Was looking for a fun and unique Soku main and she simply clicked with me. Once I got used to her playstyle, I went through her dialogues and got hooked on how likable she it - her fun to be around with personality and her being a human who supports other humans in particular (that was back when I was just getting the hang of canon and 9 out of 10 characters had a potential another side to them that I despised - especially the youkai). And then I noticed how incredibly underappreciated she was, which was the final push - now she's my favorite Touhou for 3 years and counting.

However, Mokou is not that much miserable in the "present" - I think she's being described as finding amusement and some peace in her current everyday squabbling with the NEET. Still, her personality is heavily influenced by the past. Hopefully, we'll see some more of her in Urban Legend in Limbo.

I belive that ZUN didn't really know what to do with Nitori, after some thinking he decide to get the things clear with the symposium post mysticism, and not only her, he destroy some fan images of some character, but at the same time make canon some of them, my favorite was Kogasa.
