There's no real reason to learn it. It's like learning Klingon. Fun for the intellectual challenge as well as hobby aspect of it, sure, but what is the practical reason.

The Japanese learn English primarily as it opens them up to the whole of the world... i.e. they have more/better opportunities to make a living. Japanese opens you up to... Japan.

I don't see either of these as making fun of people with autism. Well with Davido I'm fairly certain they didn't even consider that he might have autism.

If people there do know what it is then they see it as either bad parenting or lack of character.

If they knew what autism was and had considered it then maybe, just maybe they'd have found another person to make fun of. They found what they saw simply as a "useless eater" which they aren't fond of. They just lumped him in with hikiki-otaku.

They found it even more insulting that he was in their country not working or studying.

Japan has very little awareness of mental health compared to the west, which is why so many of the women are running around cray-cray and so many men kill themselves.

And the second one... how was she making fun of him? It was pretty obvious to me that she could tell he was 'different' and she was trying to be kind about it. I'm sure that many of her Japanese fans are autist as well and they would have to be nice to autists or they'd lose a major chunk of their fanbase/income.

Sorry for the late reply, two hours a day minimum is good, but if you can I would aim for 4 hours minimum. I may make it sound a bit easy because I had just graduated high school, wasn't going to college, only working part time and living with my parents. So I had lots of free time. My study routine was I first did RTK to learn my kanji. Yes you do not learn the readings from this book, but it will make sense later, trust me. You should really buy this book and it will get you very far. During that period I would always listen to japanese radio or podcasts, stuff made for native speakers. Have fun, half of my studying was just watching japanese tv, japanese gaming streams etc...
For reading, I read my favorite blogs of japanese idols and other random easy to read stuff on the internet. Any words I came across I would add into anki. Some good resources are definately RTK(remembering the kanji), a blog called AJATT and then a good online dictionary.

When I realized I was learning Japanese just for the sake of learning it.

It is one of my life-goals, but every time I pick up Anki or something similar to get my kanji going, I end up giving up one or two months later, dropping a good 400 kanji and about 1000 vocabulary for nothing in return.

I just don't know how to incorporate Japanese in my life; the stuff I'm interested in requires at least a couple of the N levels, and everything else has English versions or translations, or has kind of an inconsequential story/language role.

I want to put Japanese into my life, but it just feels inconvenient to replace my daily English for it. It sucks because I want to have both languages on the back of my hand.

Question: is it true it's easier to learn kanji starting by radicals?

Once I learn radicals, it should be much easier to write new kanji, as I already know the parts, correct?

What are your thoughts on this?

I'm just starting. Barely learned Katakana/Hiragana and want to find the best approach to learning kanji.

Some recommend Heisig method, but other's say it sucks.

I'd like some basic plan that I can follow, so I don't have to jump all around.

>> No.13069112

>>13069094
I'm still in the early stages (about 300 kanji so far) but to me it seems good to just pick up the radicals that are in each kanji as you go since most of the radicals are themselves characters. Whenever I learn a new kanji, if it has a pattern that I don't really recognize, I'll check to see if it's a radical (and it usually is) and then try to remember the raidcal as well as the kanji. Then, when I learn other kanji with that same radical in it, I can try to remember that kanji as having a certain radical in it. For instance, 冬 is winter. After having learned that, learning 終り became slightly easier because while memorizing I would think 'Oh yea, it's the one with 'winter' on the right half and 'silk' on the left half' etc. etc.

>> No.13069127

>>13069112
Ok, learning to recognize Kanji is not the toughest task, but how the hell do you remember both pronunciations??? It's not like you can associate anything with them and they are all so similar.

>> No.13069151

>>13069127
Both pronunciations? You mean the onyomi and kunyomi? Basically I just make sure that I have at least one vocab word I'm learning for each reading. So for instance with 場所 (basho, common word for 'place' you may have already picked up just from listening even if you don't know the kanji) I decided to also learn 会場 (kaijou, meeting place, assembly hall, venue, etc.) since it has the じょう reading of 場 in it, as well as 会 which is a kanji I laready knew. Now I have a word that has the onyomi for 場 as well as the kunyomi for 場 and I don't have to worry about memorizing the sound by itself without having a word attached in my head to that sound. When I see other words with that kanji in it, I can take a guess at which reading to use, and then look it up to see if I got it right. By the way, it seems that the majority will actually have more than two pronunciations, but they'll often be close, or the ones that have lots and lots of different pronunciations will have a few that are preferred the most often.

>> No.13069186

>>13069151
My reasoning for doing this by the way is sheer number of kanji that have the exact same readings. 見 can be read as けん and so can 犬. 会 can be read as かい and so can 回 and 開 and 界 and I'm sure many others. So trying to just memorize every pronunciation without a word to along with it seems really unreasonable. The only way I could figure to get them into my head properly is to actually learn a word for the kanji as well that uses each reading. That way, I've got a way to remember the reading, the kanji itself, and now I know a new word as well.

Already made some posts, but
Also just learning for the sake of learning/to be able to read VNs and light novels and actual 'normal' novels. Also want to one day be able to read stuff like Buddhists texts in Japanese (used to be very interested in Ancient Greek Philosophy...then I read some English translations of Gotama and realized that half of the shit Western Philosophy focuses on is useless pedantic bullshit and hated myself for wasting all that time) but I understand that will probably be very difficult since many of the readings/terms will probably be very rare and specific to Buddhism rather than general vocabulary.

Currently using SRS type stuff, mostly Anki and Houhou to learn kanji and vocabulary. Reading through Tae Kim's grammar guide that constantly gets recommended on here it seems and making a notebook of the main points in his guide to study from daily. Also watching subbed Japanese dramas and other television shows and watching to try to catch kanji that I already know/words that I might be able to pick up on by hearing repeatedly (which I then add to my kanji/vocab lists on Anki/Houhou). Attempted to start reading some raw manga and light novel content as well but realized very quickly that it's still far far far too early for that (only got about 300 kanji down).

But you are both wrong. English is written phonetically. The rules are bullshit, but the way it's written is based on the way it's spoken. There are examples of Latin and Greek roots causing this as well. It's definitely not like the letters themselves represent the meaning but the etymology of the word has influenced the spelling and made it not completely phonetic... but I guess you're right I'm trying a little too hard at this point. Overall, it should be classified as phonetic, shouldn't have gone as far as saying it isn't at all.

I have been diagnosed with Asperger's myself (by a real psychologist in actual therapy, not some shitty self-diagnosis).

The right question to ask is not 'are these people disadvantaged in society due to their condition?', but rather 'are these people capable of functioning in society despite their condition?'. For most people with Asperger's, the answer to the latter question is YES.

I myself strongly feel that a lot of Asperger's 'treatment' is counterproductive. You tell them they're special and shield them from the environment. But if you do that, they'll never learn to fit in. I didn't get my official diagnosis until I was 18. As a kid, I hopelessly failed to fit in, was heavily bullied, etc. But all that shit I went through taught me how to behave in a manner to not attract that kind of shit, and I grew up to be a mostly functional person. I finished high school with little issue and college with no issues at all.

Then we get into 'real society', where I am clearly disadvantaged compared to 'normal' people. I've been unemployed for 9 months now; applying for jobs is really difficult for me and I've been procrastinating for ages now as I still had plenty of money left. This money is now running out (only ~3 months of money left). Should you be giving me autismbux? Hell no; my declining funds are putting pressure on me to finally get a job, and I know myself well enough to know I'll have a job before my money runs out; I can do this kind of stuff if I absolutely have to. If I were getting autismbux instead, I'd never get a job since my funds wouldn't be running out and I don't bend nearly as easily to social pressure as 'normal' people.

Sidenote: Some people are genuinely incapable of working, and as >>13066410 points out it doesn't really cost much money to sustain these people. I don't know how many people are exploiting the system, but you shouldn't punish an entire group for the crimes of a few exploiters. Some people really need the money.

This.

I was called autistic when I was a kid, but I grew up in a normal environment (non-SPED) and I learned how to grow up with people surrounding me, thinking I was normal. Then I just turned to one. Same thing happened to my cousin who also has the same disorder (runs in our family lol)

And now that I got checked again by my psychologist, apparently I kind of grew out of it and now is classified as a high-functioning autist. The problems are still there, but are managed a lot better.

Most people give up because they get burned down and can't stand doing reps anymore. It's better to take years to learn and get somewhere than spending a couple of months doing 300 reps a day and giving up midway through. It's not as if there's a deadline you have to meet, and if you start studying grammar at some point, you can try your hand at reading actual Japanese way before you memorize that many kanji.

Actually, two common misconceptions are that you can't do anything with Japanese before memorizing 2000+ kanji and that once you learn a bunch of kanji everything else is easy. In fact, kanji is probably one of the easiest parts of learning the language. Of course, it takes a lot of time and patience, but it's not really something difficult if you don't try to shove all of them into your head at once. Besides, with basic grammar knowledge and a little practice you can make it through easy stuff with a dictionary and ~500 kanji on your back and it won't be much more difficult than it would have been if you knew 2000 kanji.

An excellent comeback, but unfortunately futile as other indications give you away as complete /jp/ newbie:
- Your lack of understanding on Japanese learning; not just being clueless about your next step, but even moreso treating the ability to read kana as something important. (It's so simple, everyone here can do it. The stuff of nightmares comes after learning the kana.)
- The use of reaction images is uncommon and generally discouraged on /jp/. (There are many situations where they're overlooked, but yours isn't one.)
- Your use of a full screenshot instead of a proper rip or cut indicates that despite your willingness to use reaction images you don't have many. (The very descriptive, properly formatted filename also subtly hints at this.)
- Your overly enthusiastic/'hip' way of talking reeks of /a/, perhaps /vg/.
- You're posting an image from Danganronpa (2), which for some reason (probably it being handheld only or it being too popular) is not popular on /jp/, while being very popular on /a/ and /vg/.

Though it's not as bad as it used to be in the past, please be aware that /jp/ has a somewhat different board culture and tends to be hostile towards newbies. Please do your best to fit in, especially by lurking so you learn how not to stick out like a sore thumb.

As for your question, it's really basic stuff, so mostly just lurk around threads like these and you'll discover enough. Next steps would be 'everything', that is, mainly learning kanji, grammar and vocabulary. Look up the school kanji lists on Wikipedia, and for grammar I give you the words 'Tae Kim'. For the rest, try searching the archive (lurk more if you don't know about it); we've been having threads like these for 7 years now.
