matt or cloth inside a mask, you still need enough resin to soak through the cloth then bind to the ABS. On top of that, you will need enough of a resin coat over that to create a smooth surface on the inside of the mask, free of any fibers sticking up. Given the size of a Kig mask, that would involve 4-6 ounces of resin.

Good question. Possibly with an undersized lycra Hadata to provide a little compression.

Maybe with heavy breast forms and a bra with wide straps to distribute the weight across the shoulder?

The trick as I understand it, is to make the neck look longer.

I'm painfully new to kigurumi but it seems really interesting. I have no idea what to do or where to start and i have shitloads of questions. Do you have to make your own masks or do shops do custom orders? Do they make suits that have boobs already or do you have to do that yourself? The sites in the first page seem really limited.

I infer from your question, that you do not have mad sculpting skills and could not make your own custom sculpture, from which you would make a mold to make the mask in.

Yes, many Mask Makers will "customize" a stock mask. By that I mean you get to choose eye color and hair color and hair style.

I do not believe that many will create a unique custom mask of a specific character. I have asked some of the makers using 3D printers, and they say "No, I can't take a cartoon drawing and scan it in to create a template, to make a custom mask." The technology is not quite there yet.

However, since these people had to build the template of the mask they make, maybe they have enough graphic art skills, to modify that template to produce a specific character mask in a specific size.

There are a few people out there, who are into Kigurumi, who have made their own custom masks from scratch. Some even work in the field of makeup and SFX. I have no idea whether they would take on a commission, or how much it would cost.

If you want to ask questions post them here. You will probably get several answers. Possibly contradicting each other. But they will be a starting point for further research.

a western comic or cartoon artist isnt able to draw mangas, just because he knows how to draw. while he surely has an advantage over a complete newbie, he has to learn the specific "rules" (proportions, etc) for mangas.
also artist have their own style. most cartoon characters dont have a 3d equivalent.

a more viable option is taking a 3d model from games or other sources. but even those are usually a way to low quality and face copyright and converting problems.

TL;DR creating a model is hard (regardless of 3d modelling or clay sculpting) to do right, especially from 2d. this is what you're paying for

I 3D print my masks and I do offer full customs, i.e. the shape of the base shell is customized to the character, as opposed to masks with a standard shell and only customized hair/eyes/mouth.

Like you said, there's no way to automatically generate a mask from a 2D image though. I normally make full customs by copying a previous model and adjusting the shape as appropriate (I use model sheets and screenshots as references).

Hikarinaka uses PLA and always takes a mold with yacht-industry class FRP.
Both can use previous molds to make a mask that is close to original design

Special coats make epoxy FRP stronger. Industrial grade FRP with several layers of coats can stand a durect hit and lasts for years even in sea water. I'd prefer FRP mask based on printed design. It's also lighter.

correct. different manufacturers use different resins. Historically I used epoxy resin and polyefir resin with fiber - it's common technologu for russian cosplay. As well as boat construction and team park decoration. If use carbon fiber it's plain construction material, with glass fiber it's spacesuit construction material.
This materials need to be covered both outside and inside with PVA, paint, laquerer, etc.

>>13091015
tecnically you won't need sanding at all. I'd recommend to try spraying resin over the surface to see if it smooth it before put into UV. With certain inner structure it may not need layer of fibers inside as well.

The raw cost (if you have all the tools like dremel and sanding tools and aerograph, hot glue gun) is around 150
usd - it's 2kg of silicone (if needed) , 500g of fibers, 1rg of resin, 3-5 brushes, some plastic glasses or small sheets, one or two wigs (I use raw hair threads or one wig depend on mask design and size), printed on photopaper eyes, a can of laquerer, markers and paints (I also use eyelashes), some sanding paper, some foam, some cloth to cover foam, glue or hotglue to install paddings, hair, etc.

I swear most of these used to be on Webshots, before everything disappeared. Nice find.

I was always into this but well, not being a girl was always one handicap I needed to overcome :D
What do you say the best way to lose weight would be for like this? I think of a minimalistic diet but unsure if that would work. Also can one " cheat " with say you wear corset to make your waist thinner?

(pretty much all hobby kigs are guys barring a few fyi)

best way to lose weight is simply to exercise, no two ways about it, just go out running and keep at it, swimming, cycling, whatever floats your boat really and yes even the thinnest people use corsets

Also, if you drink soda, cutting it entirely and drinking water is a fairly easy way to lose a couple pounds.

that will not help if you look fat .
i wear a corset under most of my outfits when i cosplay but i am also a lightweight. Not just for a slim waist but it gives a better posture as well, and i somehow like how it feels =)

People who kig on here with facebooks, how gross do you feel when those 60 year old dudes comment with shit like "You rock! :) Spank me"?

Oh I see thanks for the advice!
Is the corset not suffocating a bit though? I always imagined that in the long run it can be painful

For exercises, you'll probably want to do a bunch of cardio and no strength training (don't want big manly arms) except for squats (replace butt/thigh fat with muscles). I actually have the opposite problem and am too skinny and have absolutely no ass or thighs and it's obnoxiously difficult to get padding thick enough and shaped well.

As for wearing a corset, it helps a little but isn't some miracle that can turn fatty into curvy. Also it's not particularly uncomfortable if it's fitted right. And beware of the cheap Chinese corsets all over eBay. They're pretty much decorative only; they look nice and are OK if you don't crank 'em down tight, but don't try to do any serious squeezing or they'll fall apart. If you want real waist shrinkage, go for the ~$100+ ones with steel bones.

What is "yacht-industry class FRP"? How does it compare to "industrial grade FRP"? What makes something " special coats"?

Is there some sort of certified rating system ?

>> No.13166742

>>13166597
lloyd's (of london) runs a certification program for yacht construction materials. i've very little idea how it relates to things that aren't yachts.

i think it's just a boast about using expensive materials, like calling aluminum widgets "aircraft-grade".

I thought its the same general type of resins used. it is the weave of the cloth, layering and construction methods that differ. Also some Yachts are made of kevlar and carbon fiber so they would be using epoxies rather than polyester or vinylester resins.

So I agree, you are right, it sounds like big words to make something seem like more than it is.
