Serious question. Why a girl would want to become an idol?

- The agency take all the money
- Idols can't have boyfriends. The Japanese mainstream was terrified for the Minegishi's scandal
- Near zero chances to make it on the entertainment business after the graduation
- Terrible work conditions
- Being stalked by wotas 24/7. Not including crap like the wota with the chainsaw on an AKB48 handshake
- Every girl over 13 know that idols must suck yakuza cocks

At least the Disney channel "stars" get a lot of money. In fact, their parents often encourage their kids to participate on auditions for making money, despite the terrible effect over their kids's emotional stability. Meanwhile, idols don't get shit besides appearing on some stupid variety show

Wrong, the agency take most of the money, but still leave the idol far more wealthy than the average job (and with fame too boot, which a lot of people desire)
>- Idols can't have boyfriends. The Japanese mainstream was terrified for the Minegishi's scandal
Japanese have trouble dating anyway.
>- Near zero chances to make it on the entertainment business after the graduation
Not zero, and girls often think optimistically. And besides, chances for money, fame and to sing now aren't things to turn down anyway, even if only briefly.

Umm what? No, they get peanuts for their work unless they are in a famous group and they happen to be one of the top members like In AKB48. You are pretty disillusioned if you think otherwise. Go ahead, go to Japan and ask a few girls in idol groups how much they make.
Let's take BiS for example, they had a wonderful profit margin for a smaller group, but the members got shit out of it, Pour Loui even had to work at a bakery part time to be able to susfain herself, and she has her own band on top of that.

Nope, it's aniotas who always been looked down on, don't mix the two together.
I know that it's hard to imagine for you people who visit a bunch of weeb sites where "Japan" equals "anime paradise", but unlike other typical otaku-ish interests (gaming, mecha, idols, semi-professional wrestling), anime is actually one of the few that was never graced with mainstream recognition and always got looked askance.
It's easy to feels this difference in treatment if you visit Japanese websites, but mass-media picks up and respectfully discusses all the other otaku topics I said before on a daily basis, whereas anime is generally ignored and marginalized to only a few "specialized" corners of the interwebs.
To further expand, it's normal to see public figures (often unsuspicious people like politicans and sportsmen) make open statements like "I'm a mononofu", "I love AKB", "Kenta Kobayashi is my hero", but no one seems willing to put their name on the line and give a shout out to anime.

Pop quiz:
What large otaku gathering was presented by newscaster live on TV with the following utterance: "Over 100,000 Tsutomu Miyazakis are in this place"?
....
Give up already?

Sasshi gets money from commercials for popular brands (see how they still preferred re-using KoiSuru for Toyota's commercial than Kokoro no Placard), the comedy movies she does in tandem with Fukuda Yuuichi and the royalties from her book. I think being HKT's theater manager also gets her an extra in her paycheck. The family owned agency that her mother runs on her behalf is probably to not let anyone get any share of these profits.

In Tokyo Akihabara, the Junior Idol specialized store "Oimoya Honpo" closed on the first of this month. In the multi-tenant building, the shop was a very popular store that handled a lot U15 DVDs and photobooks. Supposedly there is a a lot of regular customers, so for what reason did the store have to close?

>土日にはアイドルの撮影イベントを行っており、常連客によれば「イベントでは女の子との距離も近くて楽しかった」と好評だった。閉店した1日、学校の教室を模した店内を多くの客が訪れ、在庫整理で値下げされたDVDを熱心に吟味していた。
Each saturday, there was and idol photoshoot event, where according to regular customers you could enjoy "Meeting the girls up close and in person". On the day of closure, there was a lot of customers arriving to the shop resembling of a school-classroom, going enthusiasticly going through all the DVD with price cuts.

>閉店理由について同店の公式サイトでは「セル商品の販売数低下を抑えられず、営業不振により、閉店を余儀なくされました」と説明。今後はネットショップとして引き続き営業していくという。
According to the shops website, sales have been declining over a long time so they have now eventually been forced to close. From now on the store will continue in the form of the net-shop only.

Although, according to people into Junior Idols, due to getting cold looks simply from entering the shop, it is only natural development that people move onto net shops. However, people are also arguing that this may be a result of the last years CP laws renewal.

The renewal of the CP laws last July the definition was changed to include, "juveniles where fully or partially nude, and body parts deliberatly exposed/highlighted in a sexual way, or in a way to stimulated sexual desires. Thus, Junior Idol DVDs with Swimwear is in the grayzone.

Because of the revision, simply posession is grounds for up to one year penal service or 1 000 000 yen penalty fee. Because of the one year grace period, it is supposedly business as usual for another half year.

The current DVD makers says its hard to know at what level stuff will be treated as CP by the new law. Even if it becomes july, there may not be any discussions about stopping. Although on the distribution side there are companies stepping forward, first we might stop selling the elementary school DVDs, then then junior high DVDs.

単純所持への刑事罰が猶予されるぎりぎりの期限までジュニアアイドルを取り扱えないかと各社が考える裏には、その売り上げの良さがある。

Awww, now you're getting really adorable. Not only all of this has no bearing whatsoever on my other post, but the monkey is also starting to parrot word for word some banalities he read on someone's else "critics" corner, for lack of personal experience. Let me guess where you took it from... Japantimes? Here, have a peanut.

Let me tell you a secret: not only meet and greets are probably one of the most commonplace forms of celebrity PR ever in the world (even in the West where the "great alternative" is charging 200 to 300 bucks per entrance tickets, see: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2162298/Celebrities-charging-fans-meet-It-s-pure-greed.html)), but it's always been there.
In the case of idol groups, for the last 30-something years they have been always held to celebrate the released of a new recording and they've always associated the entrance to these events with the proof of purchase of some fan goods. The practice dates far before "CD sales being in decline", so it's hardly a novel idea invented on the spot to cope with "these harsh times".
Here's Morning Musume circa 1997 for you, same thing:

>> No.13059841

Being an idol isnt so bad.

I thought I could become a model, I realized it was not very fun at all, I heard. its most often a scheme.
They hire you, and make you get an expensive apartment, once you are hired they dont give you jobs on purpose, after several months pass you are in heavy debt and thats when the trouble starts, many foreign models end up in prostitution this way.
Luckily I did not become a model, but an "idol" instead, for the sake of safety I will not mention the companies ive worked for or the name ive used, i'm sorry.

I'm truly thankful for the experience, as it helped me earn money when i otherwise couldnt have, this helped me enjoy life in japan.
For the people here saying it is an abusive trade, this is false. There are companies which are shady (80% of business in japan is connected to yakuza in some way), obviously the theme of the entertainment is such, but the treatment of those involved is not shady, even casting. There ARE shady people in the business but due to the market being the way it is, people can always find a job in a different place that treats them better, this causes a lot of production companies to be very careful.
There is little room for lechery, parents are often there, during casting and shooting. MANY people are involved, at least two dozen or so sometimes men and women, there is no shady man alone in a room with a girl. It is professional. Besides schoolgirl prostitution is rampant, why would they need to fuck business associate?

The business is not misogynist either, many women work in the business. My casting agent was a woman. Many make-up artists are women, as well as the camera operators themselves are women. It is not a man's business built in tricking the innocent girl.
In my time working ive never once seen a yakuza, in modern times they work in loans and helping businesses get started, so they are only on money side of things, never seen in person mostly.

will answer more questions. if there is any

The question should be why wouldn't anyone want to be an idol.
Everyone wants to be special/superior and what's more special than a star/celebrity or whatever you call a person on stage/tv.

Sure there might be a lot of short comings to the job once you are actually one but people tend to behave irrationally in times of want or am foolishly optimistic enough to believe that they will be different.

Also what else are you going to do with your life anyway. Life sucks wall to wall so why not try something ridiculous?

>Coreans

Different market.
Koreans hire composers from all over the world to analyze the trend and deliver sick beats, and these composers share their knowledge with the koreans themselves. Their market is the world.
Compare this to Japan where everything is muh home country pride, and their main demographic is the Japanese people.

Behind those corean glamour and fame tho, the agency strip their idols off their human rights.
They set an image of who you are, how you should act, isolate you into your dorms, set a harsh diet, program your daily activities, etc.
Not to mention the necessary plastic surgery to suit the new identity the agency gave you.

It's much worse than Japan.

>Their market is the world.

Ha, you wish. For all appearance of "international appeal", 70% of KPop profits come from Japan, how fucking ironic.

http://www.j-cast.com/2014/04/21202784.html?p=all

Not surprising, the reason they chose to invade Japan with their shit for a brief period in 2010-11 was because it was a neighboring country, somewhat culturally compatible, with a big enough music scene to accomodate everyone to a successful degree and close enough that they could make any group "debut" there at the cost of a simple ferry ride. Not to mention lots of zainichi friends pulling the strings for them at Fuji TV.
Yet Japan, the biggest source of their money flow, rejected it nonetheless.
What other significant support does KPop get worldwide? I see only some mutual backscratching from isolated Koreatown, mostly driven by a false sense of racial belonging.

>Link to moonrunes I can't even comprehend, but is most likely nip propaganda.

Assuming that article is correct:
While profits is important, the ultimate goal of the industry is to invade the world with their "culture".
The music generates an interest for their home country, and serves as a gateway for further opportunities in the future.

Now here's why I can say it's nip propaganda:
I don't know how Korean music fares in the west (which I assume where you live in, since you don't seem to know how crazy Kpop is on the other side of the world), but in Asia, Kpop is a big business that have become mainstream here, a different dimension altogether compared to Jpop.
Kpop blares on radio here and there, and on basically any hangout place available. Even people past 50 knows a thing or two about Kpop.
The only Jpop you would get on radio would be a Japanese version of Kpop, or Kokoro no Tomo. Any other Jpop would be played in Japanese exclusive stores or Japanese themed cafes.

Why would they rely on Japan's market when they are already frying a bigger fish?
South East Asia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, China.
They have established their presence all over these countries and become a part of their culture of sorts.

If there's a nip cultural thing that can compete with Kpop in spreading Japanese culture all over the world, it would be the anime/manga culture.

What is "here" exactly? Just some third world SEAsian country? What you are essentially describing is that countries that don't have enough domestic media production to fill their channels have to resort to importing media from abroad, and in most of the cases the choice of what to import is just based on who could offer the biggest deal at the cheapest price, so as to keep costs in check.
I'm from Europe, but I've seen this phase with my eyes too. Back in the '70s and '80s there was a boom of local TV stations and a problem arose: not all the time slots could be filled with self-produced programs, in fact entire hours of programming were left empy. So what happened is that everyone started importing what was more affordable and more mass-produced: in the case of dramas, it was South American soap operas; in the case of cartoons, it was anime such as Doraemon and super robot series.
Whether they became popular or not by forcible exposure is another story, but just like your radios blaring KPop 24/7, this wasn't a choice dictated by popular demand at all.

>> No.13064386

>>13064372
Besides, this also explains why neither KPop nor anime managed to make a breakthrough in the American mainstream: radio stations already overflowed with self-produced songs while TV stations had already enough cartoons to keep their airwaves busy.

Gravure, modelings or being in commercial.
Its rare for foreigner to be in gravure, most model for clothing stores because westerners are attractive, japanese want to be westerners.

I did need help understanding early on I had a lot of trouble understanding but it got easier as i got older.
Wage was very good, I dont remember exactly how much I made when I was younger because my mother handled, it was enough for me to never worry about money, buy whatever id like, and afford school. Things in japan are very expensive, so that should give you some idea.

>>13063980
There are many older idols.
Being an idol is ( i forget how to say) intermediate job. Most idols go on to be something else after they get older, Juniors may stop once they get past 15 and live normal lives, some do it to pay for college and once they have a job, they quit. Although, money is much too good and they often come back to it.

Older idols exist, theres lots of photobooks etc of older women. Like i said, foreigners are always in high demand. But I dont think gaijin milf is a much desired genre though, i am not sure. Most older women go into pornography.

Define Third World, do you even know ASEAN bruh? Combined together our economy could topple China.
Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Vietnam. These are 1st world and giant developing market right here.
Taiwan and Hongkong has their own Canto-pop going awry right before Kpop entered the market and they kind of lost their identity afterwards.

It's not about producing enough domestic content anyways.
If anything, radio stations in Malaysia and Indonesia are dominated with songs of their own language, and Singaporean prefers Mando-pop and western pop anyways.

Kpop penetrated Asia with brute force, glamour and all, and become a cultural phenomenon.
It's like how the anime/manga culture becomes a lifestyle of sorts here instead of how the western views it as a pastime that is frowned upon.

Get yourself a vacation here and see how things operate. The SEA region is like a melting pot of culture from all over Asia.

>anime is actually one of the few that was never graced with mainstream recognition

People really believe this? In japan anime airs on TV, man, TV. It's mainstream media. You don't need to be part of any niche cultural group to watch it.

Here in Latin America there was a time when anime was on TV and literally everyone still remembers Ranma 1/2 and the perverted transgender stuff they did back then, the same stuff that make"otaku" today think theyre special snowflakes. TV stations made enough money out of publicity even when not owning the product.

Now picture japan. There's literally no law or cultural barrier that can stop a multimillionaire market. Whether people like it or not, they're flooded with idol products.

Also, as >>13064372 said
>Back in the '70s and '80s there was a boom of local TV stations and a problem arose: not all the time slots could be filled with self-produced programs (...) So what happened is that everyone started importing what was more affordable and more mass-produced

Finally someone gets it. The only reason here in Latin America the same TV stations that brought anime started to wage a moralistic war against it was that they would earn more profits with their own products (which were shittier) so they had to take down the competition.

It'd really benefit everyone taking the exotic oriental culture stance to think a little bit of their own culture and how the mass media doesn't respect any cultural-moral belief in order to force people into buying stuff.
