Anybody have much experience with imported Japanese beers? Going to a restaurant for my birthday and they serve:

Kirin
Sapporo
Asahi (black or super dry)
Hitachino (Kiuchi?)

thx bbes

>>13020193
They're all fine. None are amazing. Beer isn't Japan's wheelhouse.

>> No.13020214

U.S. Asahi is brewed in Canada. It is "super dry", meaning it has no flavor.
Kirin is an Anheuser Busch (inbev) product these days and is most likely brewed at your local Budweiser factory.
Sapporo is all right but again, brewed in Canada and Wisconsin.
If you wanna be a weeb, go with Hitachino.

Is Japan made any better? I tried it here and it wasn't amazing but still better than big domestic brands.

Thanks. I'll probably be picking up a 10oz bottle of sake, is brand particularly important for that? The ones they offer are

SHO CHIKU BAI Ginjo
Hakutsuru Sayuri Nigori Sake
Sho Chiku Bai Organic Nama

hopefully i got those names right

Forget the big brands.

Japan has fucking AMAZING micro breweries.

>>13020240

since you don't have any preference yet, how can we advise on a brand for you?

just grab one and see if you like it. if not, move on to the next.

also, play with warm and cold sake.
with sushi, i find warm sake is really damn good.

otherwise, cold is nice.

You could say what brands are bullshit in every sense.

GO WITH HITACHINO
Best Japanese beer, unfiltered and ZUN approved

>> No.13021634

>>13020193
Haven't tried Hitachino. I like Asahi out of the big three but it's really typical big-brand flavorless beer; easy drinking though if you don't drink often, and doesn't taste like piss like some American shit. I've heard good things about Asahi Black, but I don't know cause I haven't tried it.

Really would like to try some Japanese craft beers though. Maybe I'll look for some next time I'm at a Japanese supermarket. If anyone has recs let me know, though selection is really limited.

Damn, I hate warm sake. And I worked at a sushi restaurant for a bit and we only ever warmed up cheap sake. Shit came out of a cardboard box. Top shelf stuff was always served cold or room temp. This was also secretly a corean place, so I don't know if that's how it is at other places.

That cold sake is the good stuff.

GO Orion or leave the restaurant sober.

You won't have good times otherwise.

>> No.13022467

Last time I had sake I had it warm and it was really nice for the -40f temp winters we get here. All the bottles they are serving at this restaurant are sold chilled though.

Kirin, Sapporo and Asahi Super Dry are lagers, they're refreshing enough but not too exciting. Kirin is my favourite of the bunch.

Asahi Black is dark and malty.

Hitachino Nest (made by Kiuchi) have a range of craft beers, they are in a different league to the rest of the beers you mentioned but if you don't like craft beer then don't bother. Some of their flavours are subtle and can't be fully appreciated by some people's stupid gaijin mouths.

Shitty sake is served warm to hide how bad it is. Masks the flavor. Cold/chilled brings out the flavors. If you want a good sake, my favorite is Dassai 50, mainly because I haven't found an excuse to splurge on the 23. Kurosawa Junmai Kimoto is another solid one for a good price(~$10), but since its Kimoto isn't for everyone.

That's one of the bottles we served at the restaurant. I'll check out the other brands too. Not much of a sake fan, but I drink some with my mom sometimes. Might grab a nice bottle next chance.

go hitachino, it's the one with the better taste other than rice lagers the ones are. It is pricey though. If the restaurant has multiple selection, there should be a sake barrel aged ale from Hitachino, but that'll prob cost even more.

Runner up is Asahi black.

You should. You'll grow a bit more appreciation with all kinds of beer all over by contemplating it's at least nothing like American beer.
